What genres out there do you find completely useless? I think the whole point of this thread back in the old MS was not coming out and saying what you hate about current genres. The point was to talk about sub-genre names that people just make up due to lyrical content, image, etc...

Good point, but then again there would be no pornogrind, what im trying to say is maybe people should stop backing thier bands with names, and start backing thier bands up with the sound they produce.

Yes, but it's the golden center that we should look for. Don't overdo, but don't stop new genres from evolving either.
But I don't think bands should label their own music. They might have a biased opinion about what they're playing. Fans are the ones for whom it really matters and who should be given a possibility to decide on the genre of music, without obstacles like bias caused by the band refering to themselves in one way or another.

True, forSlipknot say they play death metal, Rhapsody don't consider what they're playing power metal. both cases are of course totally outrageous. Slipknot has nothing to do with death metal whatoever and Rhpsody is euro power metal as euro power metal will ever be.

Viking metal

What's wrong with it? This is very widely used name of genre and i don't see any reason why it should be called stupid. At least it has got foundation - viking metal bands have appropriate lyrics or instruments.

Many of you mentioned MATH METAL? WTF is that? Is that connected to mathematics (then it's fucking ridiculous). Where could i get any lyrics?

Some people call well known heavy metal bands (for example Manowar) in different genres like battle metal or similar crap. Why?

But Pirate Metal (like one person said in this post) is the best. Total ownage!

And dig deeper into that Math Metal thing. It is what the name says, the whole music is very technical, abiding from a traditional heavy metal structure, and the vocals [read carefully] are most of the times indescifreble, and not emos whyning about math class

Why then it's called math metal?

You said that they play in technical way. Why then they need a new dumb name for that genre? What's wrong with technical black/technical death or whatever technical. And math metal sounds so gay.

@Bluecifer: Does that sound like math metal to you?

"including use of complex compositional structures, odd time signatures, and intricate instrumental playing. The high level of musical proficiency is often combined with a lyrical counterpart in the form of epic textual concepts, resulting in lengthy songs and concept albums."

I've heard that a lot of "math metal" bands actually do use numbers and formulas and stuff when composing their music, though. For the record, I think it's a stupid label.

Do bands like Meshuggah actually come up with time signatures like 13/5,15/2 7/3, etc, etc, etc...?

And could anyone of you explain to me what this 'smurf metal' means?

@paganblood: First of all, delete your second post, ya newb

Second of all, we all came to the conclusion that math metal is indeed a respectable sub-genre of metal...bands that actually sit down and map out every bar and every single meter and know exactly which time signature they're playing in all the time and such...

Third of all, smurf metal is just a rip-off of hampster metal where they wanted to put something in their signature to make everyone aware of what genre of metal they listen to...

@rebelos: Well...I've explained that a lot of times but I'll do it again...

Hampster metal in short symbolizes the idea that there are in fact too many sub-genres of metal out there and that many people proclaim new sub-genres of metal all the time based on the slightest difference in sound...i.e: so the inside joke was that we could invent a new sub-genre of metal where there are hampsters making noises in the background and we could call it hampster metal.

What's so stupid about this? Both folk and black metal are accepted genres, while pagan metal is more or less crossoever between folk and black.

They're just adjectives, as far as I'm concerned. They describe how the band relates to the genre of black metal.

Pagan metal is a cross-over between black and folk metal. Not like Finntroll, mind you, more like Goat of Mendes or whatever. Basically it's rawer, harsher and generally not so happy'ish version of folk metal.
Listen to this.

Well I think genres and sub-genres and sub-sub-genres... have always exist and will be exist. That is happen because people always invent new names or mix existing names to describe something. If something is more precisely described it needs more names or longer names. But the most important thing is to not study some name but phenomenon and real matter. Names have only auxiliary significance. There are not essence of reality.

I know and if I didn't I'd still believe you
Just wanted to point out to people that its folk/black metal. It's only called pagan metal beacuse of the lyrics & image. If a band would all but copy a distinctly pagan band's style, but sing and show exclusively Christian motifs, would they still be regarded as pagan metal? I doubt it...

funk metal, wtf?

Funk metal
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Funk metal is a type of music that incorporates hard-driving heavy metal guitar riffs, the pounding bass rhythms characteristic of funk, and sometimes, hip hop-style rhymes.

The style emerged in the mid-1980s pioneered by Jane's Addiction, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Primus, Faith No More, and Fishbone.

No problem morbid_freak, although I really wouldn't say that Jane's Addiction are really funk metal...I see them more as alternative folk groove rock...
