A new favorite: Frank Bello
His basslines just carry the entire Anthrax discog, especially the old albums like Spreading The Disease or Among The Living, when the music was so....sloppy isnt the word, but almost as if the music is on the verge of falling apart, it made it sound sooo good.

But you have to love Cliff Burton (RIP) and good ol' Glen Benton

Why?

He is the most over rated bassist in Metal. Sorry, but Cliff Burton was a decient bass player, at best. His live work is sloppy, and his tone is horrid. The only reason why people think he is good is because he was killed.

Go listen to Jaco Pastorious, Victor Wooten, Les Claypool, Jack Bruce, Tony Levin, Billy Sheehan, John Myung, Chris Squire, John Paul Jones, John Patitucci...heck even Steve Harris is far better than Cliff Burton.

yeah, you forgot Michael Manring hes great

Yeah I like Greg Christian too. On the live in london DVD the bass intro for Souls of Black sounds exactly the same as the record, even the tone is perfect.

My favourite at the moment is B.War who was the bassist for Marduk up until thier last 2 albums. He always played interesting bass lines that help make the songs a bit different to other straight forward BM bands.

I'm also noticing that a lot of the best bass players (or certainly peoples favourites) use fingerstyle instead of a pick...

It's so sad just a few people have listened to Sawada Taiji work on X Japan, his bass was the first bass I've ever heard which had something different than copying the guitar notes. Awesome, also Cliff and Markus Groskpoff (whatever it writes) are great.
EDIT: Sorry for forgetting tom fucking araya and angelripper.

How about Eric Langlois of Cryptopsy? He is just killer on "None So Vile",I like that all of his notes are easy to make out, listen to his work on the tracks "Benedictine Convulsions","Orgiastic Disembowelment" and "Slit Your Guts ".He actually gets his own solos, how ever short the may be.

I can't believe I forgot about this guy! I've just started listening to Cryptopsy again and his bass playing really makes None So Vile the masterpiece that it is. That solo on "Slit Your Guts" really is something special. Lots of different techniques used and the great production really helps his playing stand out.

hm well the guy from testament is cool, i also love geezer butler, he just rules, plus that guy out of primus, though i cant rember his name.

on another note, Somebody is reconising bassists! I belive bassists dont get enough credit for what they do, most of the time the musics all aboutt he guitars or the singing, theres only a handfull of famous and good bassists compared to guitarists.
