Excited for this album! like the song

I'm not a connoisseur of Epica's music but I like this song. The riff is catchy and the changes in the song make it interesting.

Back to DYU sound.

Not quite, in my opinion. This time around it seems Mark is finally getting some juice out of his Mesa Boogie -although who knows if he even used that amp in studio. Nevertheless, guitars sound bigger now... and Simone's voice sounds tinnier.

I enjoy the music and the artwork as the background is lovely but I find that the lyrics being thrown at the foreground and the camera constantly snapping to a different direction is too jarring. A slower or more graceful/softer method of displaying the lyrics would have been much more visually appealing. Maybe its just me but the bold stark letters being pulled to the screen just seem to detract from the music (it fits the harsher vocals but the light and choral vocals don't make me envision bold capital letters).

I quite like it. And I'm not even an Epica fan.

Now that's a useful comment.

Come on guys, Epica has a lot of really awesome lyrics ! Mark has a master in psychology, and this is obvious when you read songs like "Façade of Reality".
There are lots of social criticism, and it's good to have a "Female fronted band" in which the lyrics are not "la la la, I'm a princess and I have butterflies in my hair but I lost my beautiful prince and I'm so so sad, la la la..." !

Besides, I needed to listen twice to this song to like it. The guitars are surprising, far away from they're precedent release (which I enjoyed a lot by the way, unlike a lot of people !). But it's good, I can't wait to listen to the full release !

Yes but just because your a social critic doesnt automatically make your lyrics good. I respect Jansen tremendously and think he is virtuosic as far as Instrumentation goes but Epica's lyrics are far too preachy and often just come off tacky.

Imo Social criticism in art should be more subtle, put the art first and the intentions second. Plus, Jansen takes his social criticism too far, the other day on his FB page he shared an article about an initiative to put RFID chips in EU babies by some date 2014, an article that was listed as "hoax" on the webpage publishing it... He buys into a lot of crap..

As far as female-fronted bands, There are plenty that sing about non-butterfly-princessy stuff. Arch Enemy, Arkona, Amaranthe, Nightwish to name a few. Which reminds me, Nightwish's "Creek's Mary Blood" is a perfect example of how to incorporate social critique into lyrics. The lyrics are beautiful in their own right but go beyond by illuminating the tragedy of Europeans populating America.

Anyway, its all a matter of opinion so to each his/her own but that's what I find wrong with Epica's lyrics.

Maybe I misunderstand them, but Nigthwish's lyrics seem to me more about love and stuff like that, than really profound. But you're right, "Creek's Mary Blood" is a good song, with a real social critique in it, to me it doesn't represent a lot of Nigthwish's songs, and maybe I'm wrong. I 'll have to read them more carefully, as English is not my mother tongue, I may not get every messages there are in them !
As you say, it's possible that the way Tuomas write his songs is less accessible (or more subtle) than Mark's (or Simone's, as she is writting too). And maybe, somewhere, the fact that I agree with some of Epica's messages make them more accessible to me !

@ Azarath : I must confess, I thought a lot about Within Temptation while I was writting this ! Even if I enjoy a lot of what they did (particulary in Mother Earth), a lot of their songs gave me that "poor princess" feeling !
