The idea is simple... Talk about the languages you speak, and the ones you would like to learn. What are they? Why do you like them? What is that you don't like about them? How and where did you learn them? What is your mother language?

Personally...

- (As you *might* have noticed) I speak English. Not really well, but I think I can say I know the basis. But it is not my first language: French is. I don't want to sound pretentious or anything, but I speak French really well. Yet, it is the third language I learnt.
- My mother language is Arabic, it was the first one I learnt as I am Moroccan and was born in Morocco. But my parents speak French more than Arabic, and I started going to a French school when I was 5, thus, I started forgetting Arabic. I was still as able to understand it as before, but I couldn't speak it anymore, past my 8th birthday. (Some other important factors were involded, but it is not necessary to mention them.)
- The second language I learnt was Spanish, because of/thanks to Spanish TV channels and my grandmother, who only spoke Spanish and Arabic. But when we left the city where we were living (Tanger, just in front of Spain), I stopped watching Spanish channels, and left my grandmother as well, and then, forgot Spanish too .
- That's when French comes. It became my first language around 8. As the French school system wants it, I started learning English at 11. And I unexpectedly didn't have any difficulty with it. I have always had the best mark in that subject, without making any effort for that. Unfortunately it is still not enough. I realised my level was not as good as I thought it was.
- The next year, (I was 12) I chose Latin, but I had to stop after a few months, otherwise I wouldn't have been able to start Spanish the following year. I started re-learning Spanish at 13.
- But since I took Spanish at 13, I couldn't take German at 15. I had too many subjects and the teachers wouldn't let me add German. Yet it is the language I really want to learn. I like the sonority of it, and I watch German TV channels just to hear it, even if I don't get a word of it .
- As a consequence, the two languages I can speak the best are French, and English.

As you see the topic is vast, there is a lot to say...

Kariasakis, really. What are you talking about? I know it may seem like i keep giving you shit about everything you say and I don't want it to seem that way but most of the time you really do not know what you're talking about. And you really aren't the person to determine what is difficult and what is not. Most of what you say really doesn't have much to do with reality and the only way you'd actually be able to tell what is difficult and what is not would be if you knew all the languages yourself.
Which you don't. And you can defend yourself by saying that you actually do know because you understand most of the slavic languages. But let me tell you now, you don't.
Everything you've ever tried to write to show your knowledge was wrong, very wrong. You don't speak the languages, you don't know the grammar.
So please... don't. It makes no sense.

But i still stand beside my point. These were facts. Not attacks. Facts.

@Remus - I don't think we'll speak a common language. But it'd be nice not having to read English that looks like it came from an online translator. XD

I will learn to speak Swedish at some point or another. I might do German just for the hell of it. And Spanish, it's a fun language to speak from what little I know of it. But Swedish is the tongue of my ancestors, so it means a lot to me to learn it.

My mother tongue is Portuguese and the only language besides this one that I speak is English. I want to learn German one day, but I'm completely broke at the moment, so I don't think I can afford a good German course. It's an interesting language and there are quite some German authors that would be interesting to read in the original, especially Goethe.
For literary purposes, however, I think French would be an interesting language, after all many great novelists and poets (especially the symbolists) are from France.

Sort of I guess.....though in spoken language these rules are usually ignored....for instance we have a word "diivan" but people still pronunce it as "tiivan" or "läheme" is pronunced as "lähmä" or even "lehma"....lol....it's like using "превед" instead of "привет"....otherwise yeh....I think that our alphabet corresponds to yours more or less.....

Hmmm, didn't know that Serbian is that close to Russian (or at least that sentence was...).

Fluently I can only speak Russian and English. Learned some German and French, but they're rusty at best because I don't get a chance to practice them. On the next-to-learn list is probably Spanish...if I ever get enough time/motivation. :-P

Nah, it's actually as similar to Russian as Finnish is to Estonian.....I speak Estonian and suck at Finnish....in fact I don't understand a shite....same situation when I try to speak proper Serbian....I can't....you can't just rely on the fact they are related languages.....

I think it's far better to have a more or less entirely phonetic alphabet for a language than have the idiosyncratic irregularities that we have in English writing and pronunciation.

I agree with that entirely.

By the way, do you all think that English is easy to learn? I'm interested in this because i was told no. A lot of times.
But when you think about it. 90% of us here, who are not from English speaking countries can speak and write it very well.
Also a lot of us, including me just picked it up when they were kids, from TV etc.
I've never actually spent a day in my life studying English. This is all from television.
So, what do you think? Is it easier than most languages? As i said, it seems it is, yet people keep saying no.

Well it's easier to learn how to speak and write the language like that , but if you really want to learn the language(all the little rules ) ,and stuff like that, Serbian is one of the hardest in the world because there are so many grammar rules ( many of them don't exist in western European countries )

Well, it's said that english is one of the most borrowed languages in the world. I'm sure if you think about it, you easily find some words that spells and sounds roughly the same in you language as the english equalent. We also fed by it daily, just think of how many webpages you have visited today. How many was in english and how many was in your own language? And in most countries learning english is mandotory in the schools. I've read english since first grade, so I've had plenty of time to get used to this subject.

To get to the point, english no harder or easier to learn then any other language. It just that we are constantly is exposed to it, that we find it easier. You can ask a person who have learned english as an adult, and you immediately notice that it's alot harder for them to express themselves, and also they tend to have a much greater accent.
