A really interesting question, IMO.
Everyone in MS like metal but I'd like to know the reasons.

Personally, I like metal because:
*Metal is a really creative music, because you find lots of different styles, from melodic metal, combinated with classical, epic, medieval music to extreme metal.
*I feel represented with metal, due to the variety of genres, I feel represented specially with melodic
*Many metal bands are full of culture
*In metal you find true musicians that don't do that music that you hear for some months and then it's completly forgotten
*Many musicians and metalheads are really interesting people and thanks to metal, now I feel that I have really good friends

These are the reasons I remember now, what I can affirm is that since I listen to metal, I'm a very different person, and I find many things of myself thanks to it .

So, what about you?

*Metal is unapologetically different. Metal musicians deliberately create music that does not follow any of the current conventions in popular music. It is a form of music that is primarily create and consumed by people who, to some extent, consider themselves to be outside the mainstream.
*Metal is aggressive, and is a creative outlet to let off some pent up energy.
*Metal is intelligent. The lyrical themes nowadays in metal has progressed beyond the beer & babes of the 1980's, and tackles a lot of serious topics. I may not agree with a lot of it, but I find that a lot of metal music really gets me thinking.
*Metal is deverse, and it builds on musical traditions that have come before. Look at the number of bands that make metal with a classical, jazz, blues, and/or folk foundation. Metal is not just a bunch of guys pounding on instruments - it is largely performed by people who understand music and want to push what they have learned into uncharted territory.

I like metal because it's different than most other music genres, the musicians are highly educated (at least in the bands I am listening to), the music is about something, wheather if it is fantasy or history or hatred, but it has a saying.
Lately I started reading the Lord Of The Rings trilogy, all books in one cover, and it's a thick book, and I read it in school and some girls started laughing at me because I was reading!!! this shows the stupidity of modern humanity, people are proud to say they have never read a book if it wasn't for school asignment, and in metal, there are bands that take their lyrics from books, litriture, poetry (mostly viking and black metal bands...).
Metalers are also much kinder people, I don't know about the rest of the world, but where I live almost every weekend someone get stabbed in a club whereas I went to a party and took part in a mosh-pit, and some guy lost his glasses during the action, we all stoped everything and helped him find them, I don't think this thing can happen in any other music based society.
Also, in many genres of metal there is no real money one can live only from music, so bands are much more attentive to their music than to the money and fame like in other genres.
As was said in the original post, there are many styles of metal, this is the only type of music where there can be 4 different vocal styles and still be considered as one genre (under some sub-genres)

Metal is the only genre that makes me want to charge into battle, then sacrifice a goat to satan, then start a revolution, slay a dragon, rapidly spin my hair in a circular motion, slay another dragon, then rip something's heart out and eat it, and all in the span of an hour.

I like metal because of the power and heavyness in the music, and because metal has several styles, and you can listen to anything from heavy metal to grindcore depending on what mood you're in.

I also like the communities that from around metal, which, as far as I can see, doesn't quite exist among other genres (not that I've looked around, so feel free to correct me on that), and the sort of "screw your opinion, I have my own" attitude that exist, although it can also be very annoying at a lot of times (read. when those opinions doesn't agree withmine ).

I've lost this topic!
I like Black, Death and Industrial Metal, I'm looking for these subgenres... I like these genres because of the vocals. growls, screams, and even their clean voices are nice. and also some special and great characters like Attila Csihar, who is the best metal performer in my opinion. and other men like Ihsahn. Dead. Varg. Good or bad, they are interesting...
Then I listen to some Gothic, Doom and Progressive Metal, because of their talent in writing and composing music.my Gothic metal circle is limited to Moonspell, and I don't like other Gothic bands much..
And at last, I don't like Thrash, Power, Nu and Heavy metal... ok, some Thrash metal bands are great, but in general this genre doesn't fit to my taste.
So I listen to metal, because of people who are working in this music. If other genres had such interesting characters I would get in that genre. but surely other genres don't have it, but some EBM and Industrial bands, which I like these genres beside Metal too...

interesting question, as someone whos first albums consisted of Guns n Roses Use your Illusion and Public Enemy, I feel I can say I have a varied taste in music.

A lot of you guys say its aggressive? well not all of it is, to be honest I find a lot of metal samey, and there are only a few bands who create a new sound, otherwise its just copied off another artist.

I find a much more emotional connection with some rock and metal, but its not the only music I listen to

I like it purely because I prefer everything about metal over any other genre. But I guess if I had to say anything;
*The vocals.
*The instruments/instrumentals/instrument related solos.
*The lyrics, they really are just amazing.

Well that's about the metal genres I listen to anyway. I don't like all metal subgenres.

I like metal because of the talent it would take to put together some of the great metal albums. The instruments take alot of skill to make the sounds they do. But overall I love the angry presence to it. Metal makes me wanna smash peoples faces through windows, depending on the song of course

I dig metal cause I'm greedy. I don't want half-assed music, I want the most extreme and full sound I can acquire. Metal seems to be the most rapidly evolving of all genres and almost anyone who considers themselves music aficionados will no doubt find themselves observing a metal band and being impressed.

i feel the same exact way

Why? Because I enjoy listening to it, because it is one of the few genres that can really effect my mood, and I just generally love the sound.

In addition, it can be extremely creative, inventive, and original, unlike many other genres.

Pretty much the same....I like it because I do lol Dont have a concrete reason why I like it, just like listening to intelligent music, which is why Im not an advocate of metal perse. I also think theres a lot of shit genres that holds no appeal to me and that I find just as annoying or lame as many commercial music or pop.

So I like MY metal because it is something with re-listening value, it grows on you and becomes better over time and its the only genre(s) which you can like at first but grow to love it more and more.

I like metal for many reasons. first of all it gives me a great feeling and it's there for the best and for the worst. it's a music style that fullfills me completly and can be mixed with lots of other types of music wich make it very special, diverse and different. for me it's the must truly music ever maded and melodies really come from the heart within all the strength, power and intensity. lyrics could be really tricky sometimes, but when a metal lyric touch you... it's forever.

I like metal because it's a very diverse genre. You could like the most br00tal, extreme music ever and be a metalhead. Yet, at the same time, you could like most complex and interesting music and be a metalhead. I also like the fact that metal is kind of like a big community, one big family, if you will. And the fact that it's not popular because it's 'popular'. And it's not one of those genres that without mainstream support, they're dead and no one cares about them. It's popular because it doesn't require mainstream support. The biggest bands can have little to no radio airplay at all, and be so huge because some guy liked them and said to his friend "dude, you gotta check this band out. They're the best fucking band ever" and then that guy said the same thing to another guy, and so on.

The main reason I like it is, as mentioned, you can go from one extreme to another, and still be listening to metal. Which is very rare in a music genre.
