The only metal I've ever showed to any girl was Sonata Arctica and some Gamma Ray stuff. They said it " ok, but kind of noisy". I remember when I just gave this girl an Insomnium CD, she just told me it was pointless noise, I was sooooo pissed off. I think metal is something you have to get yourself into for you to really like it. It requires listening to it by yourself, and grasping the meaning. Its not like other genres, where you can have it in the background whilst watching TV, or playing sports (ok, maybe some thrash, death, and power choruses maybe). Generally metal requires more attention than most other forms of popular music. I also use "popular" lightly, because most people are not into a form of metal, althernative metal maybe, but, thats where it usually stops.

Pointless, how so, their music is really meaningful, about you know, love and hate and that kind of stuff. Or, do you mean pointless as in pointless to show the people that band?

Written by Piro on 26.12.2007 at 15:11 Well, I am totally not aan Insomnium fan at all. I find their music (not their lyrics never checked those out for I don't care about lyrics) totally pointless making the sort of music that has been done a million time before without adding anything to it and sounding overproduced and all witht ehir melodic death sound and all. But then again Insomnium are a personal hagn-up of mine just as Swallow The SUn.

Well, you should read the lyrics, they are really the most important part of Inosmnium I would say. Anyway, what do you mean its been done before, I've never heard a band that sounds anything like Insomnium, the closest I ever got was Noumena, or maybe some of Dark Tranquility's older slower songs. I find them extremely unique personally.

I can personally say that metal was, in a way, a phase for me. There was a time between perhaps ages 13-17 that I hardly listened to anything else. It was all "Metal is the best and only real music, passionate and honest, down with anything light or soft!" and all that crap. I'm sure many of you have been there, still are, or know people (on these boards, if not else) who're like that. And I was perfectly content with the attitude. Then I grew up, and I'm happy I did. I grew out of the fanatic worship of the genre and the whole scene. Some say metal is the best even at its worst, but I must say I can no longer stand metal even if it's average or below that. I just find it an utter bore. I've begun listening to more and more bands, artists and composers who aren't metal at all, and I can't help but wonder what I was thinking during my "metal years." That said, metal itself was not just a phase. I'm not over it. Many of my favorite bands are still metal, and metal CDs make up the bulk of my playlist. It's just not the "one and only" for me anymore. Stuff like the Cardigans, Tori Amos, several game music composers and classical composers as well as J-Rock/Pop have really stolen my heart. And I'm really happy for that. I can't imagine not having ever heard Super Extra Gravity by the Cardigans or Malice Mizer's Merveilles. My metal enthusiasm certainly was a phase, and I do think it can be attributed to a certain age, level maturity and state of mind. It's not just metal, though, but anything; it's perfectly human to become extremely dedicated and excited about something to the point of blind elitism, because it's "your own thing." Usually, that's something that passes, but appreciation for the finer moments of the metal genre doesn't seem like a matter of age. I doubt I'll ever stop getting chills from MDB's Angel and the Dark River, Kamelot's Epica, Katationia's Last Fair Deal or Emperor's Nightside Eclipse.

Theres more to life than just music. Music is a big thing no doubt, it allows self expression and channeling of your thoughts etc... but its not everything. Besides, what kind of relationship would it be if you agreed on everything. People need to be theirselves, and not just follow what everyone tells them to do. What's the point of life if not going for what you like. Just because you disagree on music, doesn't mean you cannot be friends. Just look at most of my friends. Most are into some forms of rock, but metal is just eww for them, yet we are all still good friends. Another good way to avoid conflict here is simply use earphones/headsets. When my parents started complaining about that "Satanic Noise(funny part was, this was Hammerfall they were talking about) I simply bought a cheap pair of headphones and that's how I listen to music now.

28.12.2007 - 14:14 Written by Piro on 28.12.2007 at 13:58 It happens quite often when it comes to metal, believ it or not. I have seen it happen around me quite a few times. And out of love for their wife (or husband) the partner is quite often even willing to live with such nonsense and willing to endure the other's taste in music instead.

If metal is supposed to be a growing-up phase I was a little late to begin with, I started to listen more seriously to metal as an adult about 6-7 years ago. Instead I tend to regard the "alternative rock" I listened to before as a teenage phase now. There are a lot of older people listening to hard-rock/metal - I certainly noticed that at some concerts and at the "Sweden rock" metal festival where the average age seemed to be over thirty. Any kind of music can be a phase and sometimes people change any kind of interests for some reason, especially when they're young. I don't think I will change music taste to radically again after this age, and it seems like I've gotten used to a certain heaviness in music. I really try to be open minded and listen to other kinds of music but most of it just doesen't interest me in the same way. And a relationship with different music tastes won't change anything cause I'm already in one that has worked wery well with earphones.

even though metal might seem like a hard genre of music to get into, i dont think it is, because there is so much variety to it. some metal is not heavy at all. either way im happy i picked up the number of the beast (first metal cd), i dont think its a phase, because ive liked metal for a long time and i dont think why i would just stop liking it all of a sudden

I don't think that metal is just a phase, in fact, i believe that that is exactly what makes a difference between metal and other music, or better said, by witch metal is special. Before metal i listened a lot different music, and that were phases. they all lasted half of year/year. (i think that the longest for me was rap phase ) But when i started listen to metal, it wasn't like that. I simple couldn't (and i still can't) listen to any other music. It just isn't the same feeling. That's why i think that no one who ever truly loved metal, can't after some time say "i don't like it anymore, it was just a phase for me ", like i can now say for rap.

28.12.2007 - 21:17 Written by [user id=948] on 28.12.2007 at 14:22 This is especially true. To be honest, I don't think you should talk about "metal" and "other music" as different phenomena. There's nothing that makes metal different to other music in and of itself. However, metal does have a strong subculture around it, which is why its fans often identify themselves strongly with the "metalhead community" and like to seperate themselves from the mainstream. A phenomenon not unique to metal, mind you. I believe that oftentimes the kind of metal enthusiasm, obsession even, that many fans show can be attributed to a combination of love for music, rebellion and desire to find something to belong to. Metalheads accept eachother, they're like a family outside the normal society, or that's how I bet many metalheads feel. The kind of connection you can feel within the crowd on metal concerts is probably a very strong experience for youngsters searching for their place and identity. This is a gross generalization, I know, but I do think it's true more often than not. There's nothing in the music itself that sets metal apart as a "phase", or as "superior art" for that matter. What's characteristic to metal is the strong, visible subculture and everything that goes along with it; attitudes, looks, sometimes even political and religious opinions. Whether or not you recognize its effect on you, or if you even identify yourself with the subculture, you can't deny that metal has a lot more related to it than just music. Much moreso than many other styles of music, though it's certainly not the only one of its kind.

I hate it when people call me a goth just coz i lsiten to metal. Its just really stupid. it really pisses me off. Sometimes people are turned off me because of my music tastes so i never really had many friends at school coz they just thought i was weird. also some teacher called me a 'dark horse' once and they wanted to listen to what i saw listening to while my school was on an excursion and they said they couldnt hear any music and it was just a bunch of noise and they ask me why do i like that 'rubbish' and so on. Its just really retarded the way people have to comment like that, i mean it is their opinion on the music genre but they dont have to say things like "why dont you listen to some proper music?" when metal is proper music to start off with, which is why i like it so much. EDIT: i dont know if that made sense but anyway
