Easily their best album. A shame they lightened their sound after this one and watered down some of the darker, heavier parts.

I didn't expect an album with such an ugly cover art to sound this magical
I'm intrigued after listening to the first two songs - I'll have to listen to the rest some time...

you know what they say, "do not judge a book by it's cover".
A groundbreaking album when it came it, still relevant today.

This is an epic, beautiful masterpiece of music! The choir and orchestra are implemented expertly to create this mystical, middle-eastern tone, layered by elegant keyboard playing and heavy guitar riffs!

This album showcases what I love about metal: that within this genre there can be so much diversity, that there can exist bands like Black Sabbath, Slayer, Emperor, and Therion, creating completely different styles of music - yet all uniting under the banner of metal!

The consecutive tracks "To Mega Therion", "Cults of the Shadow", "The Desert of Set", and "Nightside of Eden" create an unforgettable experience as they tell of a great serpent awakening with an incredible performance by the choir and all the instruments! After an instrumental interlude comes the weakest song "Invocation of Naamah". But, this drop is immediately rectified by the absolutely beautiful song "The Siren of the Woods" (sung in Akkadian, an extinct language of Mesopotamia!) and the concluding epic instrumental!

A unique metal performance that everyone needs to have experienced at least once!

That's Dan Swano's melodic voice at 2:12 on "In the Desert of Set", right? Man, another example of Swano being part of a musical masterpiece.

you know what they say, "do not judge a book by it's cover".

What is strange is that Johnsson had collaborated with Kristian Wahlin, my favorite metal artist, on three previous studio albums. By the year 1996 Kristian had a bunch of fantastic covers for now-legendary outputs so "Theli" could and should be one of them. I wonder what was the logic behind decision to ditch him for a band's breakthrough work. I vaguely remember that CGI was a "thing" back then, maybe that's why.
