Uldreth's 2013 List

Uldreth is good at deciding what he likes and what he does not, but is terrible at setting a definitive order at them. So all albums in this list are ordered alphabetically. All albums included are positives and the degree of their positivity is measured by stars.

1. 65daysofstatic - Wild Light
Math Rock/Post-Rock ** - Pretty tame compared to the craziness of some of 65's earlier outputs, but really really great mathy post-rock nontheless. Tracks to check out: Prisms, Unmake The Wild Light.
2. After The Burial - Wolves Within
Sumeriancore ** - Veil of Maya hasn't dropped their new album yet, but if the one track they released is any indication, there is an identity crisis going on in Sumerian Records. So it's a bit surprising that the new ATB actually sounds like ATB and ATB proves they are the best band ever at being ATB! Tracks to check out: Disconnect, Of Fearful Men.
3. August Burns Red - Rescue & Restore
Technical/Progressive Metalcore *** - Funny how I can only evaluate this album as "August Burns Red doing what ABR does best" yet every ABR album has quite some bits of differences. This is perhaps the most well realized incarnation of the sound and approach they have been brewing since Constellations. Tracks to check out: Provisions, Spirit Breaker, Creative Captivity.
4. Bad Religion - True North
Melodic Hardcore * - Actually this was my first exposure to this band. Decent but I don't have anything else to say.
5. Barrow - Though I'm Alone
Post-Hardcore *** - Very worthy followup to the absolutely insane "Being Without". Album seems to be more coherent but with less immediate standouts. Tracks to check out: Fed (Chocking, Retching), Dogwood.
6. The Black Dahlia Murder - Everblack
Technical Melodic Death Metal/Metalcore *** - Surprisingly, this harkens back to Nocturnal quite a bit, while retaining the technicality they attained after receiving Ryan from Arsis. Might be my favourite TBDM since their At The Gates/Prayer For Cleansing worshipping early materials. Also did I hear phantasms or Every Rope A Noose was quite hardcore punkish?! Tracks to check out: Phantom Limb Masturbation, Every Rope A Noose, Their Beloved Absentee, Map Of Scars. Damn consitent album by the way.
7. Born Of Osiris - Tomorrow We Die ∆live
Sumeriancore * - A definite step down from The Discovery, this album is still good, but the loss of Jason is very much felt. The album is overrun with a ridiculous amount of djunz and is mostly saved by the awesome keyboards that create sublime atmospheres. Oh and they are for some reason obsessed with the L∆pl∆ci∆n. Tracks to check out: Exhilarate, Illusionist.
8. Breakdown Of Sanity - Perception
Metalcore ** - Despite my absolute love for metalcore, I don't really like the so-called "moshcore". This album however... I'd say this is a perfect example of something being very derivative on a stylistic level but being innovative on an execution level. Despite the MASSIVE overabundance of chugs, the band manages to keep it exciting and fresh by varying the guitar tone frequently, as well as often complementing the breakdowns with atmospheric sections that work way better in reality than they sound on paper. Tracks to check out: The Writer, Hero, Scissorhands, Chapters.
9. Bring Me The Horizon - Sempiternal
Post-Hardcore/Synthpop/Idunnowhatthehellthisis * - Not really metal. But really good nontheless. Builds on BMTH's third album, as well as influences from synthpop and post-rock. Tracks to check out: And The Snakes Start To Sing, Empire (Let Them Sing), Hospital For Souls.
10. Burial - Rival Dealer
Dubstep/Future Garage ** - Fairly standard release for Burial, which means it is still awesome compared to everything else!
11. Circles - Infinitas
Djent ** - Good but perhaps standard djent with electronics. Tracks to check out: As It Is Above, Ground Shift.
12. City In The Sea - Below The Noise
Melodic Metalcore ** - Embodies most tendencies of modern-day "scene metalcore" yet somehow manages to be way more captivating and powerful than that. Tracks to check out: Dead Beliefs, Discovering Oceans.
13. Cloudkicker - Subsume
Math/Post-Metal ** - Contains both quite heavy, mathy parts, as well as sublime texture-based post-parts. Overall feels like a collection of Ben Sharp's previous styles. Tracks to check out: Any. The long one seemed the most standout.
14. Counterparts - The Difference Between Hell And Home
Metalcore/Melodic Hardcore *** - Sounds more like Prophets than Current, which is a good thing, also this being better than the new Misery Signals by a slight margin means the apprentice outdid the master. Tracks to check out: Outlier, Witness, Compass.
15. A Day To Remember - Common Courtesy
Pop-Punk/Metalcore ** Uldreth ya srs? Ye I srs. Best ADTR since For Those Who Have Heart, but doesn't got shit on the new Silverstein. Tracks to check out: Right Back At It Again, Sometimes You're The Hammer Sometimes You Are The Nail, Violence, This Document Speaks For Itself.
16. Deafheaven - Sunbather
Blackgaze/Screamo *** - I'm dying. - Is it blissful? - It's like a dream. - I want to dream. Tracks to check out: Dream House, The Pecan Tree.
17. The Devil Wears Prada - 8:18
Electronic Metalcore ** - Darker and more mature than previous TDWP outings. Less breakdown-heavy with some really brooding synth atmosphere often taking over the songs. Clean vocals massively improved. This is TDWP's coming-of-age album. Tracks to check out: 8:18, Sailor's Prayer, Care More, Transgress.
18. The Dillinger Escape Plan - One Of Us Is The Killer
Mathcore *** - Scizophrenic, crazy, harsh, accessible, dissonant, melodic, LETHAL etc etc. Tracks to check out: All of them.
19. Heaven Shall Burn - Veto
Metalcore, German Version *** - HSB just casually released the best album of their career. Tracks to check out: Land of the Upright Ones, You Will Be Godless.
20. Humanity's Last Breath - Humanity's Last Breath
Deathcore/Djent * - Vildhjarta worshipping Vildhjartacore, pretty filthy.
21. Killswitch Engage - Disarm The Descent
Melodic Metalcore * - Comeback album of sorts, enjoyable but nothing special. Tracks to check out: The New Awakening, In Due Time.
22. Living Sacrifice - Ghost Thief
Alternative Thrash Metal ** - Quite awesome alternative thrash in the vein of God Forbid/Shadows Fall, and also I fucking love the album artwork. Tracks to check out: Screwtape, Ghost Thief, Mask.
23. Misery Signals - Absent Light
Progressive Metalcore/Melodic Hardcore *** - A step down from Controller, but still haunting, emotive, aggressive, beautiful and powerful. New Counterparts is slightly better though. Tracks to check out: Luminary, Carrier, Departure.
24. Nails - Abandon All Life
Powerviolence/Grindcore/Death Metal *** - Holy shit! Tracks to check out: This is like 17 minutes, are you fucking kidding me?
25. The Ocean - Pelagial
Post-Metal/Sludgecore *** - Another release that absolutely delivers. The album progresses from sludgy hardcore/metalcore to post-metal (though don't expect Aeolian-like madness) smoothly through the album's run. Tracks to check out: Bathyalpelagic II: The Wish in Dreams, Abyssopelagic II: Signals of Anxiety, Hadopelagic II: Let Them Believe, Demersal: Cognitive Dissonance.
26. Oh, Sleeper - The Titan
Post-Hardcore/Metalcore ** - Sounds a lot like the continuation of Children of Fire. Tracks to check out: Heavy Hands, The Rise
27. Ovid's Withering - Scryers Of The Ibis
Symphonic Deathcore *** - Just really really damn good. Symphonic elements are perfectly integrated, and there is also a healthy dosage of djent that actually sounds pretty good here.
28. Protest The Hero - Volition
Progressive Metal(core) ** - I miss the -core from this. But aside from that, perhaps best PTH since Kezia. Tracks to check out: Drum-Head Trial, Underbite.
29. Rosetta - The Anaesthete
Post-Metal ** - Standard Rosetta fare so not much to say here. I like it more than ADoM but doesn't touch Gallilean. Tracks to check out: Oku/The Secrets, Hodoku/Compassion, Ku/Emptiness
30. Sadistik - Flowers For My Father
Abstract Hip-Hop *** - An extremely unusual hip-hop album, with an unusual concept as well. Displays a level of emotion and human vulnerability that is very-very rarely shown in this genre. Tracks to check out: Petrichor, Russian Roulette, Melancholia.
31. Silverstein - This Is How The Wind Shifts
Post-Hardcore *** - Silverstein was always quite good and mature in this subgenre of pop-punk/post-hardcore hybrids but this last album is quite mature even by their standards. Aside from excellent songwriting, the album has some additional perks, such as the two title tracks can be synchronised (think Galilean Satellites) as well as all tracks on the album are thematically bound with a pair. Tracks to check out: In A Place of Solace, In Silent Seas We Drown, On Brave Mountains We Conquer, To Live And Lose, With Second Chances, Massachusetts.
32. TesseracT - Altered State
Djent ** - Ditched the harsh vocals and is more proggy than previous outings. Tracks to check out: Nocturne, Embers.
33. Thy Art Is Murder - Hate
Technical Deathcore ** - Taaaasteful! Tracks to check out: Reign of Darkness, Dead Sun.
34. Vildhjarta - Thousands Of Evils
Djent ** - Sounds quite different from Masstaden, yet the creepy/dark aesthetics remain. Tracks to check out: Längstmedån, Dimman, Mist förståndet.

Hard Rock/Heavy Metal

Sumeriancore? amazing.

It's a joke term invented for those half-technical, half-progressive djent-infused deathcore bands on Sumerian Records, like Born of Osiris or Veil of Maya .

Btw, I don't have that much time for music these days (hence the relatively low genre-variance of my listens) but I could use some recs, not just from the genres I featured here but also good post-metal, tech death or avant-black. I am especially a bit outdated on recent post-metal so could go well with some of the latest buzzalbums from the genre.

Well lemme see what I can suggest. Probably Wolveserpent's new album, good funeral/drone/doom stuff.

I'll check it. Don't think I've heard about any drone this year yet so will come in handy.
