2011 set big expectations for Megadeth for that year and for 2012. After huge "Big 4" shows, the return of Dave Ellefson and "the kiss and make up" between Dave Mustaine, Lars Ulrich and James Hetfield, finally two of the pioneers of thrash metal, Megadeth and Metallica are together. Certainly Th1rt3en is a great way to show the good vibes they are transmitting since 2010. Read more ›› |

23.10.2011 - 17:20 Written by Angelic Storm on 23.10.2011 at 17:09 I haven't heard the album. But poor lyrics combined to lacking music just enhances the feeling of songs being uninspired, indeed. I don't know... Perhaps, like many other 80s bands, Megadeth are getting too old?

23.10.2011 - 17:40 Written by RavenKing on 23.10.2011 at 17:20 Exactly! Poor lyrics can sometimes be overlooked if the music is great. But if the music is uninspired, then bad lyrics just makes it even worse. Are Megadeth getting too old? I'm not sure, but this album at many points, does seem like it's being played by old men. Even on one of the album's most aggressive moments ("Who's Life Is It Anyway?") it's more of a punky aggression, and more simiplistic than their older thrash stuff. Which isn't necessarily a bad thing... but it does contribute to the feeling that Dave is no longer able to write songs with complex riffs and structures. (ala: "Holy Wars..." or "My Last Words"). So maybe age is a factor There... I might seem as if I'm being overly harsh on the album, but that's only because I know how great Megadeth at their best are, and what they are truly capable of. There is some good stuff on "13", but also amazingly dull and generic songs like "Drugs, Guns, And Money" and "(Home) Wrecker". Even the great melodic hooks shown on the best of their 90's material is mostly abscent, although "Never Dead" has an awesome chorus, which when mixed with some actual aggression (and non-silly lyrics) produces a great song, and one of the album's rare high points. Overall, I don't think any of "Endgame"'s songs were so woefully generic and dull as the worst of "13"'s songs, but there is more songs I really like on "13", so the 2 albums are kinda equal to me...

Just listen the album. Compared to the previous I think this album is way better than Endgame. If I could vote it maybe it would be 8.5. The songs already known, that were leaked, are really amazing, mainly Sudden Death and Never Dead. Both songs are off the charts. Maybe the weakest of them all is Whose Life...Public Enemy No 1 is pretty good with a good solo and great performance by Dave Mustaine. The rest of the album...Fast Lane is a pretty intense song, not very fast, but really strong and intense. New World Order is one of my least favourites of the album, it remindes me The System Has Failed or United Abominations..it´s ok but not Megadeth. Black Swan is an old song of Megadeth from the United Abominations cd, it was remastered and changed "here and there". Wrecker is really good song, very Megadeth reminds me from the Youthanasia album, fast song and lyrics are a real criticism for someone. We The People is a typical song from the United Abominations cd, it's a song about the present situation in America and around the world, it can function as slogan of incentive to the people (We the people is political slogan), technically the drums are the best of this song with Shawn Drover dominationg all the way, although the incentive is there, it is also a dark song. Millennium Blind as a great first 2:40 with a more dramatic pace, after that it continues with a fast pace, with drums playing a great part of the song...the solo is really ok and it fits in the drama of the song. 13 is the most emotionally driven song, mainly Dave Mustaine, it may function as a reminder that Megadeth are here to stay and will go on with greart power, i find really great material in 13 song, way better than The hardest part... of the last album, that was the most dramatic of Endgame. Deadly Nightshade is a heavy song with heavy riff and good solo... it's one of the most agressive songs of "13" in all aspects vocally, in guitar, bass and drums. Guns Drugs & Money don't have a lot to say it's seems to be a filler song. It seems that Dave and the others saw they have time to fill and made this song...it's a good song but not in the pack of the best songs of the album...it's a more generic song that doesn't mean anything in particular, is fast, heavy ... but lacks in feeling. Best Songs: Never Dead, Sudden Death, 13, Wrecker, Public Enemy No1 Ok Songs: "Drugs, Guns, And Money", Millennium Of The Blind, Whose Life..., We The People, Fast Lane and Deadly Nightshade Songs i didn't like: Black Swan (irritates me), New World Order. Vote: 8,5 I think it has better songs and less generic songs than Endgame. This album is much more heavier with greater songs. Never Dead, Sudden Death, Public Enemy No 1 and 13 are really amazing maybe a pack of songs that is one of the best made by Megadeth in this decade. This 4 songs played live must be amazing and have to be present in future setlists (they seem to sound amazing live)

Just listened to a good amount of the record. Right now my opinion is that it is nowhere near as good as Endgame, but it has some key moments like Sudden Death, Neverdead, Whose Life..., Public Enemy #1, Fast Lane, Millennium of the Blind and 13.

24.10.2011 - 05:22 Written by AndMetalForAll on 23.10.2011 at 19:54 Odd ball question, are you an old school Megadeth fan? I listened to the whole album through and its feeling more and more very 7ish. I wasn't a huge Endgame fan but appreciated its intensity. I 100% agree with the previous listener about the song Fast Lane? I immediately gravitated toward figuring, "Ok, this will be intense." Nope. Deadly Nightshade is excellent. Millennium of the Blind and New World Order are Megadeth classics. I think MotB IS indeed a better spin on the original. Drugs, Guns and Lame, We The Lamer, Whose Lame Life..., Fast Lame, Lame Swan, and 13 are just fillers IMO. Very little going on here. Siudden Death and Never Dead are quality Megadeth licks. Btw, Megadeth is my favorite band of all time - I have seen them over a dozen times. Sigh...

24.10.2011 - 12:22 Written by pisymbol on 24.10.2011 at 05:22 I take it you mean me? The thing about "Fast Lane" is it actually starts off great, with the lead guitar sounding a police siren, which instantly reminded me of "502". Then after such a great build up... it goes into a mundane, and generic mid paced riff, which totally kills off any momentum created by the start of the song. Had the whole song (after the buildup) been similar to the last 30 seconds, it would have been an awesome Megadeth song, instead of the damp squib it actually is... Totally agreed about "Millennium Of The Blind" and "New World Order" being classics. The latter song should actually have been on CTE or "Youthanasia" as it was always worthy of being a proper album track. And hearing the former demo finally fleshed out into a finished form, is amazing! xD "Drugs, Guns, And Money" might just be the most dull and generic song Dave has ever came up with... "We The People" isn't that bad, but it's hardly great stuff either. I actually love "Black Swan", even though I think the version on "13" is inferior to the version that was a pre order bonus for "United Abominations". I really like "Whose Life..." even if the riffing is rather straightforward. The title track is a total anti climax. I kept thinking while I was listening to it, that it was building up to something really dramatic, but the build up turned out to be the whole song, which was disappointing. I agree with you again on "Deadly Nightshade". Rather like "Black Curtains" from "Youthanasia", it's a mid paced song that sounds genuinely menacing. "Sudden Death" suffers from the overload of solos for it's own sake that was a problem with many of "Endgame"'s songs, (originally it had less solos, but more were added, because the makers of Guitar Hero asked Dave to put more solos in it. lol) but it's still a pretty great song regardless of that. And "Never Dead" is a great song. I didn't think much to "Public Enemy No.1" when I first heard it, but hearing some of the really dull, monotonous tracks that are on the album, made me re-evaluate it. And it is actually a pretty good song! "Wrecker" has a decent homage-to-AC/DC main riff, and I also like the solo, but the ridiculous lyrics bring the song down a bit for me...

24.10.2011 - 14:42 Rating: 7 Written by pisymbol on 24.10.2011 at 05:22 Yes i'm a oldschool fan of Megadeth. But we have to see things in reality, nowadays thrash metal isn't the same. It´s rare to see good heavy metal. Only few albums like make good name to the heavy metal industry. Megadeth and Metallica are in a good way with ok albums and a lot of fans behind them. But everyone knows that the quality of their suck compared with the good old days. I really think this album is better than the previous album. There is more intensity and way more songs to be played live. The previous one has maybe HeadCrusher and 1320 (1320 is way exagerated...the guitar riffs are completely exagerated to the song and concept that is supposed to have) both songs are good to be played live. "13" has never dead, sudden death, 13, whose life ( that is a bit melodic..but a cool song) and even fast lane that is heavy, not fast but heavy and intense. I respect your opinion about this album...but i really think this has more potential than the previous. Mainly because the times we live. Thrash Metal, almost doesn´t existe nowadays, maybe the Ironbound, The Blackening, Formation Of Damnation tried to bring the oldschool thrash metal. So to listen "13" it's a good experience from a band that suffer what they suffered, with the change of personnel, bad albums and lack of personality. In my opinion Megadeth is improving. Right, now down. No, no, keep going. Under charts. 2011. Plenty of FANTASTIC metal. Thrash....let's see of the top of my head for this year: Revocation - Chaos of Forms Sylosis - Edge of Earth Skeletonwitch - Forever Abomination Absu - Abzu All high quality thrash. And now we put Megadeth's latest next to it. If you haven't heard those albums, go listen to them and come back and play Thirteen. Now see what I mean? Let me get my hard copy, spin it a few more times and maybe Thirteen will grow on me. Like you, I thought Endgame was totally overrated. But it IS intense and shows the fire is still somewhat burning (good thing). The riffage on a lot of the songs on Thirteen still feel very generic. But hey, its better than Lulu....I'm just saying... :-)

24.10.2011 - 17:33 Written by pisymbol on 24.10.2011 at 16:53 That's hardly a glowing recommendation for any album is it? Is "13" better than "Endgame"? I ask myself. I'm still not entirely sure about that... "13" has more genuinely great tracks, whereas "Endgame" is more consistently solid, as it contains no really bad tracks unlike "13". "13" has two more tracks on it though, and if you take away the two worst songs, I think "13" is a better album overall. They've still failed to build on the immense promise shown by "The System Has Failed" that maybe Megadeth still had one classic album left in them. And while "13" far from meets that promise, it's still a good album, with the ocassional gem on offer too! xD

24.10.2011 - 17:51 Written by Angelic Storm on 24.10.2011 at 17:33 That is THE question isn't it. Or more importantly (to me at least), is "13" a step in the right direction? We are of one mind when it comes to Megadeth it seems: When "The System Has Failed" came out I was extremely optimistic about Megadeth's future. I thought to myself, wow, he does have one classic album left in him and this IS the musical bridge to achieve it. Unfortunately, I was so far, very, VERY wrong. Again, I need a hard copy of "13" on my setup, spin it a few times, internalize, accept, and review.

24.10.2011 - 18:08 Written by pisymbol on 24.10.2011 at 17:51 I think what makes that question even harder to answer, is that 1 of "13"'s best songs is an old song that wasn't considered good enough for inclusion on the early-mid 90's albums. (although I personally think it was good enough). And another of it's best songs originated as a demo from the same time period. As for "The System Has Failed", I can only agree. Had it not been for a couple of niggling flaws, that album itself could have been a classic. But while it wasn't quite a classic, it was an indicator that Dave was very close to regaining what Megadeth had lost for so many years. Unfortunately, the subsequent 2 albums failed to build on the immense promise shown by TSHF, which left me very disappointed, even if neither album was actually bad. I will listen to "13" some more before giving a definitive rating to it, but I will say if it is an improvement on "Endgame", it's not by much. And it will take a significant improvement, if Dave is to release that one last classic album that TSHF seemed to indicate that he still had left in him. *sighs*

I've listened through the album about 3 times now. I'm going to wait a little later for a real sum-up, because I can tell from those listens that a good half of the album is more 'grower' than full blown good or bad. Some songs were great, others were OK but some just passed me by on first listen but now have more of a presence to me on the third. It's not a good as Endgame by any means but I don't think I can write it off as a 'bad' Megadeth album yet either. I was certainly surprised at the changes of existing songs, especially 'Sudden Death'. I thought they were just going to include the GH Single version (which they've pulled off before in the past *cough*Dread and the Fugitive Mind*cough*), but instead they've either remixed or re-recorded it to fit better on the album. The new versions of the 'old demo songs' song great too. 'Millenium of the Blind' sounds totally different! However not sure about the new 'Black Swan' though...

Megadeth's recent albums are not that THSF and UA are ok albums...they're not entirely bad...we must agree that with the recent era of music of heavy metal... Classic albums almost don't exist. I believe Endgame is way exagerated and overrated, certain songs aare cleary only an effort to be better than Metallica's Death Magnetic, just look This Day We fight or 1320...omg so many solos in 3 or 4 minutes songs...only headcrusher is very good and transpires a little bit of the megadeth spirit. "13" is better and the best album of the decade of Megadeth greets, AndMetalForAll

I am so frustrated with the drumming on this album. No joke, Shawn Drover dragged Megadeth down hardcore. The end of Fast Lane should've been the whole song. I don't understand why it wasn't. New World Order was really, really good, ESPECIALLY the end. But, honestly, what really drags this album down is the fact that most of the songs are mid-tempo. Sure, it's cool to have a few mid-temp songs on the album, but for the whole thing to be comprised of mostly mid-tempo songs, that leaves much to be desired. Especially next to songs like Never Dead, which is really what Megadeth is supposed to be. Dave wanted Megadeth to be the heaviest, most technical, and fastest band out there. But, now they barely play fast songs? I don't like. I was really anticipating 13. I'm a huge Megadeth fan; have been since the 6th grade. They were my first metal band. The album is not horrible, but, it's just not the Megadeth that I love. :/ Oh well~ Also, Dave, seriously, FIRE SHAWN DROVER.

25.10.2011 - 11:07 Written by pisymbol on 25.10.2011 at 03:18 I think so too. TSHF is definitely a great album, and easily Megadeth's most underrated. I can only agree with the mid-tempo comment... "Youthanasia" is a classic example of that. Individually, the songs are all amazing. But because all of the songs are mid-paced, as a whole album, it tends to drag a bit, and feels a bit lacking in variety.

25.10.2011 - 15:16 Written by pisymbol on 25.10.2011 at 14:04 That's very true, they are! There's not a single bad song on "Youthanasia", they're all great. The lack of variety in the pacing of the songs is the only negative point about the album. Funnily enough, had "New World Order" been put on the album, (and it could have been, as it's been around since the CTE recording sessions) it might have helped a bit in that regard. It's thrashy end section would have broken the mid-paced monopoly for a short time.

26.10.2011 - 00:47 Written by AndMetalForAll on 26.10.2011 at 00:29 I'd personally give it a 9, but that's just me of course. I don't know what you mean by "Mustaine looks like a girl", but that isn't a valid reason for saying a song is bad! As for those songs themselves, "Die Dead Enough" wonderfully blends Megadeth's more streamlined and melodic 90's style, with the macabre edge that their 80's material had, and it sounds awesome as a result. "Truth Be Told" is a fantastic song! It simmers for just the perfect amount of time, before taking off like a freight train for the final part of the song. It's a brilliantly arranged track. "Blackmail The Universe" might lack a bit in speed, but certainly isn't lacking in tension, and sounds like a twin song to "Holy Wars..." The end section of the song that ends with "all along only... another region of hell..." sends shivers through me the exact same way as the "next thing you know, they'll take my thoughts away..." end part of "Holy Wars" did. The only things I don't like about the album are: The whiny, hypocritical lyrics to "Something I'm Not" (which is a great song musically), Chris Poland's solo in "Of Mice And Men" being waaay too short, and "My Kingdom" is a bit of a dull album closer. Those things aside, it's a great Megadeth album, and certainly better than the 3 albums that followed it. At least IMO. I do think "13" does just top the previous two albums though. Even though it's worst songs are worse than anything on those 2 albums. (if you don't count the abominable re-recording of "A Tout Le Monde") But the amount of truly great material is just a touch higher. It doesn't top TSHF for me, but I think it is a very slight step back in the right direction. xD
