Definetely the great father Steve Harris.And Cliff Burton and Billy Sheehan.I really love Sheehan he has a very different style and a real master for music.

John Myung (Dream Theater)

Since bass doesn't catch much attention its very difficult to name bassists, but some are The bassist from Cannibal Corpse(I don't know his name) and steve harris(Iron Maiden)

Steve Harris or Steve DiGiorgio. But I have a little preference for the matchless Steve Harris

Joey Dimaio from Manowar, his basslines arent nessearily difficult or very skilled, but there catchy and heavy as all hell.

Indeed steve DiGiorrgio is one of the finest bass players ive heard to date.
a Very profound crazy but controlled sound.
Played on my fav album Individual thought patterns. and it wouldnt have been the same without him.

Man my love for Joey Dimaios basslines just dropped slightly, most Manowar albums have skullcrushingly heavy bass riffs, but this new album the bass is kind of....well normal which sucks because I know Joey can do much better.

...like on "hell on stage" or the other live album that 12 minute bass solo is boring as fuck but dammit it's so technical.

Cliff Burton, hes the only bassist worth mentioning.

There's too many, but out of all of them, I'd say Roger Patterson. His basslines on Piece of Time are crazy (ie Unholy War).

Stephan Fimmers, his basslines are pretty nuts, Roger Patterson, nice funky thrash lines that fits in with Atheist. Steve Digorgio when he was with Death amazing with his fretless.

Other than that Alex Webster is my Idol

John Myung is an exceptional bassist for DT, he writes and his sound is noticable
Steve DiGiorgio is another bassist who kicks ass. Iv heard him play in a number of very different bands. The man is awesome

Steve Harris without a doubt...amazing skills, both playing and writing

Marco Tapani Hietala - in my oppinion he is making "current" Nightwish (i mean Century Child and Once)...and i love this "current" Nighwish

Steve Harris, the best bassit and composer ever, his solos are great, and the parts of rythm bass are really good too

Why?

He is the most over rated bassist in Metal. Sorry, but Cliff Burton was a decient bass player, at best. His live work is sloppy, and his tone is horrid. The only reason why people think he is good is because he was killed.

Go listen to Jaco Pastorious, Victor Wooten, Les Claypool, Jack Bruce, Tony Levin, Billy Sheehan, John Myung, Chris Squire, John Paul Jones, John Patitucci...heck even Steve Harris is far better than Cliff Burton.
