Amorphis - New Album In September, Heads For Studio

Later this year, Amorphis will be heading out on tour with Nightwish and Arch Enemy but they have more tricks up their sleeve. In fact, you can expect the band's new album pretty soon, around September. The Finns started off the year by demoing new songs for their upcoming 12th studio album and will start pre-production this March in Helsinki with producer Jens Bogren. The album recordings will begin in April at Bogren's Fascination Street Studio in Stockholm. What will they bring to the table on their next album? We will have to wait and see.

The lyrics are written by Amorphis's spiritual mentor Pekka Kainulainen. He shared: "Like Kalevala, they are descriptions of natural phenomena, seasons and the human mind. Reoccurring situations where hope and uncertainty alternate. Attempting to gain advice from higher powers. The poems do not form a complete story per se, but they are drawn together by a certain theme. We live under a red cloud and once again, time weighs us."

This past December, Amorphis completed a successful Central European "Retro" tour where the band played their legendary Tales From The Thousand Lakes album in its entirety to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the record. As a special treat for the fans, the group also played songs from their debut album, which they haven't played in more than two decades.

More of the same, I would guess. Amorphis have been treading silent waters since 2007. They used to be such an innovative, ever-evolving band but haven't had any new ideas for a long time it seems.

I completely disagree, Skyforger and Circle are great albums!

Yeah it should be like the previous one, but Amorphis is one of the few bands that may not have still their best moments but they produce quality stuff. No one can disagree.

Honestly one of the few bands where 'the same' is completely acceptable. They have enough variety in the songs they produce in their particular niche that pretty much only they really occupy, that 5 records of their brand of metal hasn't yet become anything approaching stale (Mission, Narrow Path, Nightbird's Song, and Enchanted By The Moon sound just as fresh as the best songs from Eclipse, of which there are many). I might wish for more variety or ambition from the likes of Amon Amarth, but Amorphis have a way to go before news of a record that isn't a complete departure from their recent sound doesn't prompt me to pre-emptively mentally prepare for them to be in my end of year top 5. One of the few bands I'm happy to foam at the mouth for like this and I hope they don't disappoint. September can't come soon enough!

Jens Bogren?? Seriously? They'd better compose some goods song for that one, so it would become one of their best efforts!

I never said they were bad albums as such, just that they haven't had any new ideas. In the 90's they did a U-turn every third album or so (Elegy to Tuonela, Far From the Sun to Eclipse), and around Skyforger/Beginning of Times it started to feel a bit flat listening to Eclipse/Silent Waters version 1.xx over and over again.

Great albums indeed but considering their 90's stuff, Skyforger should have been the last one in this series. Come on guys, I know you can do better. Hell, it doesn't even have to be better, just something different!

If this album blows me away, all will be forgiven. If not, I will shrug it off and enjoy it for what it is.

I think they are still innovative. They found their sound, which is totally unique, and they play with it. I wish there were more bands that sounded like this, but so long as Esa, Peka, and company keep churning out albums, I'll be happy.

If they didn't change their sound in "Circle" then they'd start to seriusly decline.. But this album was a step forward. It was like they tried to evolve again. Hope for a new revolution!
