I have a question. What did Dimmu Borgir do to be considered sellouts? I find nothing wrong with them, other than the fact that they have nice production quality..... Wait, that's one of the things I love about them.

Is it because they don't have the raw sound that black metal is supposed to have? A friend of mine put it, "it has to sound like they did all the recording in the middle of the forest."

I really do not understand this, so could somebody please fill me in as to what they did to be hated so much.

I definitely choose for Dimmu Borgir. I don't care if they are called sellouts, I very much enjoy the music they make. I always did, and still do. But Cradle Of Filth isn't even Black Metal anymore nowadays. It's more like some kinda Gothic Metal. So my vote goes to Dimmu Borgir.

Er I went for Dimmu Borgir on this one mainly because of their first 2 albums. For both bands there are little bits and pieces which I like in their newer stuff but only some particular parts of tracks and stuff.

Actually I voted Dimmu for their "newer" stuff, Enthrone Darkness Triumphant is a masterpiece, IMO.

Well I have a tendency of always comparing their current stuff to Stormblast. Because of that I find their newer albums a bit disappointing As I said earlier though, there are little bits of certain tracks which I like but otherwise nothing much. Its a similar case for CoF as well although I dont like Dani's vocals at all.

Yeah, I agree, I hate new albums, comparing with Stormblast it is laughable, for me of cause
Few days ago I saw their new video and I think for my self: 'Hmm not bad' and than I played Stormblast... It is better not to write what I thought then...
Anyway, don't like new Cradle Of Fitlh much but they still have more good albums than Dimmu Borgir, again, I am talking only in my name. I don't like only Thornography and all other albums are very good or better

Cradle up to Midan was alright, I have NEVER heard anything from DB and don't particularly want to. So Cradle recieves one biased vote

Ill be honest Cradle are like one of my top fav bands... but i will admit they are a tottal sell out.. i mean their early stuff from 1992 and so on like the album Orgiastic Pleasures and a few others are brillitant for the simple reason their where once true black metal but now ... well its just easy listening music ... though midian they did bring back some good tracks then after taht went off again... till Nymphetamine.. which personally i really do like a fair few of the songs ... but it isnt how they use to be and now well.. What the heck are they doing ? it isnt cradle no more

Probably Dimmu Borgir overall, being they have released, in the past better quality, and overall more solid albums...despite moving away from their true black metal roots in favor of a symphonic approach. Cradle of Filth's first 3 albums(their only real black metal releases) in my opinion are awesome pieces of symphonic black metal,...but overall they over the years made a dramatic change in styles taking a much more peusdo-gothic metal approach by over-using the keyboards, female vocals, and just falling so far from their original greatness in my opinion. I'd have to say I like COF's first 3 albums better than all of Dimmu's albums except "For All Tid", "Stormblast", and "Enthrone Darkness Triumphant", but at least all of Dimmu's material is listenable, unlike COF's new stuff which bores me and annoys me so freaken' much.

It's in every bands nature to change or evolve in someways it's called reaching musical maturity or simply getting bored at doing what most others are doing. If one is in an ambitious band the first thing the bands will eventually want is being unique in someways. Dimmu Borgirs early ambitions were to be unique and to be one of the most if not the heavy-est metal band one could listen to if they succeeded is arguable.

I agree, I don't think Dimmu necessarily sold-out they just progressed and branched out on their original more classical and thrash influences.

I agree, this debate of this or that band in this or that Metal, and this or that team in this or that country in soccer sucks or rules is just as rediculous as it gets. Who cares if you hate this or that band or team it's just and always will be your opinion. And since it's your opinion you don't have to try and force your opinion on to others. Don't get me wrong I'm not saying it's not ok to hate this or that band I'm just saying it's weird if you hate a bands latest releases in advance hence the name not because of the music it's playing.

Well in my opinion neither band actually ever were Black Metal bands, but a mix of different styles put beautifully together, heh I know I'm going to be stirring some persons blood with those words but that's my opinion. There surely were and are (at least in Dimmu case) some Black tendencies in their music (I haven't heard much of COF material so I'm not going to judge them in advance).

I haven't voted as both of them cannot be considered Black Metal now, infact Cradle has NEVER been Black Metal.

I do like both bands for some of their past albums like Enthrone Darkness Triumphant and Spiritual Black Dimensions for Dimmu Borgir and Bitter Suites to Succubi and Damnation and a Day by Cradle. I havent heard the pre-1999 albums by Cradle though, so thats a second reason for not voting.

If i was going to vote on post 2000 albums, then Cradle has my vote though I don't like the Nymphetamine album one bit

For me 50:50. But I vote For Cradle Of Filth because they have more and better videoclips.

CoF and DB black metal? Right... and pigs can fly...but besides that, I'll have to go with DB, Dani's annoying vocals just make my head ache.

And I thought this forum couldn't get anymore intelligent than this anyway, I'm not sure why people feel the need to waste time and energy debating whether or not this bands is KVLT anymore whatever, I grow weary of it.
I don't believe either band has sold out to be honest as if they had would they still be creating the music they do (I think the answer is no) I think Dani has to be one of the best lyricist ever (I believe not many people understand his lyrics enough and that's why people don't like him because they are trying to hide their own insercurities of being completely stupid).
If the bands had sold out wouldn't they be making woe is me I'm so emo or were to political for you, music and changing their style and image to look like crybaby-english jizz stain chris martin.
Another reason for the dislike for Dani is that in interviews he has a very english sense of humour and as many people know that humour often gets lost in translation and they end up taking him seriuosly (when he jokes).
One last thing if selling out means more mainstream accessibility then doesn't that make Darkthrone sellouts (ie releasing single and pre album "tasters", I'll be interested if anyone can make an intelligible reply to this essay

While you are indeed intitled to your own opinions "Fu-gothemo-ck is not an actual word and makes no sense whatsoever if you are going to have your opinions please use basic English as that's what it was intended for.

I think both are betrayers to the true black that began in bands such mayhem,darkthrone,immortal and...
I tried a lot but I couldn't see any elements of true BM in COFs last album. but dimmu borgir last album is better

I don't think either band has sold out, Dimmu Borgir are doing the exactly what they've always wanted to do which is make grand and epic songs, but they just never had the money to make it sound as grand and and as epic as they now do, Just because they've become more popular and have decent production it doesn't mean they've changed at all, They're still singing the about the exact same things and their music is techinically alot faster and alot more extreme than it was back in the early days. Not that extremity actually counts for anything.

Cradle of Filth on the other hand have made some of the best albums in the black metal genre and although I'm the first to admit their most recent albums are not that great, people seem to think that because they have grown out of actualy caring just how "evil" they are or everyone else thinks they, that means they've sold out. If you read their lyrics and listen to them speak you realise what they are saying is some pretty funny shit! They don't care about trying to make black metal elitists love them, they're just mocking the whole scene, their fame, and the whole damn world. The only reason that they became so hated in the first place is because people loved some of their early albums that much and these days it's become cool to hate them, which is a real shame as alot of people new to the scene discard them without ever giving them a chance.

But that's just my humble opinion.

Dimmu Borgir: great band. I've been recently into them since listening to a few songs. The symphonic part in their music is so powerful and stands out the most in my mind. Not to mention, their new stuff with Hellhammer on drums is sweet (The Chosen Legacy).

Cradle of Filth: could never get into them. Music is somewhat decent, but ugh, Danny Filth's vocals are so horrid to me. Can't listen to them through a whole song.

So yeah, DB no doubt.
