Which bands are you sick of hearing being covered at shows or on cds? I've been having this conversation off and on with my friends. They like to hear Slayer or Metallica covers and I'm pretty much damn sick of them. Those bands are covered all the time at shows; especially by these local bands. 85% of the time these bands are crap. Any band that reverts to Metallica or Slayer are stuck in a shit band category in my opinion. I think its a total cop out and proves to me that they lack in skill and creativity in picking a good band to cover.

My band, Apothys, covers Death - Crystal Mountain. People sing along with it at shows and mosh to it. That's what I want. Sure, you can mosh to Slayer, but covering Slayer seriously takes originality points away in my eyes. Any reviewer who was at our shows explains how they appreciated how we could cover Death and how well we played it. It wasn't played perfectly, but it got everyone's attention. We will not be known as another band who covered Slayer or Metallica. The more technical and meaningful a song is, the better recognized we will be. So all of you people who want to cover Slayer, go a head. Let the better bands cover better songs.

Forgot to mention WASP. I don't know what it is but I have only heard 1 decent WASP cover out of the billions I've wasted my time with.

I hate how many bands seem to be fond of covering Iron maiden and Slayer, all have been coverd to death.
Actually I would like to see a band covering a total diffirent style song - like Turisas cover of the 70ties disco hit Rasputin.

the only folk cover I ever heard it's Skyclad's Penny Dreadful by Elvenking, decent song IMO.

like Turisas cover of the 70ties disco hit Rasputin.

The only problem with that is you could become known as a novelty band, thats why I hear Turisas barely play that song live anymore, they dont want to get known as "that viking metal band who play disco covers". Which is understandable.

The worst band to cover must be Devil Doll. 'Cuz there's no band out there which could make a decent cover of their (one hour long) songs. It's really hard to explain why, listen to them and you'll see.

Iron Maiden and Judas Priest are pretty excellent to cover. The general rule is "don't cover their signature song", which should almost ALWAYS be followed.

This is true, I also think you should only cover a band you actually know something about or have a general interest in, especially if its an iconic band. For example, I went to see this fairly big punk band at a bar (I actually forget the name), a band touring across half of Canada, and during there set they played 'Ace Of Spades', there isn't many actual Motorhead fans in my area (theres the odd person wearing the cliche Motorhead-England t-shirt but dont know more than 2 songs) so I got fairly pumped about another 'Head fan, I went up and talked to the lead singer after the show hopefully to strike up a good Motorhead convo, but I found out the guy didn't know anything about the band!, And I assume it wasn't any of the other band members ideas since he was telling me about how he writes all the music for the band and decides the setlist......man I was pissed.

some metallica and slayer covers are alright
only if theyre by bands that have talent, and can add a twist
eg: apocalyptica, did alot of metallica songs, and a slayer song
but if you cant play anything
then why bother
i want to see a cover of a DragonForce song

i admit that the vids are a little weird, and they use a fair amount of sound effects
but they still play pretty insane music

I've spotted some videos on youtube of bands covering Iced Earth, included a tribute band called Violate. Hard to tell how good they actually are because of the piss-poor sound quality. Also caught a thrash metal band covering the song Violate, sounded pretty good until the frontman started singing, terrible!

I think bands should mix covers more often, experiment with different songs interwoven. Dream Theater kinda did that on Change of Seasons with the medley, but my favorite is Tool's "Diary of a Lovesong" combining Diary of a Madman and The Cure's "Lovesong."

I also like covers that attempt to be humorous, sometimes, i.e. Nanowar.

I heard these two covers by Stuck Mojo with Devin Townsend that were just plain awful: Wrathchild and Shout At The Devil.
They added a nice low-end heaviness and Devin's vocals were spot-on, but the occasional rapping vocals were just awful and ruined everything.

It's funny how bands like Sum 41 say they praise Maiden and Priest but never attempt a cover, let alone sound anything like a band inspired by those legends.

I'm just gonna guess and say Rush because their technical juggernauts. most of the bass tabs I've looked up are ridiculous but I'm getting there. Since every member of the band is a legend of their instruments it would probably be hard to find musicians that can match it.

The reason bands do this is because people know those songs, i feel that they should cover one song by a popular band to get peoples attention then a more underground song to get people into different things. what im sick of is people cover the mainstream songs that are always covered like enter sandman, one, ride the lighting and rain in blood, they should cover other songs like harvester of sorrow, broken beat and scared, epidemic, cult and postmortem; the songs that are great and moreso only known by the truer fans of the bands.:necro:

In my band crematory demise, we seem to like to cover Morbid Angel's Rapture, Death's Pull the Plug, and Cannibal Corpse's Hammer Smashed Face, sure probably the most well known death metal songs, but we also sometime cover kreator, amon amarth, mercyful fate, the bans we cover are always changing

I think that covers are generally a bad idea. Most bands just record a song by another artist without adding anything new, or changing anything. What is the point then? To hear "The Sentinel" sung by Rob Flynn, obviously 100 times worse than Halford's version? To listen to "Dissident Aggressor" where Tom Araya's vocals aren't nearly good enough to replace Rob Halford's, so the high-pitched parts are done by guitars?

I happened to give 2 examples of Judas Priest covers, but I could give 1000 more, equally unsuccessful. The only reason for doing a good cover is when a band decides to change the song and present it in another way, sometimes completely different. Like Grope covering "Spill the Blood", or Acid Drinkers covering "Seek and Destroy". These are examples where the covers actually make sense, because the covering band changes a song considerably. Acid Drinkers are the best at it - they released 2 full length albums with covers: Fishdick and Fishdick Zwei. Not only do they cover a lot non-metal songs, but they also re-invent every song for their own use. Anyone into covers should give these 2 albums a listen.

I see covers as a tribute. Bands play songs from bands they like and/or were an influence to them.
I don't agree with most Metallica, Slayer and Maiden covers but I understand it: a lot of bands were influenced by them.

So for me there aren't "good" or "bad" bands to cover as long as it's done ok.
