These Are bands like KoRn, Slipknot, Kittie, they give a bad name to metal everywhere. Plus the majority of their fans are Ostrasized social Outcasts who can't fit in anywhere so they further Ostrasize themselves and start listening to this Bullshit and telling themselves their individuals because of it, when in all truth they themselves probably never even liked the music to Begin with, In other words, POSERS. So if your wondering why Nu metal is so unpopular on this site it's because no self respecting fan would bow down to this Bullshit, that most(not all) nu metal Bands are quite Deserving of their bad rep.

Once people get that through their heads, they might approach the genre with an open mind, rather than a closed one.

But I suppose that is too much to ask...

Well, I get your point though. And you actually made a very good answer to the point of discussion we made in System of A Down thread.

And I still like Nu Metal, because it's like any other genre, it has it's own sound, it has good bands, it has lousy bands and it has bands noone ever heard of. However, Nu Metal has it's own sound, just as any other metal genre and I really don't understand why the word ''mainstream'' is important here. As I had emphasized so many times, yes it is true that nu metal is widely popularized, but again, it's not to judge bands and music itself by the mass of listeners. If you hate the music because of what it is, then that's smth I respect. As you mentioned nu metal being blasphemous to Iron Maiden.... For example, I hate Iron Maiden. I have heard all their albums, I know people who love them and tried to get me into their music, but I just hate the guitars, I generally hate heavy metal sound, and especially the vocals. But OK, Iron Maiden is widely popular band and were once also a step forward for metal music and I respect the fact. I am not totally against Alternative and Nu-Metal like alot of my friends are.

Yes, I like Slayer and Motorhead, but I also enjoy Slipknot and Korn, and Red Hot Chilli Peppers.

What I hate, is how often I get flamed and bugged about how I enjoy all kinds of music from Thrash to bands like Steppenwolf and Pink Floyd, and to Nirvana. If only in general there was more openess to music diversity...

But what i'm seeing a lot in this thread is the confusion about Alternative Metal with crappy nu-metal :| I find this to be very anoying cuz many users came here to talk about Alternative Metal, and they end up talking about slipknot and korn just cuz they're popular (and bad). What about the other hundred of bands that are out there? have you give them a try? they are also good musicians like those from heavy, power, death or any kind of metal band that you "respect". Let me put it this way: can't you tell me a bad band of black metal? i can. can't you tell me a bad band of death metal? i can.

All this to say that you can't "filter" all the Alternative genre to the worst bands that are out there, and generalize starting from them :\

Btw, my fav band is from Alternative metal - Mudvayne - so I, and the staff from the site, respect that and that is the reason why there is a seccion about this genre where in fact we are having this discussion right now.

I've mentioned this same thing earlier before in another thread. You don't see a dozen styles of country music. Metal is the only genre that does this, and it is pretty sad.

Well, there is... honky tonk, bakersfield, bluegrass, country folk, close harmony, lubbock, nashville, neotraditional country, outlaw country, red dirt, texas country etc.

But you guys are right about one thing, I honestly dont know a lot of country fans who give a rats ass about these categories.

I am firmly of the belief that perhaps if we continuously drive the same points home again and again and again and again they will eventually stick.

There are posers everywhere, in every social gathering, so yeah, true Metal
And Nu Metal Are no different. But I pointed out that there are people on all
walks of life that have their likes and dislikes. I'm not saying just because you
listen to Nu metal that that makes you fake, and I'm not saying that just
because you listen to other types of metal that your true. I'm By no means
an elitist, but I hate Fake people, and most Nu Metal Fans I know are fake,

I haven't read much of a topic.... But this is a bit like "true" and "fake" metal, most likely there are lots of people here who are fans of old 'original' bands, and see alternatives as a side effect.

I think it has to do a lot with Metalheads trying to have an image about them.

For me, I don't really care. If I like it, I listen to it. I mean, Killswitch Engage is one of my favorite bands. Heck, their album End of Heartache made my top 10 all time favorite list, along with Images and Words, Blackwater Park, Rabbit Songs and Remedy Lane.

As far as Nu-Metal goes, I prefer listening to Korn or Static-X during work than Katatonia or Dream Theater. I can't really swing a hammer to "Anna Lee", but I sure can to "Here to Stay".

To answer the question:
Because it's ALTERNATIVE. Unlike the media describing popular bands like Radiohead, MS is correct in labelling this stuff "alternative". Case closed.

It shouldn't even matter what something is labeled. So what I do is just listen to what I like and call it done. I don't care if its the nu-wave of progressive black ambient technical power death thrash-core. I just listen and do a little dance....

I'm going to guess and say that alternative metal simply does not appeal to everyone. A lot of people, not just on this forum but in general, assume that alternative metal is the more "mainstream" side of metal, which is just blindly ignorant in my opinion. While "nu-metal" does fall under the category of alternative metal, the genre expands much further than just that one particular style.

Furthermore, the avant-garde style of music does not appeal to everyone, which is suggested by it's definition. It's moving away from what is considered to be the normal. Some people will embrace it, others will not. After all you can't blame anyone from disliking a certain genre, unless of course they have a very childish and immature excuse as to why they dislike it.

100 different people, 100 different tastes, of which (on average) 90 like something that's not alternative metal. Topics here are dictated by members, not by quality, or anything else. A member comes, starts a topic, and people respond to it, but it's up to them to decide where they'll post or not.

I'm not a great fan of Alternative Metal because I just don't think it inspires me as much as the other genres. Also, Korn is an Alternative band...

and the greased up, loincloth sporting Manowar are "metal" - good thing I didn't judge all metal based on them, eh? Otherwise, after hearing "Blow your speakers" I never would have ever picked up any metal tape or cd ever again.

i swear each visit to this thread to read some of the responses leaves me feeling "dumber" than before I clicked the link.
