I think Mastodon are hugely underrated and Crack the Skye is one of the best progressive albums ever, it should be up there with the greats like blackwater park and images and words. As a band, mastodon provide everything to me, with musical complexity and also great riffs and grooves. Really looking forward a new album (jonah hex didn't count even if it was pretty good)

Wow I don't understand all the hype around Crack The Skye.. I believe Mastodon should be known for ''Remission'' and ''Leviathan'' . Ok crack was good but not even close to this... Raw, brutal and pure ! Thats the beginning of Mastodon

21.06.2011 - 07:35 Written by Guib on 21.06.2011 at 05:23 +1 The new mastodon fans have only heard Crack the Skye and they don't know shit about what mastodon were. Anyway if i remember reading it right, they said their new material was similar to their leviathan and remission days

Leviathan and remission are still awesome albums, i guess crack the skye just has a wider appeal. personally, im not too into sludge metal but i still love mastodons early stuff.

Each album is widely different from the rest and they all rock considering what they are. They were meant to be different as a concept over the four elements; Remission (fire), Leviatihan (Water), Blood Mountain (Earth and personal favourite) and Crack The Skye (Air, obviously). I don't know where their first album, Call of The Mastodon, fits in, but I think that the four albums really capture their respected elements really well. Rock on.

I think the new album art is awesome. I love the old album art, but the band's elemental series of albums is over and I think the new album is fresh. Plus I think it's good to see the band do something goofy with their album art. It's just refreshing.

09.07.2011 - 15:38 Written by Spirit Molecule on 08.07.2011 at 05:57 I like it. I think it looks very rock'n'rollish. It's simple and animalistic but also surreal (with all the jaws and whatnot). I would expect some songs that cut to the chase and just focuses on rocking your socks off mixed with some 70's psychedelic-inspired music. However, they'll probably surprise me one way or another. EDIT: Hmm. I justed looked at it again. Judging from the "M" in Mastodon, there's definitely some viking-stuff going on. The animal head carved in wood is also reminiscent of the way the front of old viking ships were sculptured. Psychedelic viking rock?
