Opeth - Sign To Nuclear Blast, Reveal New Album Details

The legendary Swedish progressive act Opeth are joining one of the biggest labels in the metal genre, Nuclear Blast Entertainment. We now also know that their successor to Pale Communion will be called Sorceress, and will be released at the end of the year. The group is currently in the studio with Tom Dalgety putting the finishing touches on the record. Good news then!

Mikael Åkerfeldt states: "We're happy to confirm that we have indeed signed a deal with Nuclear Blast Entertainment and will be putting out our 12th studio album Sorceress via our own imprint, Moderbolaget Records. The decision was made in Markus Staiger's (Nuclear Blast kingpin) ridiculously potent Porsche going at 150 mph somewhere in the south of Germany. We're happy to be part of the NB team and look forward to a fruitful relationship."

Nuclear Blast owner, Markus Staiger himself, is very eager to get Opeth on their team, and states: "I am honored that Opeth have joined the Nuclear Blast family. Mikael Åkerfeldt and his fellow bandmates have demonstrated time and time again that Opeth are a band that never release an album that sounds the same. You never know what their new music will sound like! Nuclear Blast has been following the musical journey of Opeth from the beginning with Orchid to landmark albums like Still Life, Deliverance, Damnation and Blackwater Park, right up to 2014's Pale Communion! The band have become one of the most challenging artists in rock music today. It is not often that we get to work with musicians of their caliber and I'm thrilled to have such a unique genre-leader on the label. The future for Opeth and Nuclear Blast looks very bright."

Are you pumped for this one?

Sorceress sounds like a stoner/doom-ish title. I'm interested in hearing the direction they go this time. Unlike a lot of "fans" I tend to like all of Opeth's releases.

For better or worse, they're not going back to sounding like (insert old album here.) That's not how Akerfeldt works, and it's worth keeping in mind that all the other original members are gone - and only Mendez has been around since MAYH.

I will always love the older stuff - Morningrise is probably my favorite, and it's been an awful long time since they were making that kind of music. But I enjoy the new stuff as well, and I'd rather encourage an artist to explore than demand a return to this or that previous style.

The Porche part reminded me of the "Metalstorm.ee selling out" April 1st article for some reason. Not that I'm implying anything, Opeth's been on a big label for quite some time.

They can do clean vocals all they want with no growls, and they can do an entire album of softer prog rock if they want... just make it dark and haunting like it used to be, PLEASE. As much as I think Heritage and Pale Communion are decent albums, stuff like Damnation was much better overall.

I mean, preferably they make it heavier than it has been, with or without growls. Best case scenario, they make a comeback and do another album in the old extreme metal style but with a huge twist so it's completely different--but I can only dream so much before I get way too deep into the realm of "never gonna happen".

It's highly likely to be another prog rock workout just as the two previous releases have been. I'll keep my fingers crossed that they turn up those guitar amps with some much added distortion & sprinkle it with some harsh vocals to the upcoming songs, even if its just in parts to give the tracks light & shade(I know keep on dreaming).

Nuclear Blast doesn't really seem fitting to Opeth after their last two albums. I sure hope Opeth would go back to doing what they do best, and with that they would fit in at NB.

Curious about this for sure. Who knows what this move can mean. But the title is cool.

Waiting with anticipation.

I thought Pale Communion, albeit a flawed album and not close to their 90s/00s work, was more a step towards the dark haunting sound that Opeth is supposed to have, so I much preferred it to Heritage, which was a prog rock album without that signature Opeth 'feel' that differentiates them from other bands. If they take another step in that direction I think I'd likely be very happy with the results.

I am....mildly anticipating this. I did like Heritage, but I couldn't really get into Pale Communion. I was very disappointed Akerfeldt said he didn't want to play metal anymore, but maybe he will have a change of heart and crank out something heavy again? I still have hope.

Of course I don't expect him to duplicate Deliverance or Blackwater Park again, but that doesn't have to be the case to deliver another good metal album.

I am really expecting this would be the progressive masterpiece. After being "experimented" with Heritage, leave their mark with "Pale Communion" and in this path to establish theirselves as a reference in prog rock. Really high expectatives with this one.

When it comes to Opeth nowdays, i always expect something... well... different, to say the least.

I enjoyed Pale Communion a lot more, than Heritage. We´ll see about this one.

I'm laying more hopes at the feet of the band signing with NB than on the album title and typical prerelease hype-parlance.

Not that Pale Communion was a shabby record by any stretch. Grown on me quite a bit.

Here it is, folks: Akerfeldt finally escapes the 70s prog chains, and progresses forward a decade -- into the 80s! Indeed, an Iron Maiden/Piece Of Mind - influenced Opethian affair is in order. Life is far too short for one of metal's very greatest bands to stay comatose forever in their 70s trip. Those who dislike metallic Opeth, prepare yourselves, for we shall see the return of the REAL OPETH...either with this or a future album... Breaking out of the little stoner room, and Screaming For Vengeance!
