And not just metal listeners, also music producers, critics, musicans themselves. I daresay there are bands who refuse to call themselves nu or whatever because of the negtivity this label brings. Also the spelling of the term nu IMO has a pejorative meaning. And one more thing - have you ever noticed as many of negative and meaningless comments as in alternative forum? I mean, I don't go bithcing around if I don't like a band, like for example in the Nightwish thread. All you see here is ''oh man this is crap''. d00h. On basics of what? I seriously don't understand this phenomena.... What's up with the narrow-mindenessness? I mean, nu metal is just a step forward in metal music, just as hard rock was a pre-step for metal, so I really don't understand why MS refuses to add such bands. It's a part of musical evolution, whether you like it or not. So far we've only got Killswith Engage, Deftones and Static-X of these kind here.

I will say that there are some "alternitive Metal" Bands that are quite Talented, Such as Tool, But Most of the time, When I hear "Nu Metal", I think of bands absolutly shit for musical talent that are only famous because they followed a trend and won a popularity contest. These Are bands like KoRn, Slipknot, Kittie, they give a bad name to metal everywhere. Plus the majority of their fans are Ostrasized social Outcasts who can't fit in anywhere so they further Ostrasize themselves and start listening to this Bullshit and telling themselves their individuals because of it, when in all truth they themselves probably never even liked the music to Begin with, In other words, POSERS. So if your wondering why Nu metal is so unpopular on this site it's because no self respecting fan would bow down to this Bullshit, that most(not all) nu metal Bands are quite Deserving of their bad rep.

15.08.2006 - 02:37 Written by Arian Totalis on 15.08.2006 at 02:08 This thread is about Alternative Metal - a phrase you use once before diverging into an anti-Nu Metal rant. Please understand that Nu Metal does in no way compose the entirety of Alternative Metal. In fact, it's a very small part of the many subgenres. Once people get that through their heads, they might approach the genre with an open mind, rather than a closed one. But I suppose that is too much to ask...

22.08.2006 - 12:44 Written by [user id=823] on 21.08.2006 at 21:31 Well, I get your point though. And you actually made a very good answer to the point of discussion we made in System of A Down thread. And I still like Nu Metal, because it's like any other genre, it has it's own sound, it has good bands, it has lousy bands and it has bands noone ever heard of. However, Nu Metal has it's own sound, just as any other metal genre and I really don't understand why the word ''mainstream'' is important here. As I had emphasized so many times, yes it is true that nu metal is widely popularized, but again, it's not to judge bands and music itself by the mass of listeners. If you hate the music because of what it is, then that's smth I respect. As you mentioned nu metal being blasphemous to Iron Maiden.... For example, I hate Iron Maiden. I have heard all their albums, I know people who love them and tried to get me into their music, but I just hate the guitars, I generally hate heavy metal sound, and especially the vocals. But OK, Iron Maiden is widely popular band and were once also a step forward for metal music and I respect the fact. And by this I don't by any meaning try to compare what nu metal bands do for metal to Iron Maiden, simply because it's impossible and yes, no matter how much I despise them, I do acknowledge the fact they were very importnat in metal music evolution. And then, there is also the thing of being metal head, isn't it. I have been listening to metal for years now, but I am still not a metal head and I won't give my life for metal or anything bla bla, I'm just a person who likes metal and besides metal I also listen to a lot of other genres. Because I simply don't feel the need to be respected as a tr00 metalhead and because I'm opened towards any music that I consider good, alternative or mainstream, I don't care. I'm here for the music, not for the attitude.

I mean people just do not want to admit that they listen nu metal because it has that negative label. And they all say that true metal listeners would never listen to that kind of music. This people are metal posers who think that you have to wear black shirts all the time and listen to I do not know kind of metal as far as it is not nu metal. And people who are really into metal would never say this-well this are my experiences.Personally I like few nu metal bands and as far as I like lyrics and sound I do not care what kind of metal it is.

I am not totally against Alternative and Nu-Metal like alot of my friends are. Yes, I like Slayer and Motorhead, but I also enjoy Slipknot and Korn, and Red Hot Chilli Peppers. What I hate, is how often I get flamed and bugged about how I enjoy all kinds of music from Thrash to bands like Steppenwolf and Pink Floyd, and to Nirvana. If only in general there was more openess to music diversity... A metalhead I may be, but a music fan I am more.

24.08.2006 - 21:08 Written by [user id=2084] on 23.08.2006 at 21:10 Agree. But what i'm seeing a lot in this thread is the confusion about Alternative Metal with crappy nu-metal :| I find this to be very anoying cuz many users came here to talk about Alternative Metal, and they end up talking about slipknot and korn just cuz they're popular (and bad). What about the other hundred of bands that are out there? have you give them a try? they are also good musicians like those from heavy, power, death or any kind of metal band that you "respect". Let me put it this way: can't you tell me a bad band of black metal? i can. can't you tell me a bad band of death metal? i can. All this to say that you can't "filter" all the Alternative genre to the worst bands that are out there, and generalize starting from them :\ Btw, my fav band is from Alternative metal - Mudvayne - so I, and the staff from the site, respect that and that is the reason why there is a seccion about this genre where in fact we are having this discussion right now. p.s. of course you can't go to a black metal tr00 fan and ask him(her) to like alternative! and maybe that is the reason why it is so unpopular like you say: cuz they are like 70% of users that dislike alternative, or cuz you are in the wrong thread! ahaha

"Why is alternative so unpopular here?" Well, you are on a metal site, think of all the people that are purist in thinking and that blame alt. metal for the commercialism and hypcrisy of corporate music today. All the purist, black metal, thrash, death, and etc. will share the common opinion that alt. metal just doesnt do it for them.

because the combination of hypocrisy and ignorance amongst many posters is absolutely staggering. I find it both endlessly comical and endlessly depressing that somehow a bunch of people who can break down 'metal' into 9,000,000 subcategories such as technical death metal, porn grind, ambient black metal, etc. (as if they are fucking scientists attempting to categorize a newfound animal species down to species/genus/phylum/etc) are seemingly incapable of separating the nu-metal from the rest of alternative metal. unbelievable. (just go back and read the responses to this thread. How many of them mention "nu metal" and nothing else?)

To start off with, I DID make a distinction between "Alternative Metal" And "Nu Metal", and even gave Alternative Metal it's Props, so don't try to perscribe me any of these bands when I've already validated my aknowledgement of their talent. Secondly, You are trying to Define the quality of ones character upon their physical Appearence. You said that Just because there are hot Nu Metal Fans that they Arn't posers, man, that's just the Product of ignorance. Just Because someone looks good doesn't mean that they're not a bunch of sluty Cheerleaders looking for some dick to put thier Ghonerrea into. And who sais that all girls that listen to regular metal are ugly? Last Concert I went to there were some Die hard Female Fans and they were all hot. Then you go and try to call all people who listen to true metal skinny. I got news for ya dude, I weigh over 200 pounds and It aint all fat, most of it's muscle. And it doesn't even matter because people come in all different Shapes and sizez on all walks of life have their different likes and dislikes, just because you might like Nu Metal doesn't mean your one of those over obsessive poser goth wannabe gay acting bastards who only do it because it's a fashion trend. There is a difference between someone who just listens to Nu Metal and someone who trys to define themselves because of it. P.S.-I've seen 90 pound guys whip dudes my size and larger around like rag dolls.

11.09.2006 - 03:15 Written by [user id=14754] on 11.09.2006 at 02:53 Yeah, I can agree that there are posers in the Metal Underground to, There are posers everywhere, in every social gathering, so yeah, true Metal And Nu Metal Are no different. But I pointed out that there are people on all walks of life that have their likes and dislikes. I'm not saying just because you listen to Nu metal that that makes you fake, and I'm not saying that just because you listen to other types of metal that your true. I'm By no means an elitist, but I hate Fake people, and most Nu Metal Fans I know are fake, any concert eith Nu metal fans I've been to, most of them are fake, that's my genereal experiece, Like I said in my first post, they're normaly Ostrasized social outcasts who further Ostrasize themselves in order to fit into a social group. Now, they could just be honest with themselves about their likes and dislike like you and I, and Find a place where there are people who actually have things in common with them, and become individuals. But they'd rather be sheep because the feel alone enough as it is. Also, once more, not all Nu Metal girls are Sluty, as mentioned Above, Different people like different things, There are some Skanky true metal Girls and some very Upstanding Nu metal Girls. I never said they were all goddesses, I was only trying to point out to you that just because they're hot doesn't make them real, and just because they're ugly doesn't make them fake, and Vice Versa. Another thing, I'm all about unity, but what's most Important to me is being true to who I am, and I'd rather be with a group of people I belong with than a group of people I pretend to belong with. So I can agree, not all Nu Metal Fans are posers, there are fake Metal Heads Everywhere, sorry to seem like an extremeist.;)

I think it has to do a lot with Metalheads trying to have an image about them. For me, I don't really care. If I like it, I listen to it. I mean, Killswitch Engage is one of my favorite bands. Heck, their album End of Heartache made my top 10 all time favorite list, along with Images and Words, Blackwater Park, Rabbit Songs and Remedy Lane. As far as Nu-Metal goes, I prefer listening to Korn or Static-X during work than Katatonia or Dream Theater. I can't really swing a hammer to "Anna Lee", but I sure can to "Here to Stay".

I'm going to guess and say that alternative metal simply does not appeal to everyone. A lot of people, not just on this forum but in general, assume that alternative metal is the more "mainstream" side of metal, which is just blindly ignorant in my opinion. While "nu-metal" does fall under the category of alternative metal, the genre expands much further than just that one particular style. Furthermore, the avant-garde style of music does not appeal to everyone, which is suggested by it's definition. It's moving away from what is considered to be the normal. Some people will embrace it, others will not. After all you can't blame anyone from disliking a certain genre, unless of course they have a very childish and immature excuse as to why they dislike it.
