Well, quite simple really. General discussion relating to Swedish band Katatonia.

And seen as I'm jumping on the band wagon of starting new band-related threads before anyone else, I may aswell have my two cents regarding this one.

Their later albums are better. Both "Viva Emptiness" and "The Great Cold Distance" have far surpassed not only the bands own early material, but that of most other bands making music today.

Here is a link to their official website, where you can find out all sorts of juicy information: http://www.katatonia.com/

Cheers.

I enjoy old and new Katatonia. The old one show the old doom metal essence. They are great and gather all the elements in a perfect way.

About new one I listened so many times to understand it and finally I could do it. The lyrics has influenced me too much. And when I started to listen them I was in a special time of my life. The Jonas Renske's voice fit perfectly. So I have listened carefully their last albums and they have made me feel melancholic. I identify in many aspects with them.

I just can say Katatonia is Katatonia.

I'll be honest: I love every song on Viva Emptiness. I know this is an unpopular opinion but I think it's a brilliant album. The album shows a broad range - from the aggressive opener "Ghost of the Sun" to the calm and acoustic "Omerta." Really, I enjoy every song.

I also own Brave Murder Day and Last Fair Deal Gone Down but don't listen to those 2 as often. I have to say though, Passing Bird is a hiliarous song

I absolutely love Brave Murder Day. To me it is one of my favourite albums of all time.
I find it difficult to get into viva, and Last fair deal. Katatonia never seem to lose any creativity nonetheless.
Their latest album the great cold distance is beautifully crafted and performed. Well Done.

These guys are OK. Nothing about them stands out to me, but they certainly are a talented band nonetheless. The vocals just turned me off to the music, but I'm still open to what material I haven't heard. I'm only saying all of this from listening to the newest release. They have a huge following so I'll be sure to check out their older stuff, which is probably way better.

does noone like the tonights music album?

i thought that album set a very dark and erie atmosphere

i thought last fair deal gone down was really good because it wasnt as dark as other albums and it was refreshing and puts some variety in2 the band

i dont like viva emptyness because it makes me paranoid but the music is good

the great cold distance i still havent made my mind up on yet

very good band though, a very atmospheric band but also a band were you should be carefull of the lyrics because if your depressed they will just make things worse

KATATONIA!! Why the heck havent I posted in here yet?!

Katatonia are one of my favourite bands, old or new style, I love it all. I tend to listen to their newer sound more than the older one (i still Looove the old dark doom style though). Dont really have a favourite because i play them all so much, but it would probably one of the releases after the 'Sounds Of Decay' [EP] which is the only release i havent heard from them.

The track selections on the two compilation albums - 'Brave Yester Days' and The Black Sessions' - are excellent!! I would recommend these two for people wanting to geti into this band ... and yes they are compilation albums but really, these are two that im really happy with the track selections.

I Love Katatonia

I'm so sad recently I've heard "The Great Cold Distance" and it's sad, Katatonia is like a pop band, before their music used to have s little bit of their pure essence but now they seem like a pop band I still enjoy the band in every point till Brave Murder Day, then just the music, now nothing...

If I may make a suggestion - The compilations Brave Yester Days & The Black Sessions are both very good value for money and give a good overview of pretty much all their material. I used Brave Yester Days to get into the band, and immediately loved tracks such as "Without God" and "Palace Of Frost", among others.

Since then I've picked up The Great Cold Distance, Viva Emptiness, and most recently, The Black Sessions for a further sampling of their more recent-era material.

Viva Emptiness is a masterful album. The Great Cold Distance isn't the best follow-up, imo - but it's at least reasonable. From their other stuff on "The Black Sessions" - "Teargas" is absoultey brilliant, as are the other featured tracks from "Last Fair Deal Gone Down". In fact, judging by those tracks that i've heard - that album would have a hard time not being as good or better overall than Viva Emptiness. I'll be hunting it down asap

In short. If you think there's some chance you'll like the band based on The Great Cold Distance - definitely try the older stuff. It's much better.

I´ve probably said this but I think that "Teargas" is best song by Katatonia. Few songs have such impact on me and even the lyrics are quite good Also definite highlights for me are "Distrust", "In the White", "Omerta", "Evidence", "For my Demons" and the list goes on and on.
Actually, I even usually don´t like the type of music Katatonia makes this much (I don´t care for Anathema, Paradise Lost or Tiamat) but the atmosphere they manage to great is highly addictive. In fact, to my ears they are one of the most addictive bands there is.
And, overall I prefer new Kataonia

I'm just listening to Dance Of December Souls, and after all this time, this album sound fresh and awsome. Lord Seth's vocals were so cold and full of depression, I wonder, that what happened to him, that he couldn't sing more like this.

As a big fan of doom, and katatonia itself, I must give preference to their Doomy era. I still like their stuff up till Viva Emptiness which has a kick ass intsrumental (Inside the City of Glass), other than that I think that album is empty. As for Great Cold Distance, i think its a bit better than Viva Emptiness.
Its no match to Brave Murder Day and I doubt they will every outmake that album. They used to write such good lyrics, what happened to them after The Discouraged Ones?

The great cold distance it's quite depressive and all that stuff, there is no similarity with pop at least I can't find any, but dance of december souls is the best for me.
I am interested if they play the old songs live, cause I am probably going to see them in Greece.

how possible to say "Katatonia's music is quite familiar with pop music" ?
How?!Who can say these useless words? The ones who never heard Katatonia's great sound.
So many songs we can recommend to meet Katatonia's great depressive sound but just as a tiny example, THEY SHOULD LISTEN "Teargas".
No more words needed!
Try once and get caught!

They're just Katatonia. And I respect that, because they've created their own style, and their own atmosphere.

Has anyone checked out the dvd they released? Its pretty cool, kinda boring at times though. The singer just stands there singing with his eyes closed. The dvd def. shows that they are one well rehearsed band though. Music is extremely tight. A solid dvd in general.

To me, Katatonia has always been summarised in my mind by "Dispossession." It was the first of their songs that I heard, personally being relatively new to the metal scene.

I was impressed - Renkse's haunting vocals mesmerised me and made me hang on every word. Similarly, I was drawn in by their beautiful melodic guitars; Katatonia transports me. As yet I haven't heard an album of theirs that I haven't liked, and their range continues to amaze me.
