A simple question. what genre or style of metal have you been listening too lately? And what band spurred it?

does this topic exist already? I guess I'll find out

In the last month my taste has gone full circle from Thrash -> Death -> Progressive -> Black -> Heavy/Power -> Thrash -> Black/Death - > and finally back to Power Metal I can't really say what started it, but it has bee a random few weeks of music on my mp3 player.
With the most played songs being:
Everytime it Rains - Primal Fear (8)
Soul Society - Kamelot (8)
Equilibrium - tristania (7)
Harbinger of Fate - Iced Earth (7)
Empty - Emperor (7)
Damned in Black - Immortal (7)
Slowly We Rot - Obituary (7)
Hook In Mouth - Megadeth (7)
Ghost of Predition - Opeth (7)

Slightly Random don't you think?

I've just started listening to a lot of Opeth, Agalloch, and Katatonia lately. I'm not sure exactly what they have in common, but it feels like something is there. I think I'm just outside the edge of getting into doom metal.

I've been enjoying doom metal lately. I think that the atmosphere in bands such as Agalloch and Virgin Black got me interested in digging deeper into the genre.

I've been listening to a lot of Seventh Wonder, Pagan's Mind, and Dream Theater. So maybe that means progressive metal? I don't know many bands in that genre, but I'd love to find more.

Well, outta nowhere sometime last month i was screwing around on the internet looking up russian metal bands. I found Master, its spelled in russian though. Its a pretty great thrash band, so it kind of made me start listening to thrash a lot. Been looking at some of the more old school ones like Vio-Lence and Overkill.

Because of listening to Ensiferum I've been listening to folk metal lately. I am currently looking for more to listen to though, so if anybody has any suggestions let me know.

Same, Korpiklaani is what got me into folk metal (and its fun to listen to when your drunk) but i found out alot of folk metal bands get alittle cheesy with it. You should let me know of somemore. Ensiferum is pretty good.

Turisas and Ensiferum, IMO, are above other folk metal bands, hihi.

Lately I'm listening to crap.
If talking about metal, my bf somehow got me used to Avantasia's song "The Toy Master" and I got their last album so, now I find it pretty cute. But that's not the genre I'm lately into... now I'm returning to Orphaned Land again. ^___^

I have been into power and prog metal lately. Dream Theater and Pink Floyd started me on prog. Bands I have liked for a long time got me into Power, bands like Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Dio/Sabbath aka Heaven and hell, Dio, Rainbow, and Yngwie Malmsteen. All of them have elements of power metal. Then I got into Symphony X which is a nice mix of Prog and Power metal, and a little Queensryche. I recently got some albums by Blind Guardian, Iced Earth, and Kamelot. Their albums are hard to find in my area, but sometimes I find em. I dont know many people who like power metal, or prog beyond Pink Floyd, so suggestions are hard to come by, thats why we got Metal Storm I guess.

When I first started listening to metal it was all because of Black Sabbath. My dad had the original self-titled release on vinyl from when he was a kid. One day I found it tucked away in a closet among his other records and said "Put this in. I've already heard all of your Hendrix and Jethro Tull." It was awesome. Lol. I then got into heavier and heavier music, and really diversified my taste over the years.

Heavy Metal- Pantera/ Alice In Chains/ Metallica
Death Metal- Kataklysm/ Nile
Power/ Thrash Metal- Iced Earth/ Testament
Folk Metal- Eluveitie (technically it was Jethro Tull, but I wouldn't call them a metal band)
Melodic Death- Dark Tranquillity/ The Haunted
Progressive- Tool/ Symphony X
Black Metal- Dragonlord
Pagan/ Viking Metal- Amon Amarth
Stoner- Clutch/ Alabama Thunderpussy/ High On Fire

*I know the original post said "lately" but honestly I switch up CDs a few times a day. I pretty much never stop listening to music.
