Very eerie, painful, and Khanate-ish, this one is. Not quite to the level of that band, but the similarity is definitely strong enough to compare. MUCH better on album, by the way, seeing these guys live at Roadburn things kind of fell flat in front of a mass audience, but alone, in a setting of personal solitude, it's much more effective

My first impression is that it sounds like Khanate and another band (dont want to release a shitstorm again ) Ill give it some serious listening time next week.

Well you've made me super curious now , who's that "other band"?

Swans. It comes from this conversation. I'm not saying I don't agree with the influences being there. But to say "worship" is whole different thing. That's all.

Not as much repetition as Swans and less sludge than Khanate and a bit more cinematic than both. As a hardcore early Swans fan i immediately like what I am hearing. My main objective with this is that the songs could have been a bit longer and more drone, as it now its almost as drone-rock created in a radio format. Nevertheless if I crank it up its still probably better than 99% of the releases that will come this year. It will be interesting to see if its a grower. Probably a stong contender for drone(if its drony enough?) this year as its relative easy listening.

I'd definitely say this album is more drone than anything else, even if there is a slight bit of doom to it in the form of Dahlquist's bass playing. As far as drone releases this year go... personally, in my browsings, I've been finding that there have been a lot of "good" ones, but nothing that has really blown me away and that I'd give "fantastic" status just yet. That may change though, the better albums always seem to somehow come out in the second half of the year, at least for me

Best drone albums thus far though? Definitely this, the new Nadja, and probably Wolvserpent as well. I'd especially suggest checking out Wolvserpent if you haven't yet

Damn, what happened? Toil and Trouble sounded amazing, so had really high hopes for this, but the rest of the tracks are just a bunch of unfinished-sounding, amateurish ambient and pseudo-drone compositions. No sense of layering or poise whatsoever. I can see why this failed in a live set; most of the album is just someone jamming down on some keys on a keyboard and little else. At other times it sounds a bit like GTT but with 90% of the content removed. What a waste of Edgy 59.

Everything was better in the good old days? I tried BW a couple of times but I prefer this. It could have been layered a bit more but if you listen to BW that was never going to happen. Still in my top 10 this year.

Burning Witch had great, memorable songs and was heavy enough to not need to be layered though (it was a sludge album after all, not a drone one).

This isn't even in my top 10 for today
