Buying by faith or by listening to the album first?

I wanted to know if people also buy, like me, albums by trusting a band. There are some bands of whom I have more than trust of the high quality of their works as to go to the store and buy their albums right away. As a matter of fact, I am thinking of going to the store and picking Slayer's new album (after their EP of course) without any hesitation. Not only for a new release of Slayer I would do that, but for several other bands which I perceived as if they have a "winning formula" that does not allow them to put a record that can be considered less than good.

Also, at times I go with the opinions of other Metalheads and I venture myself into buying albums of genres that I like very much. Of course, I need to see that this band is praised a lot by the people liking them and that they give reasons for liking them so much. Then I try to listen to some songs from the band and if they are good I decide to buy the album. Up until now this strategy hasn't failed me.

Then, there are those who have to listen to the whole album before deciding to spend any money in them.

I would say that I do a little of all the strategies I mentioned above. It all depends of the circumstances. None, of them has failed me yet, except for one time in which I bought this crappy album for this crappy band but let us forget that now. lol

Now, how do you decide to buy albums? Do you go blindly to the store to buy them or are you really cautious in what you spend your money?

Well, about 4 years ago, when i wasn't interested in metal music very much, i went to one shop, there was lots of casettes of pop music and they were not very expensive. Suddenly I came across one band: its name resembles me something, and i decided to buy it. I think it's not necessary to describe my feeling after listening to this casette, because band's name was Nightwish...

And now sometimes I buy CDs of bands, which i never listened to - i heard only the name. And I have never been disappointed yet.

Buy by faith. You should always research beforehand however.

Both actually. If I will check out a new band, I often reads reviews of their albums or reads other peoples opinions. Like here on MS for example. The band name or the cover art can also get my atttention. For example bands like In The Woods, Ljå and Primordial turned out to be really good. And I they just got my attention because of the art work and name.

Often by trusting the band.. If for example Sentenced releases a album.. I dont have to listen to it before i buy it.. I know that these guys can't do a bad album

But you can't just go and buy an album and have no idea what the band sounds like ;P

Haha nice topic!
I usually listen to the album first, and then buy it.... But it depends in what band we are talking about
for ex:
Maiden= Ill buy in feith!
Sepultura= Get some MP3s first, and then mighty buy the album

Usually i either ask an opinion, listen to a few MP3s or have had past releses from the band and have faith in them....

However, occasionaly... I can just enter a music store and purchase an album based on the cover/art work/band name logo alone... An example of an occasion I have done this is with Nightrage's 'Descent Into Chaos'

for me i like to check lyrics and get samples b4 buying , that the cd doesn't have aomething against The God which the most important thing to me ...

but if it's related to one of my top fav. bands i would buy it by faith
like Kalmah, Eternal Tears of Sorrow to me are top fav's so i buy any cd for them without trying it..
but here was a trick that when i bought EToS's debut album without listening for it ... that it's instuments wasn't all that good ... but the melodies themselves were good

I usually listen first and then buy, like I download a song sample and then I go order or buy it, but there are a few exceptions, like Tool's last album, I haven't heard it, and I won't until I have it original in my hands hehe, I so love Tool

I always download songs first before buying them to be on the safe side. But yeah, I make it a point to buy music when I like what I'm hearing. Mp3s cannot replace the joy of owning a CD!

Because I don't want to risk with money, I've always bought the album after I heard the whole album like 4 or 5 times

I just don't have the money to buy a cd unless I absolutely love it. Chances are if I couldn't download, I wouldn't buy as many cds as I do now because I wouldn't want to risk spending cash on something I didn't like that I couldn't return and couldn't resell for even as much as I bought it for.
People who say that downloading is immoral are ignoring the basic reality of downloading. I made a post about this on the old forum (and it was a lot of typing, so I'm not doing the whole thing again). There are really 4 types of downloaders - people who replace cd buying with cd downloading, people who download to try something out, people who download music that is no longer commercially available, and people who download music that's freely avaliable. Of these, only the last one is legal. Of these, only the first one actually hurts the music industry, and this harm is almost entirely or entirely negated by the effects of the second, which boost record sales.

I sometimes download a song or two of a band if havent heard any or much of their material but heard about them being good or the type of style that i like or if be recommened listen to by fans of other bands. Other wise im spending $25-35 AUD on an album / band that i might not like or listen to again, which im sure has happened to some of you.

Most of the time I do put my trust in the bands that i know and really like and enjoy listening because i like their stuff enough to listen to it again instead of just letting it sit there not being used.

It depends on the band really, I'll buy everything that has Alice Cooper or Judas Priest on it, but otherwise I search the internet for reviews about the albums I'm planning to buy. But as I've got too much albums in my collection, I don't think that I'll buy that much albums in the future anymore and I'll try to some money for other things...

I would say a bit of both.

With some bands you're just guaranted quality. Like Iron Maiden. In IM's case I would buy an album by faith. With new bands I'll read reviews, listen to samples or mp3s or ask around before buying and porbably give it a listen down at shop just to be sure.

Well I think both , like mention before I have found wonderful bands just because I like the cover and they look really interesting , but at the same time I have found not so appealing bands but it's ok .. I mean you can always give the cd you don't like to someone who likes it or sell it I don't know ...and well sometimes I listen first to the samples when I can't afford to by it just by faith ..some bands Like Therion I know I will never be dissapointed so sometimes I don't even bother to look at the samples but well in some cases is good to do research ....

Well, it depends on how much I liked the bands earlier records and also on how much money i got. A few years ago I was in a better economic situation and bought more albums and more out of faith, like if I liked the band before or if many people recommended it. I have also bought a lot of stuff secondhand, just having heard of the artist. Somtimes that wasn't wery succesfull but someimes a pleasantsuprise like when I just happened to find Therions Vovin. Now there is always the possibility of downloading the music before which had made it easier to decide (I usually end up buying it later even if I downloaded the whole album).

Well It have happened to me too, I mean, I've bought cd's without knowing anything of the bands, just faith or some comments that my friends have said.
In one or an other way I've always been satisfice.
I just trust in the people and in myself.

It depends. If it is a band I already know is good, by faith. If it is a new band, research, download a song or two, then decide if it is worth buying.

Pretty much like everyone else i do bits of both.
I don't do it as much since I am much more conscience of it. Usually if there was a new band that had similar musical qualities to a current band that I like, then I would search for mp3's on the web. but because it's so damn hard to find mp3's of a band that few people know of, hopefully I wouldn't make the mistake of just assuming it was good enough to buy.
Of course since i'm not one to listen to myself and find the album of that band, I end up buying it and 9 times out of 10 they are crap.

I still do it sometimes just not as often now, I try to research a bit more into it before buying or go by others opinions of that band. I'm just god-awful with my natural assumption that the band is good.

I usually already know the band or at least some songs from that certain album or from that band. But there have also been many cases when I just need something new and fresh - so I just try them out by buying theyr CD - even if I dont know them so well. I guess I always have this fait that maybe they will suprise me somehow - in a good way of course.

90% of the time, its a band i have heard a few tracks of, or i know heaps about them or theres something making me want to get the album.
Bands in this category include:
Killswitch Engage, Ill Nino, In Flames, Slipknot, Shadows Fall, Stone Sour, Mudvayne, etc.

10% of the time i have bought a cd just out of pure curiosity, have i been dissapointed? have i been shocked, but a happy shocked? yes i have for both...i bought The Truth which was released by Bleeding Through, dont get me wrong the band sound good, but it just isnt my sort of music. I also bought Caliban - The Undying Darkness, which out of curiosity i have found to be one of my favourite albums of all time, i find it encaptivating. Another band which i was happy with the random choice of buying was Still Remains - Of Love And Lunacy, which i actually found really awesome tooo...

if u want a different cd, non metal, but by memberso f the metal i recomend "To My Suprise" - Selftitled....to my surprise it was an amazing and different cd!!

haha sorry for the lame joke there ^^ couldnt resist haha

cheers, Todd

There are certain bands out there, that I'll buy by faith. But most, because the quality fluctuates, I'll listen first. As far as reviews, since I am more lenient than a lot of critics, I'll read reviews more to find out what style of metal the band plays. If it's one I've never heard before. If I'm interested I'll try to listen before buying.

My answer will be the same as most people . If it's a band i know I like I will buy the album regardless of reviews.
For other bands I rely on other peoples opinions - magazine reviews etc. But I always try to find a few samples before I buy.
I also have a good friend who knows my musical taste and he recommends a lot of bands to me.
Metal Storm is very good for this also - there are so many bands on here that I have never heard of.

How would we ever find all these bands without the internet?

both...I have bought many albums just going to the store and picking them, just because I've heard of the band or to try something new, that I've never listened before....In this way, I've discovered bands like Enthroned and Vader....I also buy albums after I've heard pf course(either the entire album or samples)

I used to buy by faith, trusting the bands I love and reviewers who wrote the album was pretty good, but I just can't spend so much money in music now so I don't buy ant album blindly anymore.
Now I download some tracks (or the whole album), listen to what I've downloaded several times before deciding whether this album is worth buying or not... Because I want to support some artists I love who don't make much money, so if they deserve it because of the quality of their work I can't see why I wouldn't buy the album even if I've already downloaded it...
But buying by faith is a great feeling IMO... It's far more enjoyable to find out you're not disappointed while listening to the CD for the first time, holding the songbook, admiring the cover,... It's a kind of magic which won't work if you've listened to some samples first
