Of all genres of music, metal is unique because the line between "acceptable" and "total failure" is very narrow. Making metal is easy, but making good metal... difficult. Periodically, metal bands either sell out or have personal problems, and they create metal failures. Here's a list of ten of the worst metal FAILs of all time.

The most epic METAL FAILs of all time

I'm also going to go out on a limb and say that Massacre The Promise and Judas Priest Ram it Down should be on the list.

Actually the failure of that album was that they sold out. And even let the producre deicde how the songs had to be. All this for the almighty dollar.

According to the ratings, 1349 latest album was a failure. Why? Since we have no review.

I have friends that worship 1349.

i totally agree for the band's failure but as an album there much more worse in metals hhistory. it is a decent effort. a bad metallica album. but not a failure as load, reload and st anger are... these albums are made of shit.

Actually the failure of that album was that they sold out. And even let the producre deicde how the songs had to be. All this for the almighty dollar.

If you read the list's exclaimer closely it isn't actually about the so-called worst albums ever but more about the biggest letdowns ever.
And let me assure you that almost ALL Metallica fans were immensely let down at the time when metallica was released.

i believe you on that. it's quite logical. but i got the word "failure" literal and not as "the greatest dissapointment" cause in the second case i agree with what is said till now...

Well, that's the only way I can explain those ten albums.
Hell were we talking FAILS as in the sense you mean than all of The Great Kat's discography should be on it. Annd also quite a few totally horrendous German thrash bands, loads of balck metal and death metal as well, some truly atrocious doom bands etc etc.

It is always confusing as to what constitutes a failure in metal circles. Largely this is because as the opening post suggests; the line between good and bad metal is quite narrow. The other thing is that because of metals 'anti-conformity' attitude, a sound that is good now will not always be good. In saying that though, notice that most of the albums that are considered 'failures' still often rate overall on ms above 6/10 with only a handful of exceptions and usually deservedly. In other music circles 6/10 would not be considered 'bad' and yet in metal circle we tend to hold very high standards for bands and what we expect of them.
Confusing; yes, different for other genres; yes.
Metal is a very broad genre that covers more subgenres than any other type of music in the world. Notice that each metal fan generally has their own unique 'taste' of metal. Whereas, if you are a fan of Madonna, you will generally like most other female pop artists as well (Or at least to some extent). Once again in metal it is quite different, Some people for example love Metallica, but hate Megadeth and visa verse'. Yet they are considered quite similar in many ways.

I don't really care about the bands motivation or whether it's more radio-friendly if the end result is good. Black album had 3 decent tracks (That maybe I only like through listening to them prior to really getting into metal) and a bunch of stuff I don't listen to. I listen to Countdown... all the way through. It wasn't as good as RIP but that doesn't stop me enjoying it. but surely you could argue the same about Metallica. Why do younger metal fans generally dislike later Metallica and whinge about them being sellouts but not Megadeth? I'd say it's because even when it's clear that they were going a bit soft, they were still good. Also, Metallica went from releasing an album of proggish thrash to dumb rock music. Maybe Megadeth's change seemed a bit less abrupt so didn't polarise opinions as much.

But opinions are like arseholes and I don't like using general consensus to prove a point.

Yet again, quoted without notification.

The key part of your response is this: "I'd imagine I would have been disappointed if I'd been around at the time ". bingo. it still astounds me that people don't see it. put on "RIP", then that album immediately after... from buzzing, fast , complicated, intricate riffs to boring, slowed-down, radio friendly drivel. the best of "Countdown" wouldn't even make the cut as a b-side on "Rust In Peace".

You go one thereafter about Metallica, but i certainly don't absolve them. they are failure numero uno to Megadave taking the silver.

why do metal fans lay off Megadave while bash upon Metallica?

simple.

it's cool to bash Metallica. and lots of folks 'round here love jumping on the "it's cool to bash this" bandwagon, with stops at Metallica, Cradle of Filth, Dimmu, MetalCore, Nu-Metal, Alternative Metal (an express stop), Glam Metal, and finally, Rap. Ripping those bands/genres scores folks "true points" or whatever, which is why people do it, rather than, i don't know, just skip those threads like i try to do with Manodouche or flowerpower threads.

i'd also argue that if MegaDave had gone toe-to-toe with Metallica and remained as commercially viable - thus almost as popular - it would be just as cool to bash them.

After all, it took Metallica 15+ years to go from Top 10 All-Time albums to Bottom 20 ("Puppets" in '86 to "Saint Anger" in '03)... Megadeth made that exact same slide in under a decade ("RIP" in '90 to "Risk" in '99).

but then again, as you pointed out, everyone has an asshole, which might explain why folks go easy on the asshole fronting Megadeth when he spits out crap here and there.

Anything released before 1970

considering Black Sabbath's self titled release, out in 1970, is widely held as the starting point for metal, i am not sure how proto-metal or rock-n-roll could be construed as metal failure. that's like claiming Discharge is Grindcore failure...

i think the point of this thread sailed over your head. way over your head.

Music started in 1970 haha

highly amusing given you have many bands listed in your profile who were very clearly and obviously inspired by classical, jazz, and other forms of music that existed well before 1970.

I don't know why it hasn't already been mentioned but well I forgot this one too. This has definitely got to be in the top 3. One of the most essential and influential albums to one of the most embarrassing albums ever released.

And no one give me any of this "not metal" crap.

I do not mind many of the albums on the list, including the black album. But Domination I fucking love. his arguments on what makes it a failure are totally unconvincing. He compares its sound to Pantera's (which is in itself a pretty huge stretch) but does nothing other than label it "bouncy" to explain why sounding like Pantera is undesirable.
