"Gothic"; well, if you ask for my opinion I will tell you that this is one of the purest and most influential releases of the 90s. Paradise Lost, touched by the hand of Goth, after a fabulous, primary though, doom/death metal debut album, "Lost Paradise", release during 1991 their second full-length album, "Gothic", the milestone of gothic metal (I'm talking about pure gothic metal, inner withering world, emotional decadence, intense dark/gloomy aesthetic, not nowadays' tendency of a band being considered as a gothic metal one if they use female vocals or they sound melancholic neither the bands talking about emotions of love etc deeply influenced by the dark wave and electro-gothic scene - dark wave and electro-gothic have nothing to do with gothic rock that planted the seeds of gothic metal through "Gothic" - of course gothic metal nowadays has progressed since then and moves in more "commercial" soundscapes). Some people will disagree with me by saying that "Gothic" is pure doom/death metal in a time (1990-1991) when doom/death was just an idea floating in the air; if you listen carefully to "Gothic" you'll see that although it steps on what began with "Lost Paradise" it is way different and more various, musically and emotionally, something new and deeply personal. The distortion of the guitars is softer, but still heavy, and The Sisters of Mercy influences on the guitar work are obvious, influences expressed through a heavier prism of course.

As fresh-sounding as Lost Paradise was, its doom death metal style was not something that hadn't been tried before. But thirty years ago, Paradise Lost unleashed the first and greatest - still to this day - gothic death metal album. Albeit engulfed in darkness, Gothic has a 'lighter' guitar approach than its predecessor, relying very much on the eerie lead melodies instead of on the earth-shattering riffs of the debut. The ethereal female vocals and the creepy keyboards made it an even more divisive affair among the fans and most people dismissed the band at the time for "selling out". Luckily, this band never cared about metalheads' opinions and they made it very clear from very early in their career. Gothic is the pinnacle of gothic metal and Paradise Lost's most groundbreaking album in a tremendously successful career characterized by groundbreaking albums.

Neither death nor doom metal, there is no death's trademark rhythmic hooks.
This is purely a Gothic metal album (with death vocals influenced) that irritates me a lot.

I reached my limit on the 5th track - Eternal, then eject !

hmmm is this a troll? If you aren't a troll then... okay.. I'll take the bait: This is one of the stupidest things I've ever read in my entire life regarding metal.

"This is purely a gothic metal album" nope, just no. There is absolutely no reason you can classify this album as a "gothic" metal album, are you genuinely insane?

"with death vocals influence" + "Neither death nor doom metal" again... just WHAT? What does this even mean you retard.

Holy fucking shit this comment triggers me.

They're "annoying" because my posts made a "good entertainment" for them ? So I sould be providing "bad entertainment" to make them "happy" instead ? You seriously need a doctor. By the way, I'm civilized, I don't backfire, look at my smiling face here >>>

Very overrated indeed, it's still a good album but I still have a hard time seeing how much of a fanbase it has considering the debut is waaaaaaaaaaay stronger.

Must be because compared to the debut, this one is far more melodic and cheesy. And people love that.

It has a unique sound, with such a deep guitar tone, and the slow chugging riffs which build a dark depressing atmosphere, and the harsh vocals are amongst the best in death doom, I also like the female vocals in parts too. There is no doubt that this is an iconic album that plays a vital part in establishing the death doom genre.

Despite all this, I haven't quite warmed to the sound as much as I would like, I find the production a wee bit too raw for me for this kind of style. I also think sone of the songs are too short, instead I would of preferred lengthier and less songs, which would allow the atmosphere to sink in more.

The content and name of this album have a positive effect on inspiring later gothic metal, but... the production is really bad.
