A little disappointed by the lack of Brent. He's got the best voice in the band, IMO and he's really under utilized.
and I'm sorta getting weary of Brann. best case scenario he belongs to back vox, doesn't have it in him to be lead. he single handedly ruined OMRTS album for me. haven't listened to that one for a long while

This.
Tbh I can take or leave Brent but when you've got one of the best vocalists in rock/metal in Troy Sanders, demoting him to a bit part is a travesty.
Brann's sickly sweet voice got too much for me too and I'm not nearly the fan I was circa Leviathan through to Crack the Skye.

Either I missed something, or this does not feature Scott Kelly! Unforgivable if so...
Utterly uninteresting album then, disappointed

Coming back from stating this is one of the worst and most uninspired album they have made, to actually pretty much digging Disc 1. I believe the album definitely is a grower. Maybe this should be viewed as two separate releases instead of one long one? Not sure if the physical copies contains two separate discs or not. And if that's the case, I am happy that there is one disc that I like, and can look at the other as a bonus.
Regarding Brent, I really love his voice and found his contribution on Once More Round The Sun great.
Edit: Seeing it was Brann's vocals that people were talking about. Oh well, I like his too

I think when ppl say that they mean too long as in there is too much filler. Like that interlude here, that soft passage there, that part that repeats too much... If they trimmed those the album would be a tad shorter but would be far more enjoyable
You cannot suppress my sarcasm with your reasonableness. Reasonableness is against the rules of metal.

I would prefer more Brents and less Troys vocals on this album at least.

Never really saw the appeal of this band but they seem to be well respected by many. Their latest sounds like an endless bridge to me, can someone please point out a few good songs by them?

I've not listened to this one yet, but I enjoyed the album Leviathan, in particular the song "Heart's Alive".

They're scraping the barrel with some of those selections as well.
Just start with the Leviathan and Crack the Skye albums... in that order.

To be honest, remove Steambreather and Clandestiny and add Black Tongue and Diamond In The Witch House and that list hits the vast majority of my top Mastodon tracks, but yeah, as an intro to try and get into them it's a bit extensive. I'd probably say March Of The Fire Ants, Hearts Alive, Crystal Skull, Crack The Skye, Tread Lightly and Jaguar God, between them, should give someone unfamiliar with the band a good idea of whether it's worth their time ploughing further into any of their albums

Well, I gave you some hooks for every album, I don't know what else is here to do. It's not mandatory to listen to them all, you know...

Really pleased with this album. Great to hear the boys with a darker tone than a lot of their previous releases. Not really detecting much filler here though. I know it's a lengthy record, but I feel like every track deserves to be here.

Personally offended it's this long. They could cut 5 or 6 songs out easily and end up with a much more tolerable listen.
Some great solos on this one, and of course Dailor's drumming, but christ, so much fat to trim, both with songs that are just not particularly good as well as fat within multiple songs themselves.

As with many Mastodon records it takes time to grow on you. Don't dismiss this one after one or two listens.

Totally agree. Not sure how anyone can make it all the way through this. I was over it before disc one even ended. Why wouldn’t you release two separate albums and make more money as a band? Doesn’t make any sense.

agreed 100%.
There's a pretty darn good album interspersed amongst another full album's worth of filler.
No sense at all

I love the whole melodic part of it. I wish it was more heavy though. It sounded like more of a stoner rock, than a stoner metal album.

The album is exactly what i says it is: Hushed and Grim. It isn't their most energetic or ambitious record, but it serves its purpose and is enjoyable from time to time.

It would be the first Mastodon full length to do so since Remission.
Yes, I'm really surprised and disappointed, but maybe there is a good reason [Scott Kelly] wasn't on this...
And now we know the reason.
