I couldn't find a topic like this, so I'm not sure if there's a lot of interest in it. But since one of the biggest reasons for my coming here is to discover new music, I think we ought to have a topic dedicated to recommending the latest and greatest music to have just been released. We have staff picks and great reviews already, but a lot of stuff goes under the radar. So share your exciting new discoveries or the comebacks of old favorites with the rest of us here.

I guess it's nice to start this from the beginning of the year, but you can of course recommend some 2010 albums you think were overlooked, too.

My recommendations that haven't already been covered by MS reviews are, so far:

Crowbar - Sever The Wicked Hand: Kirk got sober and found Jesus. Good for him, I guess. It doesn't show in the music, which is as thick, sludgy and melancholy as ever before. Another solid addition to an incredibly consistent discography, if not quite their strongest effort.

DoomSword - The Eternal Battle: I've been pretty unfamiliar with DoomSword for a long time even if I've known about them and heard a song here and there. That's still the case. From what I can tell, though, The Eternal Battle is not quite as doomy and epic as their first albums but rather leans towards traditional heavy metal with the faster riffs and stuff. Pretty impressive nonetheless, there's something authentic and endearing about the band. (Couldn't find a sample, sorry.)

Weedeater - Jason... The Dragon: The sludge/stoner act Weedeater buzzes and crushes away with a deep, heavy sound that really appeals to me. When they're loud, they're tight. There's some strange filler and interludes on this album that don't really fit in, though.

Orchid - Capricorn: Orchid have released a lauded EP already, but Capricorn is their first full-length. They play groovy old school Sabbath worship. It's not new, but why should it be when it's this good?

also, new baring teeth album called atrophy is pretty cool from first couple of listens. heavily influenced by ulcerate and gorguts. def worth checking out if your into ulcerate, gorguts, deathspell, and generally unorthodox death metal

This I must check , thanks for the heads up

Been digging the new *shels album a lot. Plains of The Purple Buffalo. They play something like atmospheric sludge/post-rock/alt-rock.

Dephosphorus released their debut LP Axiom (yes, it's only released on LP) a while ago, great technical and chaotic grindcore/black metal. Here is a cool track from YT.

EDIT: You can download it for free at the band's website http://dephosphorus.com/download-axiom/

Thumbs up for suggesting the latest Lazarus A.D. as most people wrote them off for going in a different direction. By the way, check my review.

Dornenreich - Tief Im Land, from their new album Flammentriebe. This song doesn't really give a whole picture of the album, but it's exciting enough to get people's attention.

About Mitochondrion, I liked how that album opened, but I didn't like how all the good stuff just disappeared bit by bit while listening further.

It's one of my favorite albums this year. He did a fucking great job with it.

Dornenreich or Mitochondrion?

Dornenreich
There was tons of production work on this album and it actually bothers me a little bit.

Bothers you, in which way? Great album I agree, might even raise it to 10 at the end of this year, or sooner. Production is nice to my ears on this release.

It's just a change of pace for that style of music, something that ill need to get used to. Hopefully this album gets people interested in the rest of the work.

I knew it.....Thrash has become very Meh. 80s Bands were so great that it's very extremely impossible to do albums as good as theirs.
Still, I anticipate new Megadeth. The title kind of drives me off, but well....Endgame was good, and they reunited with the bassist who played in "Rust In Peace"

The album hasn't even been recorded yet but you know it's gonna be absolutely excellent. Yet another supposed screamo/atmospheric black metal band:

Other pre-production songs here: http://thegreatoldones.bandcamp.com/album/pre-prod-2011

[EDIT]

Great psychedelic stoner rock collaboration between Merzbow and Boris. The only time these two outfits are any good these days is when they come together:

I strongly recommend:

Ulcerate's "The Destroyers of All"
Fleshgod Apocalypse's "Agony"
Craft's "Void"
Decapitated's "Carnival Is Forever" (even if it is the worst Decapitated album to date, it still is Top 5 this year. Even their worst release can rival any great album)
