The Ocean - Gets Reprimanded By Summer Slaughter Tour Organizer

File this one under the category: "if you don't have something nice to say, don't say it at all".

A couple days ago, The Ocean made a Facebook comment about not being allowed to jump of the stages in some venues on the Summer Slaughter Tour. No big deal, apparently the rules are not as strict in Europe - moving on ... or so we thought.

Quote:
what are these stupid "no jumping into the crowd" rules on a tour which gloats about being the "most extreme tour of the year", seriously? I don't get it. This is the 5fth night in a row that we can't go into the crowd because of stupid agency or venue policies. I'm getting bored. Someone tell these dumbfucks that stage diving doesn't kill people, and that stage barriers and 6 foot ditches won't stop us from leaping into the crowd, they just make the leap a little longer and a little more dangerous for everyone. Someone also tell them that fans know what to expect when they see The Dillinger Escape Plan or The Ocean live. If you are worried about your make up, don't be in the first row!!!

This morning, the organizer of the Summer Slaughter Tour publicly called The Ocean out and basically told them to stop whining and - quote: "... focus on being appreciative of the opportunity you have been given to play your music in front of thousands of people opening for some other great bands instead..."

Of course the shit storm started happening right away with people having strong opinions on either side of the issue. Of course no one wants an incident like what happened to the fan during the Lamb Of God gig a couple of years ago, but on the other hand, it's still up to the individual venues to allow stage diving or not.

The Summer Slaughter Tour Facebook:
I'm a bit offended by The Ocean's recent Facebook post jabbing Summer Slaughter and some of the venues that are willing to host it so let me set the record straight.

Summer Slaughter is called "The Most Extreme Tour Of The Year" because of the music. It's the only tour that puts 10 national acts who play progressive, extreme music all on one stage inside a club during the summer in North America. It's not called this because of bands doing vintage stage antics.

Iggy Pop and Jim Morrison were jumping off stages in to the crowd before you guys ever picked up an instrument. Jumping off things at a venue doesn't make you extreme, it makes you dangerous. Sure it's a cool thing to watch if no one gets hurt, who doesn't love eye candy? But the reality is people get injured, paralyzed or in rare cases die from this and therefore certain venues at these capacity levels will not allow it. This is usually because of past lawsuits or ones that are still pending verdicts/settlements. It's not the opening band who's going to end up footing the bill for the kid when their parents sue for a million dollars for damages, it's the venue. So next time you start whining about not being allowed to be "extreme" enough on Summer Slaughter, focus on being appreciative of the opportunity you have been given to play your music in front of thousands of people opening for some other great bands instead.

If you still really think your music and live performance simply will not be properly conveyed because you can't jump off shit, then do it where other people don't have to catch you and risk getting hurt. Land that move and go back on stage to finish your vocal line. That's extreme. Or maybe you go on tour with Bad Luck 13 Riot Extravaganza and find a new definition for what you consider extreme at a show. I invited you to play because I appreciate your music, so start appreciating the venues and people who are making it possible for you to be here. While you keep taking notes from Dillinger on stage, be sure to take them off stage too. They carry their our own tour/liability insurance. Might want to look in to that bud.

P.S. Mick Foley getting thrown off the top of a steel cage by The Undertaker at Hell In A Cell and taking a 16 foot fall is far more extreme and just as scripted as your next stage dive.

While I do understand the Tour Organizer's point, I think there would have been a better way to present it. A spat on Facebook sure does seem a bit childish to me. Well, the tour is winding down with only a couple days left, so if you happen to go - please make sure you are safe, since The Dillinger Escape Plan does those "vintage stage antics" the Organizers talked about. (check out the pictures from their San Fransisco show).

Stage diving doesn't kill people, stage diving into a raging pit can, stage diving into the void of the crowd can if there's no one there to catch your princess ass! I with the promoters on this one...even though I never am! Stage diving is annoying anyway...do people really think I paid whatever amount of money to catch people? I let you fall...

I went to exodus the other day, and rob dukes essentially told security to fuck off and let their fans do what they want to do, and it is a heavy gig, so you know, thats the sacrafice you make if your going is that there are going to be others who want to get fucked up.

Maybe not the most appropriate way to present it, but I thinkthe response by the Summer Slaughter rep is pretty much bang on.

Response from the tour organizer is totally right. Whiny ass band man, acting as though without stage diving there is no reason to play a show.

I do agree with the "stay out of the front row" mentality because that's me, I go to shows to watch the band play, not get in the pit or stage dive or have to hold up some drunken or amped up dudes and dudettes who want to crowd surf, so I stay off to the side more towards the back to avoid that shit. But I still agree with the venues that want safety first since they're the ones who will get the shit thrown at them if somebody gets hurt because they allowed stage diving and crowd surfing. So imo The Ocean are being rather dick-ish in this case for not respecting the venues decision to cover their asses from potential lawsuits since way too many people here in America are way too quick to try to sue someone to make a quick buck.

I didn't realize these guys were German, for some reason was thinking they were American, makes more sense now. Not sure how shit works over in Europe, but over here in America too many people are so fucking greedy and stupid that they would get hurt trying to do stage dives and crowd surfing, and then either they (or their parents or families) WOULD sue (or at least TRY REAL FUCKING HARD to sue) the venue for LETTING that person do something that common sense should have already told them was potentially harmful to their health/physical well-being.

Americans, unfortunately, are all too quick to pass the blame off on someone else rather own up to their fuck ups and take responsibility for making up their own mind to do something stupid and/or dangerous. And those same Americans, when they decide to pass that blame off on somebody else, they are all too quick to get the legal system involved so that they can get "that money that is 'rightfully owed' to them" because "it's about the principal, not the money".

So more power to these venues for being intelligent enough to want to safeguard themselves from the average greedy, stupid Americans that WILL try to exploit those venues with their stupidity.

I get where you're coming from, and I agree that those worried about getting hurt should just stay out of the front rows. And yes people will purposely do stupid shit and get themselves hurt and abuse the system, but these safeguards still need to be in place for those who are harmed by accident not due to their own fault.

For those who don't frequent concerts often, or just a poorly timed crowd dive etc. from the band or another guest; if the result is such that a person is unable to perform their job, for a time, or permanently, there are instances where some people should be entitled to financial compensation. Obviously, 90% of the time this is not the case, but you can't have a double standard in the law, so to me it makes sense to simply hold the venues liable and thus the venues can prohibit the behavior in turn and simply discourage/eliminate the potential for injury all-together. It's unfortunate for those who enjoy this kind of stuff, but the only other real workaround would be to get everyone to sign waivers that they cannot sue the venue for damages which would likely end up subjecting concert-goers to even more risk. I honestly think everyone is simply better off because of this, even if it is only a fraction of instances where someone "innocent" and not acting in their own stupidity ends up being hurt.

Oh I'm not arguing that the venues should not be held liable, nor am I arguing that some people get legitimately hurt on accident. My statement is about those morons that will get themselves hurt intentionally, or unintentionally, but should be smart enough to know that it was their decision to jump off the stage and hope that enough people felt like catching them and they shouldn't hold that against the venue if not enough people wanted to catch them; and then those people want to try to sue the venue for their own stupidity.

The people who get legitimately hurt because the venue let some drunken moron jump off the stage and kick or head butt them in the face in the process definitely deserve some compensation. And if the venue has strict no stage diving/crowd surfing rules, then those accidenatlly injured people are less liekly to try to sue the venue, and will hopefully try to sue the asshole that broke the rules instead. So the venues saying "no stage diving and no crowd surfing" are doiong the right thing by trying to safeguard themselves from those drunken morons hurting innocent bystanders who were there to watch the show, not get rowdy and roughed up.
