Looking at the album in isolation .. I think its mediocre. Looking at it in the context of Metallica I think its disappointing

It's not a bad album at all i think. It is certainly an improvement over the last 15 years of music they have come out with. Some song I felt were amongst Metallica's best work while others were very mediocre attempts. Overall I found the lyrics very disappointing but the music in all i found quite enjoyable. In comparison to Metallica's early works say MOP, some songs measure up very nicely in comparison, That was just your life, cyanide, all nightmare long, broken beat & scarred i think are songs that can hold their own against the early works of Metallica.

I still haven't listened to it yet, but they have been playing the shit out of one of the songs on the radio around here, I'm getting a bit tired of it already.

Make up your own mind, I like a few songs from the album, but its not brilliant nor is it bad by any means. I'm just not sure what I really think of the album yet. I going to sit on the fence I think as too my judgement as a whole of the album as their are also some fairly average songs.

It's one thing to love metallica's post-80's albums. it's another to overzealously refuse to admit any flaw in their post "...And Justice" work and to take anyone else's criticism of such as a personal attack.
if you can accept there are people who irrationally hate metallica altogether (it's doubleplus hilarious when the metallihater is a megadeth fan), there are people who deify them and refuse to admit any imperfections in their music, and then somewhere in the middle a bunch of people who are capable of simultaneously liking and criticizing a band, you will be fine.
if you take one of the two extremes, however, there will undoubtedly be people who (rightfully) call you out.

There were people that were calling their first couple albums a little rough...and then they moved onto more "progressive" and "instrumental" territory and then there was ...AJFA that lacked: bass, a soul, Cliff, a lot of other things...and then after that well...forget about it right? And then there was St. Anger you can REALLY forget about it am I right? Or am I right?
But yeah, Death Magnetic TO ME anyway would've been like if Metallica had all the money they had now back in 1983 and were older and more mature and putting out a thrash album is all...BUT then there's that whole Kreator argument about how they sound a lot more hardcore and trashier and Pettroza is older than Hetfield and blah blah blah...and Hordes of Chaos to me sounds better than Death Magnetic and I like Kreator a a whole hell of a lot more than Metallica anyway...

I think of it this way :
Kill ' em All - Justice : Legendary
Black album & DM : Good
Load & Reload : weird?
St. Anger : pretty bad (okay, really bad)
I saw em in Antwerp a while ago and I must say they played alot of new stuff and it was really a great gig.
I hadn't seen Metallica in such a form since pre St. Anger.
I guess my point is they're still a fantastic band live.
Great songs on this album are :
That Was Just Your Life
Broken, Beat & Scarred
All Nightmare Long
The Judas Kiss
Suicide & Redemption
My Apocalypse
Cyanide, The Day That Never Comes & The End of The Line are okay.
The only song I really don't like is Unforgiven III.

For me, my favorite album from Metallica is Load. I have all of their 80's material on vinyl, including the two EPs and still don't enjoy them that much.

I didn't like it at first.
The day that never comes used to be the song that woke me up ( at 5:30), which was a mistake, hearing it was pretty annoying and I just wanted to throw the cellphone against the wall (I didn't )
Other songs...hm ... are not so bad, I know I'd like them if I listened to it over and over again
guess I have nothing to relate to while listening to it...

There are actually 4 ep's from the 80s...
Whiplash, Jump In The Fire, Creeping Death, and Garage Days Re-Revisited
12" single = ep

Can't say I really liked the album. Over the last few years, I've grown a STRONG distaste for James's vocals. I have no idea why, because it never used to bother me... Nothing else really did it for me on the album, either.

Although over the years james has improved immensely as a vocalist they have started to annoy me more and more.

To be completely honest, I don't think it's all their fault to why I think that they have a REALLY irritating stale sound... I think, being a very influential band as they are, a lot of metal bands sound just like Metallica. So it's like I'm listening to them when I'm really not. It's weird though, because I could say the same thing about Maiden... but they haven't started to annoy me... yet.

They already started to annoy me immensely with Somewhere IN Time, then redeemed themselves a bit with 7th Son, but then really pisssed me off with all their subsequent album.

Well, the age difference really comes into play here. I wasn't even BORN when that album was released... And actually, I like that album. It was one of the last albums I heard by them... That was like 7 years ago though. Naturally, I have only experienced the Maiden time line from Brave New World to now.

It's an alright album compared to stuff like Load, Reload or Saint Anger and it's probably the one that sounds slightly like the good old days. But in the end, it's a far cry from anything prior to the Black Album. I think they're trying their best to produce something of the standard they used to but I honestly think they are past it. Although, I do appreciate a few songs, or riffs, on the album, I can't see myself buying it. What's the point if it's gonna stay in a pile collecting dust with Saint Anger. If I want to listen to Metallica, I'm guaranteed to go for Ride or Master in any case.

This album....is absolute shit. It lacks everything a good metal album needs. When I first heard that they were going to release a new album I said to myself "It couldn't get worse than St. Anger" but I was wrong. This is by far the worst Metallica album in the the history of Metallica. The should just give up and quit. they have nothing good left in them. And they are by far the most over rated band in the world. I absolutly truely, am revolted by this album and anyone who calls it metal. For it is not.
