A simple question. what genre or style of metal have you been listening too lately? And what band spurred it?

Lately its been stoner/sludge metal. Obviously I'm already a High On Fire fan, but Orange Goblin has kicked it off recently, a little Down and a touch of Sahg. Good stuff.

I have actually been listening to a lot of Immortal early stuff, which I thought I would never like since their later stuff is a lot more thrash influenced. I really like it. Pure Holocaust is awesome.

Well just to be perfectly clear, DEATH METAL, for the last 2 years or slightly less. You can't find that everlasting agression in any other metal subgenre or music for that matter, yeah yeah grindcore is the exception. The very first band that got me into the genre was Decapitated with 'Nihility' and then Suffocation with their self titled.

Another genre that's been creeping up on me for a few months is the post/avantgarde metal stuff. I mainly stick to Pelican, Isis and God Is An Astronaut but thanks to the MS awards i found these fabulous sickos known as Virus. Leave some recs if you have any and i'll give you a thanks in advance. There it is, don't miss it fools.

My taste very rarely follows specific genre's rather it sways through several genre's depending on my mood, desire and what I am doing. Lately; however, I have found myself listening to a lot of Heavy, and Power metal I guess it started a few months ago when I acquired 'The crucible of Man' by Iced Earth and I havn't really stopped listening to similar bands since.

I've been getting into thrash metal a lot. I never listened to much thrash besides the really big name American bands such as Megadeth and Metallica. But after listening to Kreator and Warbringer a couple weeks ago, I've gone straight into a thrash metal binge.

I have been involved with some death metal recently. I've listened to some bands that, my fault :p, I used to ignore: like Cryptopsy. Then, I took a deep dive into the '00s "Progressive Metal" scene (call it as you want), trying some interesting bands like Aghora and To-Mera.

That is, inside the metal area.

I'm trying to get into some avantgarde type metal because a friend of mine recommended me The Sham Mirrors by Arcturus and it's an absolutely killer record. I don't know where to go from there, though, because I guess Arcturus is a hard act to find similarities to.

Indeed, and that album is an absolute gem.

Anyway, you might try The Dystopia Journals, debut album by Norwegian band Vulture Industries.

This is because I've been discovering pretty cool bands lately, plus 2009 seems a good year for this genre. The bands I talk about are: Wolves In The Throne Room, Blut Aus Nord, Absu, Peste Noir, Amesoeurs.
Don't forget that Alcest and Shining are two of my very fav bands too

I wouldn't know exactly what to call this specific genre, but I'm really digging bands like Into Eternity, Scar Symmetry, Mercenary, Zero Hour... they are like, a perfect blend of progressive/power metal and melodic death metal. I was always one for "original" and unique sounds and being a musician myself, it's not so easy to blend influences to that extent and make it sound crazy-awesome.
