Angry with all the crap evolving around Death (not being able to do the UK tour in the height of the Extravaganza tour of Europe due to financial irresponsibility of people "who did business in the band," then as a result a $14,000 debt, and just all those mendacious and greedy people in the music industry), Chuck teamed up with King Diamond guitarist Andy LaRoque, ex-Dark Angel drummer Gene Hoglan, and the fretless bass maestro Steve DiGiorgio (who also performed on the previous album Human) and recorded a masterpiece called Individual Thought Patterns.

There it is the fifth album of Death in six years. The band hasn't had an album the year before releasing this one and they didn't waste their time much, touring the world, being kept busy as hell throughout the whole time. It is explainable then, that this would be probably Death's weakest album. Not that it is a bad album. It is just that Death are so good, that this release is not one, which could go into one's collection of Death albums on the top shelf, it will go on the lowest one.

Death the band died musically, for me, when they stopped playing death metal. So that would be after Spiritual Healing

Hey, isn't Human actually a very death metal record?

Borderline I would say, borderline at most.

One question i read in this website "songmeanings.com/songs/view/120316/" about the "The Philosopher" meaning lyric and someone wrote : "I never thought about it before, but this song very easily be against Paul Masivdal. Paul is a philosopher, and many believe he is homosexual. I just can't picture Chuck getting mad at a guy like Paul..."
is this could be true ??
anyway i love this album specially THE PHILOSOPHER .....

Paul is a philosopher, and many believe he is homosexual.

There is no guesswork anymore. Paul and Sean Reinert both publicly came out as gay in May 2014.

I've been avoiding this album for a while since I've heard such mixed opinions about it.
Now I've listened to the whole album for the first time, and I must say that this one is just as good as all the others in Death's golden discography! The solos sound similar to the ones in Symbolic, while the vocals, drumming, and bass sounds like on Human - but even faster!
Overall very solid and enjoyable release. Chuck has done it again!

This one used to be my favourite back in the day, but I think some of the charm has worn off over the years. Maybe Chuck took things little too far here and tried to force more technical and proggy style too much to the point the whole album sounds little pretentious.

Kind of the opposite it was for me. Didnt like it much back at its time. Came to appreciate it much more in recent years.
Has for me always lacked a clear standout track, which all their other albums have. Overactive imagination is my favourite track here, but it does not compare to best Death songs from other albums after all.
I guess what made me like this album more and more over time was it's very own note, regarding sound, degree of progression, variation in pace -- even though in terms of songwriting it is not up there with other Death albums.
"Overall very solid and enjoyable release." -- Indeed, that it is.

Not their best work, but certainly the most technical, there so much going on between the rhythm and the bass, it's hard to follow at times, but very impressive nonetheless, It's a very good album that unfortunately is sandwiched between two masterpieces.

DiGiorgio really shows impressive skill, and too Chucks solo's, which have so much complexity and rhythem.

One of their best releases, but the vocals are dreadful and some of the tracks on the second half are much weaker than the others.

This album is classic Phase 2 Death IMO. It baffles me how most rate Sound of Perseverance higher than this.

Same here. I'd say it's not as accessible as the other albums and might be disappointing when looking for straight up death metal. The guitar solos are best out of all Death records.
