A really interesting question, IMO.
Everyone in MS like metal but I'd like to know the reasons.

Personally, I like metal because:
*Metal is a really creative music, because you find lots of different styles, from melodic metal, combinated with classical, epic, medieval music to extreme metal.
*I feel represented with metal, due to the variety of genres, I feel represented specially with melodic
*Many metal bands are full of culture
*In metal you find true musicians that don't do that music that you hear for some months and then it's completly forgotten
*Many musicians and metalheads are really interesting people and thanks to metal, now I feel that I have really good friends

These are the reasons I remember now, what I can affirm is that since I listen to metal, I'm a very different person, and I find many things of myself thanks to it .

So, what about you?

Metal is an amazing genre because it went so far away from all the frontiers. You see, the first rock bands were 'heavy' at it's time. Looks like people were afraid to make so much noise. It keep evolving so much until it's just like a wall of noise (music), powerful and with a lot of meaning.

Then it's that, as you see, rock (the prime example), how can it be so different from other rock bands? But in metal you always find so different music, people that PLAY and experiment with music at their will.

The last point it's that let's say that I'm walking on the street with my MP· and I don't want to hear the cars or anything. Metal is the only genre with music that provides us from a 'wall of sound', that doesn't ever stop from sounding and exiliates you from the outer world. Yeah, this was the freak answer xD.

I started listening to metal because hated rap and the new pop, I needed to find something different, this was about 5 to 6 years ago.I kept listening to metal because I liked the power( or frenzy) i felt whenever I listened to Metallica, Manowar or Iron Maiden, when I listened to the mainstream stuff(not all of it) I felt empty and bored.
Today I listen to metal because I think its Technically the most advanced music todays world has to offer, and because it still has and gives me the power that I became addicted to

//Metal is so awesome because its not only music to me, but a lifestyle. When people see me and my friends with our Death shirts on, blaring heavy metal out of our headphones, they know to get out of the way and bow down. Its a way of expression, and relief. It also feels good to be different than everyone else listening to that stupid rap shit. I also think that heavy meal fans are the coolest. While other music genres have their fans, the metal fan base is so dedicated because its so special. You either love it or hate it, which makes the fans that love it incredible...HEAVY METAL THUNDER FOR LIFE//

I have two main reasons.
-Not to diss cheesy piano ballads on the radio, but classic metal is some of the most emotional music Ive ever heard. Th closing machine-gun riffing in One with the barked vocals is a prime example of this.
-The instrumentation is usually monstrously good. Not like... Fusion good, but still monstrous.

I find that no other genre of music is as passionate as metal (or at least the kind of metal I listen to). I love how so much of it sounds like it came off a movie soundtrack. Listening to the overpowering emotion in the music just makes you feel alive.

what about classical music? i mean, you personally may not get the feelings from classical that you get from metal, but classical IS emotion. taking it one step further: it's music designed to portray emotions, without lyrics explaining the emotions it's conveying.

That is true. It's individual preference. I used to play the piano and the violin and personally found a lot of pieces quite emotionally confronting (even though I chose them!), which is part of the reason why I quit. Classical music has a depressing and stilling effect on me, it makes me feel detached from my surroundings. Whereas the music I listen to these days makes me feel inspired, happy, connected with humanity - much nicer feelings! And these days I do need good lyrics

But I know not everyone reacts that way so if you can appreciate classical music then that's a gift.

It's a difficult question to answer properly but I think that I like metal more than other types of music because I have become so accostumed to it and I never get sick of it but instead love it more and more. It is the only type of music I can enjoy in any mood I am in. It's just very varied and great music, to put it shortly.

I really don't know why I like metal. I don't sense any kind of profound emotional connection between me and the music like many (but not all) of you do. I listen to it when happy, sad, or angry. However, when I'm really anxious I usually won't listen to metal, or any other music for that matter.

The extremeness of the music is what seems to attract me. Most metal is loud, aggressive, cynical, sarcastic, frank, honest, intelligent, observant, flippant, ridiculous, self-important, skillful, wild, annoying, and fascinating. There are many exceptions to some of these attributes--e.g. power metal seems to be a bit more "positive" than the rest of the crowd. I have a theory that I like to listen to metal because I need a ruthless, totally unrestrained dissipation of energy sometimes. And figuring out why I need that is like figuring out what my life is really all about, so...that's a little difficult. Other reasons I like metal:

-- Fantasy is a big part of the metal listening experience for me--I almost always daydream as I'm pacing around the floor, CD player in hand.
-- These days metal sets you apart from the crowd (but not TOO far apart)
-- Very interesting history of the genre, not well known to outsiders
-- I like to chuckle at extreme metal sometimes. Though many ignorant adults find gruesome extreme metal frightening, being my late teenaged-self I sometimes find it amusing because it is so over-the-top.
-- I'm too lazy to go out and explore genres with similar themes such as hardcore punk rock, goth rock, or underground rap. At some level this is just the genre that I happened to pick, and now I'm too absorbed in it to go checking out much else for a while.
--Uhhh I can't think of anything else. It rocks.
-- Oh yeah and I like this hand gesture:

EDIT; Several times to make some statements more clear.

I can get the same emotions from classical music and folk music as I get from Metal.

You'bve got a pont there.
Like classical and (probably) folk, Metal has many expressions and can get a wide variety of emotions and feeligns when you listen to it.
Exmaple.... hummm...
I listen to Sentenced and it gets me melancholic.
Dimmu Borgir makes me smile
Catamenia makes me wake up
Pelican makes me think of sex.
Tool makes me think
Falconer makes me smile
In Extremo makes me dance

Why I listen to messianic folkmusic sometimes? It is really much similar to the metal that I listen to: Fast, with a lot of speed changes, very beautiful and powerful lyrics worshipping my Lord on a beautifal way. So, I listen to metal about 95% of the time, the other 5 is often messianic folk, and I think that is great combination, mostly because the music is a little different than what I'm used to.

Nice thread. It's a good way to fantasize about things and to make people think about their daily lives and their implication in music. Metal nowadays includes a very wide variety of music, they have a lot in common but still are so different (I'm talking about metal genres)
I think i can give a terse response to the original question:

I LIKE METAL BECAUSE I HAVE GOOD TASTES!!

It's just what I like. my preference, and I'm very passionate about it. Besides it chose me. I say that because I didn't even know Metal existed when in 2000 and a maiden CD accidentally came, and I opened it and feel in Love. from there I just Expanded., and so The Music chose me. True Story. It's a way of life for me not just music. Sometimes I even rock out with my cock out
