Judas Priest stablished the musical (also the image) of what metal is today, Iron Maiden obviously is more popular, and i think they maybe (perfectioned is not the word) maybe they "polished" the style... (the word in spanish is "pulir (pulieron)" so i don't know if it is an accute translation the word "polished")

It's a tough question because without Judas Priest, Iron Maiden would most likely not have the same sound that they have. Both bands were very important figures in the evolution of NWOBHM. Iron Maiden have got more commerical attention and they have influenced a lot of bands not just metal bands. Although I'm going to have to give my vote to Judas Priest on this one, despite that I prefer Iron Maiden. Firstly, Judas Priest have been more diverse in their sound and have been more experimental. Now don't get me wrong, Iron Maiden's music is not all the same either, but Judas Priest have experimented with their sound much more. Also despite that I prefer Bruce Dickinson's vocals, Rob Halford has a greater range in his vocals which has influenced many vocalists also. Furthermore, Iron Maiden influenced a vast amount of power metal bands but also bands from other genres, although Judas Priest inspired countless thrash/speed metal bands along with other bands from various genres. You could almost say that they are equal in the influence aspect, although my vote simply goes to Judas Priest because Iron Maiden would not be where they are with Priest. Their influence is undeniable.

Well, the poll doesn't actually say "give an explanation", but if you want one, the best I can give for picking Priest is these two words: Metallica. Slayer.

@ Man or Ash: if you would have read the rules before posting, you might have noticed that you always have to give an explination rather then just posting the name of a band (what would be the use of a discussion forum if there were only some names on it?) and even now your explination is very limited, not to say kinda vague (again just band names)

18.06.2006 - 16:40 Written by [user id=4] on 18.06.2006 at 11:41 Well there are two of the most importants bands of all time in the metal scene, but which one do u think is more influential? GIVE REASONS AND EXPLAIN. I think Judas Priest has been more influential in the US metal than in the european one, on the other hand I've been noticed about lot of european bands with influence of Iron Maiden, so I can't decide =). Well... maybe this two bands haven't been very influential for death metal or black metal bands but IMO they've been in thrash, power, progressive and heavy even hard rock. Choose one!! ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ That's what the poll says, as u can see... says something like.... "GIVE REASONS AND EXPLAIN" maybe...?? Kinda big mouth here...

Iron Maiden of course! Well from what i've noticed, even people who know nothing about metal have heard about Iron Maiden! They are the legends of the legends! ( of course Judas Priest had a large influence, they had a great one, but not as much as Iron Maiden ofcourse!)

18.06.2006 - 21:54 Written by Stigmatized on 18.06.2006 at 20:41 Well, u know Iron Maiden has been influential in bands from any country, but IMO as I said in the poll Judas Priest had more influence in the US metal than in the European one... I see clear influences of Judas Priest in thrash metal and hair metal which mostly comes from US. On the other hand Iron Maiden I think hadn't that success in the US, nevertheless, they influenced the whole european metal scene... that's what I think...

Iron Maiden were influence by Judas Priest so all bands influenced by them are indirectly influenced by Judas Priest so, even though i personally prefer Iron Maiden, Judas Priest are the more influential because they pretty much invented modern metal

I for sure prefer Iron Maiden and they have influenced my taste and the way I personally write music much more than Judas Priest (I don't generally dig them that much ) but when it comes to deciding which one is the more influential generally for the metal scene it is very hard to decide. Right now the influence of Iron Maiden seems a bit stronger but Judas Priest had their impact earlier so it's gettin a bit forgoten. I think a tie would be fair...

Okay so I'm slightly biased cos I haven't really heard any Priest, but I love Maiden, but by looking through random band interviews and the like, more bands list Maiden as an influence. But I would guess it depends on which sort of metal you're talking about.

Iron Maiden for far. Here in Chile and anywhere around the world knows Iron Maiden and there are a lot of fans. Personaly I like much Iron Maiden that has a more original sound than Judas Priest. The two singer are awesome and ones of the best with Andre Matos (ex of angra and now in shaaman). Maybe Judas Priest is more influencial in USA but in the whole world are the Irons for far. I think that they are the second most influential because the first around all the world is Metallica. Up the Irons!!!!

Metallica more influential than Judas Priest?????? dude Metallica appeared in the mid eighties and Judas Priest exited almost 20 years before Metallica.... you are confusing the fame with the influence... ye everybody listen now to Metallica but that doesn't mean they would be that influential... I can assure u that Judas Priest is more influential than Metallica that's why they ain't in the poll...

While this isn't really what the original question asks, I think we should take into account the amazingly strong influence Maiden has had over hardcore/metalcore. Practically all (modern) bands within these genres cite Maiden as influences, and their use of Maideny harmonies is proof of this.

Maiden have a very potential influence because they start to use the two guitar harmonics in their songs make them the main thing, while judas is the first metal band that execute the sounds to a higher level, so my thinkin is this: Without judas, there can't be Iron maiden

priest only infuenced rock??you've got to be kidding!!they had huge influence on the image of metal, intoduced 2 lead guitars, high pitched vocals and they had a huge influence on speed metal...just listen to songs like "stained class", "dissident aggressor" or "delivering the goods," realize those are from 1977-1978 and if you still consider that to be just hard rock, you'll need to take another look at the entire 70's metal scene!!

i think people dont really know hat Judas Priest did or even are looking at all of this i mean come on - you just have to look at bands like Gamma Ray and Primal Fear Judas Priest influenced Iron Maiden and so everything onwards from there.. they influenced Helloween, and so pretty much all power metal and such it really annoys me how people dont give Judas Priest the credit they deserve! they were around before Iron Maiden - when Iron Maiden ame along they were accused of 'ripping off' Judas Priest if people think Judas Priest are more rock, then they really havent given their 70's albums excluding 'Rocka Rolla' (before Iron Maidne ones) a chance 'Sad Wings Of Destiny' is where traditional heavy mtal as it is now was born in my opinion. i just hate that Judas Priest dont get any credit now because Iron Maiden are so much more commercial haha, i probably sayd way back up there somewhere this thread would annoy me
