Songs that you feel define genres.

Here's the scenario:
You have a friend who wants to hear a song that you feel is representative of a certain type of metal. They've heard lots about the subgenre, but they want you to recommend just one song that, in your opinion, incorporates most of the essential elements of the aforementioned subgenre that they can listen to and make a reasonably informed decision about whether or not that particular style does it for them (i.e. if they like the song, you think there's a fair chance they'll find quite a few bands they like within that subgenre, and if they don't like the song, you feel they probably won't like the subgenre on the whole).

Here are my choices:
Heavy Metal - 22 Acacia Avenue (Iron Maiden).
Doom Metal - Solitude (Candlemass).
Speed Metal - Majesty (Blind Guardian).
Thrash Metal - Angel of Death (Slayer).
Death Metal - Leprosy (Death).
Black Metal - In the Mist by the Hills (Satyricon).
Folk Metal - Journey Man (Korpiklaani).
Viking Metal - Sweoland Conqueror (Thyrfing).
Power Metal - Eagle Fly Free (Helloween).

(N.B. This list only incorporates genres that I like. I wouldn't feel comfortable recommending a song from a genre I'm not a fan of myself, e.g. Progressive Metal. Furthermore, the bands and songs listed are not necessarily my favourites from each genre; I just feel they give a good feel for the genre as a whole.)

Thoughts?

As for black metal, Under a Funeral Moon of course.

Well, Immortal's "One by One" outdo "Under A Funeral Moon" completely.

one by one is not nearly as representative of BM as is UAFM.

but like so many (Guib) the point of representative seems to have gone horribly over your head.

I dont feel to define my recommendations for every genre with a song...Bleh....! I felt that Immortal should be shared with UAFM...so I commented it there..!! (:

It seems quite a few here have problems grasping the intention of this thread and especially the meaning of the word representative

attempting to define a genre with a single song is what the OP asked. it is not recommendations. it is representations.

___

in order to be representative of a genre, i would think it important to be the type of song that helped define the genre, so likely something released earlier on in a genres formative years - the one that set the standard then and influenced others coming later.

Black - Darkthrone - Transylvanian Hunger
Death - Obituary - Find The Arise
Doom - (joins the Candlemass - Solitude train)
Heavy - Judas Priest - Another Thing Coming
Sludge - Buzzov*en - Dirtkickers
Stoner - Sleep - Dragonaut
Thrash - Exodus - A Lesson In Violence

And thinking Baroness is representative for sludge is like thinking Obama's skin colour is representative for the skin colour of all non-whites in the world.

I'm not surprised people don't get it.

I'd also go for Solitude and It'd be a toss up between Transylvanian Hunger or Freezing Moon for black metal.

Death: Suffocation - Infecting the Crypts
Thrash: Sabbat - The Clerical Conspiracy
Sludge: Acid Bath - Cheap Vodka
Stoner: Kyuss - Gardenia
Viking (if there is such a thing): Bathory - Valhalla
Avant Garde: Sigh - Bring Back the Dead
Metalcore: Integrity - Taste My Sin (arguably the first metalcore band anyway)
Melodic Metalcore: Killswitch Engage - Numbered Days

Dodgy but the best you'll get out of me:

Progressive: Opeth - The Leper Affinity or Queensryche - Operation: Mindcrime (depending on how you want to define progressive)
US Power/Speed: Agent Steel - Human Bullet
Heavy: King Diamond - A Mansion in Darkness

Here's my best suggestions...

Heavy: Saxon - Dallas 1 pm
Thrash: Slayer - Raining Blood
Death: Death - Flattening of Emotions
Power: Rhapsody of Fire - Emerald Sword
Technical Death: Obscura - Septuagint
NWOBHM: Iron Maiden - The Trooper
Progressive: Rush - 2112
Doom: Black Sabbath - Black Sabbath
Metalcore: As I Lay Dying - Nothing Left
Hard Rock: Scorpions - Dynamite

Sludge: Acid Bath - Cheap Vodka
Stoner: Kyuss - Gardenia

Cheap Vodka would be my 1b for sludge, had written it in before going back for Buzzov*en. i wanted something nasty that had lots of slower parts, as the tempo is part of what initially defined sludge.

Kyuss was my 1b for stoner as well, although it would have been between Green Machine (my fave of theirs), 50 Million Year Trip, or Gardenia.

Actually I was a little hesitant about Cheap Vodka because of its fast pace but it's also my favoured song off that album so I just went with it.

It seems 99% of the people (also people that are immensely deep into doom ) agree Solitude by Candlemass is the most representative doom song. We have a clear winner here

You don't like Too Extreme?

Love it. But as a representative of death metal, I feel it's just a bit... too extreme (I bet you didn't see that line coming, booyah).

I think so far everyone agrees that the representative of prog would be a song from Images & Words (never mind which one).
As for power (I'm too lazy to think of other genres now, just picking one thing from the top of my head), I'd go for The Fourth Legacy by Kamelot, as a representative of what the genre should sound like. Damn, if only all power metal sounded THAT good...

Ah, very understandable. I think I've said elsewhere, I much prefer Nostradamus as a song, despite it being an obvious rehash of Painkiller, to some degree at least... and thinking about it now, not being quite so intense, it may a prime example of definitive heavy metal (alongside/aside from material from the '80s/late '70s). Plus with the intro including singing of another language, that could prove a further point of conversation... go further in discriminating what should or shouldn't be recommended/sought after.

The song "Nostradamus" is a great one, but I still feel "Painkiller" is a more defining song of the genre. hehe

Written by Syk on 10.09.2011 at 21:12
Hmm... there's always the danger... if you recommend the very best of what a genre has to offer up first, the listener might just get more & more disappointed as they explore more from it

Suddenly into my mind, for doom, are bashing: Anathema - Restless Oblivion, Shroud of Frost and/or Dying Wish from The Silent Enigma. Think I've already mentioned that too, in a beginner's forum thread on the subject... I might just be naming my favourites now

True, although if you recommend lesser examples of what a genre has to offer first, the listener might feel no desire to further explore the genre in the first place. lol

If I was going to name an Anathema song for the doom category, I'd have to go with "Lovelorn Rhapsody". I remember being totally blown away when I first heard that song, and to me it is one of the all time classic songs of the genre.

(Still speaking of favourites, and of Halford...
Stoner? Queens of the Stone Age - Feel Good Hit of the Summer or probably any Kyuss...
Metalcore, somewhat favourite, no Halford: As I Lay Dying - Forever)

Halford, what about him? Stoner? I'll have to think about that one... lol I know some people would class some Cathedral as stoner (as opposed to doom) but Ive never seen them as anything but doom. Same sorta thing with Trouble... I'll come back to that one.

For groove, I guess it all depends whether you'd class "Burn My Eyes", as groove or not... If so, then my pick would definitely be "Davidian" by Machine Head. If not, then definitely "Psycho Holiday" by Pantera! xD
