Opeth + Anathema - Leeds, England, 15.11.12 by Talie Eigeland (16)

Touring with Opeth is a big deal. Even though some followers have recently chosen to unfollow after the band's last album, it will forever remain an enormously big deal. Apparently, some are here as much for Anathema as they are for Opeth. Their music is now distinctly softer than it used to be and though I'm not sure pairing the two bands makes entire sense, Anathema are good, so it'll do.

As per, Opeth's members have moustaches in various stages of Movember. We're in fear of excessive prog, what with only one kick drum on stage and lots of proggy interval music, but let me reassure you that the concert is kick-ass so don't snob this tour on account of any previous issues with Heritage. Turns out you might come round to at least some of it, and while the opening song is off the latest album, they only play one other from that disc and, controversy ahoy, it's groovy.

We get "Deliverance", "power ballad"/"the one that was supposed to be a hit single but that nobody liked" i.e. "Burden" and some other classics, along with a couple of less expected songs that we thought we'd never see live again. You know when you sometimes find the end of "Deliverance" a bit long-lasting? Well, it's really not. 10 songs, full two-hour show. When Mikael says it's going to be experimental, that's your next 25 minutes called for. People want "Demon Of The Fall" but Opeth say it's been done to death and apparently Mendez, before the encore, said no fucking requests. However it is pointed out that London might be surprised the night after, so let's wait and see, yes?

Setlist: The Devil's Orchard / Ghost of Perdition / White Cluster / Hope Leaves / Burden / Deliverance / Hessian Peel / Famine / Reverie/Harlequin Forest / Blackwater Park

And Blackwater Park!

I would kill to be able to see that show. Anathema and Opeth with that setlist... Lucky Brits.

Ghost of Perdition, White Cluster, Deliverance and Blackwater Park... What ever they played besides those songs wouldn't matter... that would be a great experience.

I can't wait to finally see them for the very first time on 29th Nov!

This setlist is amazing. I wish I could've seen them with this setlist a year ago in 013. They then played only the "soft/mellow" songs from most albums (so no songs with any grunts) but also a lot from Heritage (not surprisingly since it was just released weeks before the concert). That show was also about 2 hours though, so it was a great lengthy show still. Blackwater Park as a closure song fits very nicely obviously.

They're very good on stage. I've seen them 3 times now and each time was great. Mikael's a very funny guy by the way, which you'll find out when you have seen them live at least once. He could basically be a stand-up comedian if you ask me.

I'm familiar with Mikael's sense of humor as I own all their DVDs but yeah, it shall be interesting and since it's in Malmö, let's see how his jokes come out in swedish.

Anathema were excellent as usual!

Opeth were kinda boring and Mikael battled with the growls. They were soft and drowned out by the music but his cleans were good. Better setlist than I expected but I just didn't enjoy their performance again. Maybe its just the other bands I've seen this year are better live, who knows!

I was considering going to see them in Portsmouth, but the deficiencies in public transport put paid to that. How I wish they'd chosen the better south coast city, Ghost Of Perdition, Hope Leaves, White Cluster, Deliverance and Blackwater Park is a mindblowingly good setlist

Last time I saw Opeth live they played Heritage in its entirety and only 2 other old songs.

Akerfeldt was a snob on stage and it was terrible.

Saw them here in Dublin last week, they only played two songs from heritage. I missed the anathema show thought so I can't comment on that.
