I made it clear hundreds of times - meticulous naming of music is a ridiculous thing. No, not always. Naming music "classical" as opposed to "rock" or "folk" is perfectly ok, because it describes things that are very different. But creating dozens of subsubsubgenres of metal is simply idiotic. I remember numerous pointless discussions whether a specific band plays funeral doom, or maybe death doom, or maybe funeral/death doom with epic elements! Or Epic classic doom, or maybe crust/punk grindcore with metalcore elements and symhonic influences. You see what I mean.

I don't see a problem with people wanting to be able to categorize the music they listen to. It's human nature to label and order things that are similar and to differentiate them from things that are different.

I love them all. I really don't understand this neurotic obsession to keep things tight and tidy. Music is not that simple. The world is not that simple. The fact that we can come up with new, overlapping, redundant, localized and fitting labels is a sign of creativity, and shows the music scene is alive. That the fanbase is alive. I usually don't like whalecore, but 33% of it is sweet. You know, the 33% that consists of The Call of the Wretched Sea. (Edit: Derp. I just realize From Mars To Sirius is part of it, so that's 66% of whalecore!)

While I'm not one to get bothered by people creating labels for music, labeling does have its pros and cons. With genre labels, besides being a way to simply describe something to someone else before they listen, it can make searching for new bands of a particular style a lot easier using the Internet. It also can give a sense of scene or being part of a movement, which some people may care about. However, defining certain music by a genre may incorrectly stereotype some bands alienate potential listeners. For example, I know a lot of people who avoided Between the Buried and Me just because they were labeled metalcore only to hear them at a later date and really enjoy the band's music. In attempts to create genre labels, some people also come up with really lame names that tend to stick for whatever reason. I also feel like when some genres are created a lot bands tend to jump on the, uh, bandwagon for lack of a better term. I see a lot of that with djent lately (while I have no problem with creating genre labels I think it is a dumb genre name.) My problem with djent is that not only is it a silly sounding word, but the bands that can fall under the label "djent" can really have a varying range of sound. You see some progressive bands fall into djent, some are metalcore or deathcore, some or instrumental, some are post metal, and some are technical metal. I think a genre should describe an overall sound rather than just what the guitar is doing.

You guys have any idea about "Hatecore"? .............Yes? No? whatever. This latest shooting rampage at suburban Sikh temple in Milwaukee by an avowed white dude Wade Michael Page, who also attacked Obama( calling a symptom of the multiculturalism that has undermined US) was a lead vocalist of the band "End Apathy". They play Punk Metal i guess but people targeted them as HATECORE. Their music is straight-on-your-face Punk, controversial harsh lyrics and strong supporters of supremacist movement which Page was pioneering in his music. But, hatecore? Is there any kinda of this genre ever been created? Such a strange stuff i suppose.

Which is basically pointless if all they talk or 'rap' about is pretentious nerd-related themes. Also see 'Geeksta rap' if you want another stupid name imo for a genre.

Account deleted Written by [user id=122079] on 11.08.2012 at 17:48 Sure it does. Most of the bands are known for pulling beats from 8bit tracks or sampling music from nerdy shows/movies etc. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3zvGRNu08B4 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I7xNDrNlxlI And besides, while rap and metal are both types of music, genre labels serve slightly different functions in both. While in metal, labels tend to describe an overall sound (grindcore, black metal, hardcore, thrash, etc.), in rap labels can be applied sometimes just to separate artists of lyrical content. Many rap or hip-hop enthusiasts care as much or more about lyrical content than the beats. Some rap fans absolutely do not want to listen to music about sex, drugs, or killing and the nerdcore label helps identify bands that have a slightly different lyrical perspective. If we are going to start bringing other genres outside of metal into this discussion, which mind you is in the metal forum, then you better at least understand the reasons for genre labels in other types of music.

I've seen a few bands listed here as "thrashy power". Isn't that heavy? And "epic atmospheric" seems redundant, as epic has some degree of atmosphere and atmospheric is often epic.

Grindcore is particularly guilty of subdividing based entirely on lyrical content: Goregrind, Pornogrind, etc. I have even heard of "Vegetarian Grindcore" being used to describe cattle decapitation. Black metal also does this to some degree: National Socialist Black Metal, White Metal, Satanic Black Metal . . . These labels are not giving me any useful information!

Me thinks it already seems useless to come up with new genres but what's even more stupid is associating a band that has no desire of being labeled with a specific genre with that term. Take Ghost Brigade, for example. They don't even like to be called "Melodeath", "Doomcore" or "Atmospheric Sludge Metal."

Probably already mentioned a million times before but "djent". Here's a quote from post-metal band Rosetta regarding their thoughts about it: "Maybe we should start calling doom metal 'DUNNN" Porncore is also a pretty stupid name.
