What allows you to sit through an extensively long song?

I am a fan of music, be it long or short, cheesy or profound. But there is a sort of a paradox when it comes to individual songs with a length of 10 minutes or more. I seem to encounter this length with bands like Moonsorrow or While Heaven Wept but it also extends to more droning styles that I am not familiar with like Warning. I am just curious to know what allows you, the listeners, to be able to sit through songs of this length, even if they are really 3 or 4 songs melded into one in a tenuous attempt to make a song sound more (and I hate to use this word) "epic".

Explain.

Two situattions that make long songs pleasants (since they are good songs):
Walking (I play the whole "a change of seasons by Dream Theater" on my way to university...
Or before going to sleep, I can listen to very long songs, it makes me feel calm, because there are no song-changing... I cannot explain that, is a little weird

It needs to have an engaging atmosphere, that just envelopes you into it's sound whether it be a prog rock or prog metal song with multiple sections, such as "Supper's Ready" by prog rock Genesis (22:54) and "Black Rose Immortal" by prog death metal band Opeth (20:15), or a song that does not have a lot of different sections, but is nonetheless extremely hypnotizing, a good example would be every song from death/doom metal band Evoken with their album "Antithesis of Light".

If a song builds up like November Rain, Child in Time, and Stairway to Heaven and turns into heavenly guitar bliss, I can appreciate it. However,if a song is long and has no triumphant guitar solo that makes it worth sitting through boredom, then no fucking dice.

Like many have said: an attention span and an appreciation for atmosphere. That's basically it.

Even an overtly repetitive song can have an engaging enough atmosphere to grab me for 10+ minutes. I've never been the type who looks for catchy hooks and guitar solos, though.

Must be a really catchy and well produced song like Stairway to Heaven or Twilight Of The Gods... Something that alternates and give you the need to know "what will happen before this riff". I listen to Stairway to Heaven like night yes-night no before I sleep.

I am searching for some courage to fully listen to Guns 'N' Roses "November Rain".

Yeah, an atmosphere is nice.
A pet peeve of mine though is when the longest and most epic song isn't the last one on the album.

Jerusalem is actually a trimmed down version of Dopesmoker. That's right - 53 mins is the short version. Dopesmoker is over an hour.

* Adulruna Redivivia (Therion) about 12 minutes and 29 seconds
* Kings of Edom (Therion) is a long song too but only about 8 minutes and 51 seconds

I love both songs and they're always included in my top/favorites list.

Well I enjoy long songs when I walk, but also when I feel pretty low too, it helps me to relax and feel more positive after. I enjoy listening to droneyness, as long as it sounds good (:

But I can say I love some "epic" songs like The Divine Wings Of Tragedy by SyX, Blackwater Park by Opeth or Dogs by Pink Floyd.

It all depends on the musicianship and the ability on the part of the artists to envelope you into a unique environment with their music. Take for example "The Great Escape" by progressive metal band Seventh Wonder, it's a 30 minute epic that goes through many different sections and chapters throughout, almost like reading an adventurous and exciting book that keeps you gripped the entire time. There maybe triumphant moments, there maybe quiet moments, there maybe harsh moments, there maybe happy moments, etc. Hell it could even be an extremely repetitive song with not much dynamism and change present (a song like Reflection by Tool for example), it solely depends on the musicianship and the ideas the band have in mind to keep you engaged throughout a long song. No matter explorative or repetitive, if the musicianship and the musical ideas present are able to engage and captivate the listener, then the artist has succeeded in creating a unique and powerful song that just happens to be long.

I tend to listen to albums all the way through in a sitting, so long tracks are no problem for me as I'm already listening to the whole disc anyway. I really like to sit and focus on the music without interruption. As long as a lengthy track is interesting and doesn't drone on, I enjoy it. Take Rush's "2112" track for example, it never really gets boring because there are multiple movements, almost like a mini rock opera, that keep the song interesting while carrying along an overall theme.

For me it's all about song construction. A long song should mean slowly well developed themes. I'm not a huge fan of the 'songs mashed together thing', if the song sounds like this then I think they're doing it wrong. Though of course long sections are necessary, everything should work together on the whole, and when you're done you should feel like you listened to one great song. The very best ones sound like they weren't written to be long, more that the band wrote the song the way they wanted and it happened to turn out it was 10 or 15 minutes. Opeth is so good at this. When the songs are over I think to myself 'already? damn!'
