All these bands have been known for being elite both outside and inside metal world, but sometimes they got the wrong idea
Remeber when you were waiting even 3 years for your favorite band's brand new album, you run to the store buy the album (in a higher price cause is hot, you don't even want to wait until it gets cheaper) and back to your home or in your car you put that disc with that smell of new and push "Play" and you say WTF IS THIS??? Did I got a wrong album??, you check the cover and nop your nightmare is not, this albums sucks, well, that happened to me with last Sonata's album, I was about to crash my father's car because of the shock, well, I think you got my point, lets talk about your experience, tell us which album dissappointed you the most and how was your experience. C'mon ppl talk and get back here

Mine would have to have been Shadows Fall's Threads of life. I was expecting it to be at least as technical as "The War Within" because thier music seemed to be following a pretty good trend, and I could only detect the slightest incline toward comercialism. Then they signed to a bigger Label and released "Fallout From the War"- which was a compilation of B-sides from The War Within. That album in itself was a disapointment, but I just kept on telling myself that they were just B-sides, and their next album would kill for sure. Well, guess what their next album didn't do? It sure didn't kill, and it sure as hell didn't entertain me except for the acception of like, two songs. Me and my friend went and bought it the day it dropped, and when we popped it into the CD player, we cringed. I even wrote my most negative review released to date on that album (even though I STILL gave it more credit than what it was worth, me being a fanboy). Damn, that was an awful experience. Their next release probably won't make my CD collection, not unless they make some major changes to their sound (in a good way, I don't know how they could get any worse at this point.)

One of my recent letdowns was Def Leppard's last album (Songs from the Sparkle Lounge) - how the mighty have fallen . I simply got pissed off while listening to it - nothing sparkles there frankly, no fresh ideas, no catchy riffs, avarage guitar playing. And they collaborate with some trendy country singer?! (I got nothing against country music) - was this supposed to make things better?

I am going to have to agree with you on this one. "Threads Of Life" was such a major let down for me also. The mix I thought was crappy, the song witting had become generic, and it was over all boring. I think for me, the biggest disappointment though, was both the production on Brian's vocals, and his choice to go for a cleaner vox. I think it undercut the ferocity of the band by about 50%. So sad, so sad.

Oh gods yes, I completely agree. The way he changed his vocals on that album just absolutely pissed me off. Man, it really did take alot of the energy out of the album.

I didn't realize Metallica can make such a disaster album St. Anger... The following albums were not good as well... I hated the James Hetfield vocals trying to sound melodic with no power at all! But thanks to their old stuffs i can still remember how great they were...

I voted for St Anger but I think The Unspoken King by Cryptopsy should be on that list, one of the worst letdowns in death metal history. I think is common for a band to change and have a more mature sound but when you listen to this deathcore piece of crap you think that you are listening to a different band. I think its best for them to change the name of the band.

I don't really understand some picks in the poll as "worst letdown ever". A lot of those albums were not the start of the band's suckyness, because they already started sucking before(Children of Bodom, Metallica, In Flames, Megadeth). Why is Kreator's Endorama on the list? while Outcast is considered the worst Kreator album. How ever I voted other:

Rammstein - Rosenrot
Is the only album that comes close for me being the worst letdown ever. Back in the day I was still a fan of Rammstein, I had already discoverd other greater metal bands but I remained fan. I was looking forward to Rosenrot a lot, I thought it was going to revive my love for Rammstein. Oh man, what was I wrong.... Rosenrot sucked SO BAD! Rosenrot is like those 2 last songs on each Rammstein album where they play soft songs acoustic like songs which sound so awkward and lame you skip them the instant you hear them. Rosenrot is an album full with those songs with just a few industrial like songs but even those suck. I already get angry when people say it was a meh album, it's not meh it's F*CKING HORRIBLE!

endorama was the most "Far from Thrash" album and many people claim IT as their worse. also outcast is a great "gothic" album. i don't see it being their worse.

Got Mayhem?
I went with COB, Are You Dead Yet?
The others are all bad and in some cases horrible but AYDY was a slap in the face to me. I really enjoy previous COB albums but the direction that AYDY took and later Blooddrunk was almost personally painful.

There's no doubt that 'St. Anger' is one of the biggest steaming piles in metal history. But, by then I had already given up on Metallica, which at one time was one of my favorite bands. So, it wasn't a real let down - more of the continued slide into crapdom. Although Megadeth had mellowed, I was still along for the ride when 'Risk' came out. Risk - what a real let down. But, I'll always be a bonehead for Megadeth.

The only one of those bands which wasn't really really bad before the album in the poll showed up was Megadeth with their Risk album (ok, Youthanasia wasn't that good either but it was still decent), and that album (since it was the first Megadeth I had heard) put me off Megadeth for years. Therefore my vote clearly goes to Risk.

The other bands sucked even before those albums came out. Megadeth didn't to such an extent.

I find it horribly amusing people think "Saint Anger" was the biggest let down ever. my guess is most are just jumping on the "it's cool to bash metallica bandwagon" and here's why:

Chronological listing of albums and user ratings:

Kill 'em All - 8.6
Ride The Lightning - 9.2 (currently top album ever as i post this)
Master of Puppets - 9.2 (#3 all time at the time of posting)
...And Justice For All... - 8.9
Metallica (a/k/a Black Album) - 8.2
Load - 6.3
Reload - 6
Saint Anger - 3.9

Notice a trend? Metallica were a band already in pretty much a free-fall. The drop betwen "Metallica" and "Load" was every bit as significant as the drop between "Reload" and "Saint Anger" - both about two full points.

It's not like "Saint Anger" was the follow-up to "Master of Puppets" or anything. If you expected "Saint Anger", given Metallica's performance over hte past 15 years, to be some Top-20 release like "RTL" or "MOP" you are delusional.

Fwiw, comparing drops in quality "mathematically" -

In Flames "Come Clarity" actually scored higher than it's predecessor, "Soundtrack", 7.2 to 7.
Kreator's "Endorama" scored the exact same rating as it's two predecessors - 7.5
Sonata Arctica and Children of Bodom both dropped about a point each from mid-8's to mid 7's with their let downs.
Helloween's "Chameleon" was a 6.1 to "Pink Bubbles Go Ape's" 6.8... and that was a huge let down off "Seven Keys Part II", which scored a 9. that drop bigger than that between "reload" and "saint anger"

but the big let down:

Megadeth's drop from Cryptic Writings (7.6) to Risk (5.3) was 2.3 points - larger than either of Metallica's big letdowns.

winner winner chicken dinner for megadave.

I agree with you two previous posts. As I stated in my post (a few before yours):

1. Metallica - 'St. Anger' was a continued slide into crapdom.
2. Megadeth - 'Risk' was a real let down.

The first time I heard it, I was as about as nauseated as the first time I heard Judas Priest's Turbo. This is a painful lesson that even some seasoned bands have to learn the hard way. You can only mellow out so far and you don't follow the popular trend.

I had to go with "Other" and date myself a bit.

Hands down the biggest letdown in the history of metal has to be Judas Priest's Turbo album. To follow up the classics Screaming for Vengeance and Defenders of the Faith with such a giant pile of stinking rotten pop metal cheese is almost unforgivable. The lyrics are some of the worst to be found in metal, not that lyrics have historically been one of Priest's strong suits. To hear a forty something guy in leather scream about how he doesn't need parental guidance is just, well, lame.

How Turbo has a 7.3 rating here completely mystifies me. I gave it a 4, and that's more than it really deserves.

By the time Metallica released St. Anger, they had been in decline for some time, but Priest had released two consecutive metal classics before unleashing that particular slice of Limburger.

Had to vote St. Anger, shit on a disc. Other let downs though are Rammstein's Rosenrot, already mentionned above, truly sucked but I felt it coming with Reise Reise. Another big let down was Korn's Untouchables, still listenable but a far cry from their previous work. I did think Come Clarity was a let down when it first came out, but I gave it a few tries and it kinda grew on me, still not as good as other In Flames albums. And last but not least Rob Zombies Educated Horses, extremely average, lacking the energy of his previious work which a really love. Their are also bands that promise to be good with first albums then dtart sucking with their second release: Andrew W.K,, Adema, Ill Nino are just a few. There are more but this is becoming a catalogue so I'll quit.
