Metallica - Launch Reissue Project With 'No Life 'Til Leather' Cassette

Remember the 1982 No Life 'Til Leather demo? And cassettes? Well, Metallica will celebrate this year's "Record Store Day" with the release of an exact duplication of the band's 1982 demo tape as a limited-edition cassette on April 18th. The artwork was made from Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich's own copy and will feature his handwriting. At the time, the group consisted of vocalist/guitarist James Hetfield, lead guitarist Dave Mustaine (Megadeth), bassist Ron McGovney and drummer Ulrich. Some of the songs from this demo became classics of the band and all but "The Mechanix" would appear on their debut Kill 'Em All.

Says Metallica in a statement: "In 1982 we recorded seven songs that became our initial calling card known as No Life 'Til Leather, and it led us to our first record deal... the rest, as you some of you may know, is history!"

"We've been digging through the archives, gone to the original source material and re-mastered it to maximize the sound potential for 2015 without altering the original mixes in any way. Recorded with the first line-up of the band that appeared live as Metallica, No Life 'Til Leather has never been commercially available until now. Look for expanded versions coming on CD, vinyl and a collector's set sometime this summer. We hope you enjoy this little walk down memory lane with us and that you will continue to join us in supporting independent record stores around the world."

Metallica has remastered the original tapes for the reissue. The release is part of a new series of upcoming reissues, since the band now operates their own label (Blackened Recordings) and owns the master recordings to their catalogue.

Tracklisting:
  • Hit The Lights
  • The Mechanix
  • Motorbreath
  • Seek & Destroy
  • Metal Militia
  • Jump In The Fire
  • Phantom Lord

Recorded on July 6th, 1982 at Chateau East Studio, Tustin, CA.

Please tell me they are not going to flatten the sound levels in the same way that death Magnetic was

If you need more info on this look up the loudness wars and guitar hero vs released album versions. Yes the guitar hero was actually better then the released album version since the dynamic rage was not flattened anywhere near as much

I love the detail of "turn down bass on amp" ahah

This takes me back to a time I listened to cassettes, it was mostly Portuguese teen girl bands at the time. It's funny to see some bands reissuing stuff now on cassettes. Is it coming back or something?

My cassette collection went up to about 150 cassettes, and all looked a lot like the one pictured here, with the tracklisting and the band logo.

Considering some of the pointless sprawls of comps and live albums that some of the bigger names (Metallica included) are prone to pumping out, this is the kind of thing worth digging up and releasing. Can't say I've ever particularly cared for demos but as long as the remaster doesn't screw up the sound (I'll let people with some sense of the original be the judges) I might give this a listen.

I hope this extends to AJFA and, to a lesser extent, Ride The Lightning.

There is a reason the cassette died. Several, actually. I'm glad there's a CD coming.

lol I guess it was already in the back of his mind I love that album. I remember I learnt all the riffs on guitar when I was younger. Not like you could hear the bass...

Why did they use a picture of a hometaped version of the demo and not the original demo cover?

Why? Other than a cash grab for a new edition there's no reason to reissue AJFA.

But many fans don't have No Life Til Leather.

AJFA is my absolute favorite album and considering the lack of bass on the album, it would be nice for the fans. I guess I'm not the only one to wish this.

Except that the cassette never actually died.

I don't understand the current boner people have for cassettes. It's not like vinyl where you have different sound qualities than CDs that appeal to a lot of people (that "warmness" of sound that CDs can't replicate). Cassette quality was often shit even for top end releases.

I was glad to offload all my cassettes in late-1990s.

a lot of people enjoy cassettes because they are loads cheaper than vinyl or cd. Btw almost all cassettes come with a download code.
