Insomnium - Guitarist Ville Vänni Leaves The Band

Insomnium have announced that guitarist Ville Vänni will leave the band after the two Finnish shows in Joensuu and Helsinki. He will be replaced by Markus Vanhala from Omnium Gatherum, who will join as a full-time member.

Here it is the message from Ville, taken from the band's website: "Dear all, time is now ripe to share the news about line-up changes in the Insomnium camp. With a heavy heart I have reached the decision to resign from Insomnium. The decision is mutual and final, and there is no big drama behind it."

"During the last year I have found myself in a limbo of constant lack of time and impossible schedules. Combining a general surgeon's career with a busy metal band like Insomnium has already taken years of precise timing, and the candle has been burning from both ends for years now. At the same time, Insomnium has grown bigger demanding more and more time. As a result, I have gradually come to a painful realization that I can not meet the needs of this roller coaster ride any more."

"This decision was hard to make and accept for all of us. Insomnium has been like a family and the band mates have been (and will still remain) my best and closest friends. For not being able to give my 100% would only be letting them down. The reason why this decision is made flesh right now is that I will not be able to attend the One For Sorrow European tour. My wife is due to give birth to our first son and it is my responsibility, duty and choice to be home at that time. I will play two first shows in Finland and then bid farewell."

"However, the burden of this decision is lightened by the fact that Insomnium will go on and even grow stronger after my retirement. Markus Vanhala from Omnium Gatherum will take my place as a full-time guitarist in Insomnium. He is a good friend and an excellent musician and has already been replacing me and Ville F. on several occasions. Thank you Niilo, Ville and Markus for a decade of good times and a lifetime of friendship and unforgettable memories. And thank you all Insomnium fans, it is you who made this all possible! See you on the coming shows!"

[Also thanks to Kintu and pisymbol for sending in this news!]

Likewise. Reminds me of the day I found out Yanic Bercier (former Quo Vadis drummer) is a paramedic.

So I guess it's too bad the band made it as big as they did...otherwise he wouldn't be conflicted. :/

Definately! That was pretty surprising actually. Imagine going in for a consultation and the guitarist from insomnium is your surgeon haha, that would be pretty epic. too bad i live in the states..

Anyway i wonder how involved in the writing process he was.. does anyone know?

a lot of the time in melodeath the guitarist is the main writer, so this is a lil concerning. also ive never been a huge fan of omnium either. Insomnium is one of fave bands so i hope this isnt a negative change.

I'm just imagining him as a guest star on House MD. That would be so damn epic

He didn't write that much, at least on the last two. He came up with some of the riffs in "Song of the Blackest Bird" and wrote the most of "Into the Woods". Vanhala writes more than him in comparison.

Imagining the scene:
House playing some blues riffs on his guitar.
Enter Ville with the patient's report.
Ville spots guitar in House's hands.
Pulls of some signature ESP or some shit out of nowhere and says:
"Bitch please".

Yea, ive been tryin to look it up and from wat i can see, while every member contributes at least some, it seems Friman, the other guitarist writes most of the material.
Still, it kinda sucks to see him go.

Best episode ever... During the ep House and Ville conversate and stumble upon the topic of fate and destiny. Ville argues with him that fate is real and some things are more than coincidence while House, not surprisingly, bashes the idea and chalks it up to nothing more than superstition and blind faith..

later in the ep....
The patient needs extreme emergency heart transplant surgery that only someone with the finger dexterity to play melodic death metal leads could pull off! But Ville is off the clock playing a show with his band insomnium! In need of Villes skills House and team decide to rush the dying patient to the metal show. with minimal time Ville has no choice but to perform the Heart Transplant surgery right onstage, while his band continues to perform. The crowd cheers on Ville, convinced this is a planned part of the death metal show. With only seconds to spare Ville successfully completes the heart transplant simultaniously hitting the last guitar note of the song...

After the concert House striked up a conversation with Ville "So, you call that fate. The time we need you most your were busy playing a concert, and you were just barely able to save this persons life." says House. Ville replies "That may be true... but the song were playing when you arrived... it was called 'Change of Heart'" - House MD hhahaha
