Forces Of Metal 2012 - Festival Cancelled

It has recently been announced that the two-day metal event Forces Of Metal, taking place on June 8th-9th in The Netherlands and boasting such as acts as Sonata Arctica, Kamelot, Dark Funeral and Draconian has unfortunately been cancelled for reasons which remain undisclosed. In a short public letter posted on the festival's website, the organisers had this to say: "It is with a heavy heart that we have to inform you that Forces Of Metal 2012 will not take place. We've tried; tried hard, but to no avail."

"Certain events, starting in December 2011, have caused a downward spiral from which we could not recover. We've considered alternatives. None of which seemed to do any justice to our initial plans or to your expectations."

"We are proud, though. Proud of the bands we've booked and the effort they have put into our festival. Proud of all the people who believed in our cause and shared our dreams. Very proud, indeed, of those who purchased tickets, even when things went pear shaped. Additionally, we understand that some of you had questions and critique when pivotal acts cancelled. We thank you all, most sincerely."

"Is this the end? Will there be a Forces Of Metal 2013? Really, we don't know. It's too early to tell. The dream hasn't died, though! Those of you who have questions are welcome to visit our website www.forcesofmetal.com or contact us directly via info@forcesofmetal.com. A battle is lost, the war continues! Yours sincerely, Forces Of Metal"

I'll bet my bottom dollar marcel and his crusade against flower metal had something to do with this...

It's not that I don't appreciate the effort these guys put into setting up a festival but, there are already too many festivals plus a lot of Dutch people go to cheaper countries for festivals. It's simply way to expensive to organize a festival here. Take Fortarock for example, costs around 55 euro for 1 day, Brutal Assault costs you 57 euro for 3 days. Holland isn't the best country for festivals any more, it's a shame but shit happens.

I've been living in the Netherlands myself for a while already, so I can second that. Even gigs here are quite expensive, let alone whole festivals...

Well people probably have the money but also have the option to see the same bands and more at a different (mostly larger festival) somewhere in Germany or Belgium or further towards central and eastern Europe. This also makes for a good vacation as well. If you wanna get people to come to a festival in Holland put some insanely big names on the flyer like: Metallica, Iron Maiden, Slayer and/orSlipknot, after that make sure they don't play anywhere near the Dutch border and create a 3 days festival or 2, at least more than 1. Provide camping area, include the camp price with the ticket, do not exceed 130 euros of entree money for 3 days.

Problem: costs for setting this up is too damn high here due to bureaucracy and other bullshit, so this entree price can hardly be attained and would be closer to 150 or 170 for 3 days with such headliners.

What is comes down to is this: Dutch people are cheap, but generally don't mind to travel a but more. Meaning when travel costs plus entree ticket are still lower or equal to only an entree ticket price a lot of Dutch prefer to leave the country and add a vacation or something to the festival weekend.

Sorry for the long text xD
