Jup's Top 100 of the naughts

I hate making lists. Emotions are not quantifiable. Albums cannot be rated and certainly cannot be neatly ordered into a list, where say, Esoteric is better than Anaal Nathrakh an equal amount as The Deftones are better than Killing Joke. No. It's all bullshit.

But it can be fun.

So perhaps once in a decade it's OK to make a silly little list. A list that will most likely seem ridiculously flawed to me in a few days and downright stupid in a few years. A list that is a waste of time and angers my girlfriend who would prefer I instead made up a list of things that I think are wonderful about her. A list that lets me reminisce and rediscover some gems that I have not listened to in years. A list that makes one look at the big picture.

Here is my list of the best metal albums of the decade that will be over soon. It took me a while to create but don't focus too much on the list's order, please. I think of it more as a list of 100 essential albums of this decade.

Oh and by the way, the next decade actually starts in 2011.

That only depends on what school of thought you belong to

Care to elaborate?

Pleased to see Tool, Mastodon, Cephalic, Suffo, Exodus, Deicide, Candle, Cryptopsy & QotSA. (lol the last one, quite possibly my fav is on my favourite number)

Surprised positively by Samael, neutrally by Sodom, and negatively by AiC, but these three/outer two are probably prejudiced. I heard AiC's first new song and thought it was average, but nearly everyone seems to think this album is fantastic. Is it one of those like Songs for the Deaf where it's very consistent and stacked with great songs?

edit - was definitely not expecting to see Alice Cooper in any of these sorts of lists, either. Also, shouldn't it be noughts, unless you're regretting the whole ten years?

Regarding the decade debate:
We use the Gregorian calendar, which does not have a year zero. It goes straight from 1 BC to 1 AD. This goes against common sense since the passage of time is indeed always measured beginning with 0; however, we are stuck with this calendar unless some world-wide authority reforms it. Therefore, since the calendar starts at 1, the first decade actually lasted from 1 to 11, not from 1 to 10, which is just nine years.

So yeah, Marcel is quite right that according to common sense, the calendar should start at 0 but in the system that we are actually using, it is simply incorrect to say that a decade ends at 0.

As for "naughts" - either spelling is actually correct. Both mean zero.

I've seen both oughts and naughts. clearly we should focus more on what to call the decade than the albums released over the past 10 years....

An album released in 1990 would generally not be considered an '80's album'. So for the sake of convienience, I think the aforementioned "common sense" attitude regarding when decades stop and begin is probably preferable to that of the pedant who insists a new decade starts on a '1'..

A pleasant surprise to see Paradise Lost and Rotting Christ in there.

Hmm, I never bothered to check out Confederacy Of Ruined Lives, but I love the previous two Eyehategod albums, so I'll download it when I get home... if I still have a computer lol

Good to see Anaal Nathrakh here twice. I put Eschaton in my top 5, and three other albums by the same band made it as well.

I'm surprised to not see NIN's The Slip in your list because I thought it was one of your favorites. Personally I think it blows away Year Zero, but lots of people think otherwise it seems.

Nice list!

This is actually an astonishing list, I can't count how many of those would appear on a list of my own.

Particularly surprised to see WHOURKR up there, I'm a great lover of Gautier Serre's other project Igorrr, 'Moisissure' still holds the title of my favourite album of '09 (beating Esoteric with ease). I'm not even sure I've heard an album that beats it since.
