So, basically, im doing a history assignment, where i have to 'examine how a media text represents an historical individual, event or issue'

so i have chosen to do a slection of metal songs that have to do with wars, or things related to wars

so it would be good to get a list of songs of this type

my list so far:

metallica-disposable heroes
black sabbath-war pigs
Kalmah-heroes to us
machine head-farewell to arms
arch enemy-silent wars

so any more would be appreciated

Hmm... I'm partial to 2 Minutes To Midnight, by Iron Maiden, myself. This song is about the cold war. We were "two minutes from midnight" (a nuclear holocaust). The unborn in the womb was the action of launching. "Killing it" would be to press the button and destoy all.

And Neuraxis' Cyberwar.

The ants ofcourse symbolize the countries that have a minor role in the world politics and the rhinos, well obviously the super powers such as U.S.A , Russia and China.

Yes Gettysburg is a brilliant one, each individual tune in this song is related to either side of the war, in my opinion, one of the greatest war epics ever released that ive heard.

@ K7: Yep theres Waterloo, a great famous battle

//Yeah because its based off a movie (i think its called johnny got his gun or something like that) and he got everything blown off in a war and is living against his will. Also a whole plethora of Megadeth like Holy Wars, Blackmail the Universe, and Washington is next, kind of indirectly though. Idk if you could say Sacrificed Sond by Dream Theater or not. LaBrie's talking about 9/11 which led to the war, but doesnt talk about the war directly//

I was actually thinking about how well war and Metal seem to go together as I was watching Arnie's 'Commando' movie late last night. What popped into my head, just now, as I'm sure someone has said is Slayer's "War Ensemble." A great song indeed. I especially love their performance of it at Download 2005 in this video:

Metallica has a lot of war songs. Most things off of Master of Puppets and ...And Justice For All are about war.

One is about someone being kept alive in a war hospital even though they have nothing left and their life is like hell. I believe it's based on Johnny Got His Gun.

Nonononononono

There were many similarities between the lyrical content of One and the book (and movie) Johnny Got His Gun, but One was not based on JGHG. The band was actually made aware of the similarities after they already had come up with the concept (and a large portion of the lyrics) for One during the Master of Puppets sessions. Specifically, they were discussing what it would be like to be alive but totally cut off from the world. The idea of making the central character a soldier actually came out of the writing for Disposable Heroes and this is what ultimately led to them using the footage from the movie in the video.

This is a general misconception that was well-documented back in the day when the album/song/video were all new. It was usually part of the same discussions as "Metallica made a video? Fucking sell-outs!" and "The Wizard of Oz in a Metallica song? Fucking poseurs!" and "Cliff didn't write 'To Live is To Die' man, that's bullshit and just way too convenient - James and Lars made that shit up so Cliff would go down as some sort of prophet. Fucking sell-out poseurs!"

However, most of the information you will find on the internet today will claim that the song was based on the book/movie - and James himself has even alluded to as much in interviews over the past few years - amazing how history changes, isn't it? Too bad I don't have all my old Hit Parader and Circus mags or I could probably scan in a dozen or more quotes where both James and Lars denied the connection and explained it as I have explained it above.

//I never heard that before either. i think you might be a little off because they released a DDVD called Metallica : The Videos and in the interview about one, lars says that they got the idea off the movie and talked about the process they had to go through to get the rights for it//

They got the idea for the video from the movie, but not for the song itself. After they came up with the concept, someone (not sure if they ever said who it was) told them about the similarities between their song concept and JGHG. It was then that James read the book and watched the movie and thought that it captured the mood and emotion they were going for perfectly, so they bought the rights to the film for use in the video. I believe James may have re-written portions of the song around the new concept, but the song itself was never "based on" JGHG.

As I mentioned before, this was a topic of much discussion back in '88 & '89 and there were numerous interviews in which both James and Lars discussed it. What we need is some more old-timers that remember it or, better yet, some back-issues of the big magazines of the time (Hit Parader, Creem, RIP, Circus, etc.) that have interviews in them.
