The worst, so far.

Where does Slipknot fit in the world of metal in 2022? A band who have long solidified their place among the biggest bands in the genre as stadium fillers and radio regulars, they have endured internal struggles and creative dead ends in much of their latter-day career. As a result, it's been a while since listening to a new Slipknot album was done out of excitement and youthful abandon rather than apathetic obligation, half-knowing you'll get some catchy singles and middling filler, yet you can't help but give them another chance.

With rumours abounding that this album is the result of contractual obligation, the omens didn't bode well and, well, they were right. The End, So Far does little to change this reputation and attitudes towards the album, rather than challenging for the spot as their best album, it's fighting to avoid being the worst record they have put out. Much of the album is rife with incomplete ideas or mediocre material; though some dimly lit bright spots shine through, they are overshadowed by the band's prior output and scant consolation for the effort of digging for diamonds in the dirt.

While not exactly setting the world ablaze, the bright spots do evoke a positive response, though they won't immediately become earworms like their prior classics. "The Dying Song (Time To Sing)" is cut from the cloth as the band's prior singles, though it seems more threadbare than prior radio hits. "Hive Mind" and "Heirloom" are two tracks that seem built for the stage; hopefully they become the two tracks the band keep in setlists going forward. "De Sade" is a warping and winding song that seems to stitch disparate pieces together well to make a strong whole.

While creatively the band seem to phone it in, in terms of performance and production The End, So Far is as strong as the rest of their discography. The band sounds as powerful as ever, continuing to walk the tightrope that is balancing nine musicians in the mix; it might sound like a carbon copy of their previous productions, but if it ain't broke eh?

If this sounds like little consolation then yes, you would be right. No matter how competently played and produced a bad song is, you can't polish a turd and turn it into gold; a bad song is still a bad song at the end of the day. The End, So Far is mostly split into three camps, tracks that feature a good idea, but are poorly utilized ("Adderall", "Warranty"), songs that just seem to meander from start to finish ("Yen", "Medicine For The Dead") and mediocre tracks ("The Chapeltown Rag"). The result is an album that seems rushed out or with minimal effort put into it (lending credence to the rumours of contractual obligations), leaving listeners with little in the way of replay value beyond trying to salvage what they can.

There is enough material here that sounds like it could have been much better had the band been given more time to work on it, but unfortunately that still renders The End, So Far as an album of unfulfilled potential rather than potential reailzed.

Slipknot continue their mid-career crisis with The End, So Far, a record that should hopefully serve as a wake-up call for the group; change direction now and maintain forward momentum or fall into the trap of many older bands, that being to solely live on your former glories while fans tolerate your new material.

Giving this album 5.8 is just prejudice. No matter if you like it or not in comparison with the older stuff, 5.8 is just prejudice. Of course, everybody has his opinion, and blah blah. This album has good songs (no matter how good they could possibly be or how good in comparison with the old repertoire) such as The dying song, hivemind, yen, medicine for the dead, de sade, H377, and finale. Every song is well crafted in a different way. Rating an album with 5.8 means it is close to being unlistenable in every aspect, that has already surpassed the boundaries of personal taste and it is clearly in the area of objective technical, productional, or whatever failures. Considering someone that this album is unlistenable then the problem obviously is not on the album but on the listener. I have all the luxury to say that I don't like something but I understand that is well structured and performed or I don't like something because I think it is crap in every aspect with undisputed problems, such as bad production bad execution and etc. The first scenario is light years away from the second on how I judge an album in each case. So maybe it is time to start separating the first and the second scenario.

Giving this album 5.8 is just empathy. No matter if you like it or not in comparison with the older stuff, 5.8 is just empathy.

Just to avoid misunderstandings, "empathy" in English doesn't have the same meaning as in the Greek language, even though it's a word that comes from Greek. In English, it means "ενσυναίσθηση". I know that what you mean to say is "prejudice" or "bias", but I am just making this clear for the non-Greeks who would be puzzled at the use of "empathy" in your comment.

I haven't listened to the album, but I disagree with what you say, simply because 5.8 means "just below average". And "just below average" in no way means "close to being unlistenable in every aspect". I don't know how you came to that conclusion.

As someone who has scored an album with a 5.8, I can concur that it doesn't mean that an album is unlistenable, or even that it's actively unpleasant to listen to, merely that it's not particularly enjoyable or interesting, for whatever reason is specified in the review. And having listened to this record, I think 5.8 is an extremely reasonable score to give it, regardless of any prior bias towards or against Slipknot that the reviewer may have had; it's just not a particularly good album, by the band's or others' standards

Thank you for clarification. Was about to lambast this guy for his vocab, but I always end up forgetting there’s other countries outside of America.

Only listened to it once but I was pretty disappointed. Let me put this clearly, I am not a great Slipknot fan but I enjoy every twice album (Vol 3, the Gray Chapter and We are Not Your Kind for instance). I like their mixed up bag of songs, sometimes slow, sometimes fast... but here I can seldom enjoy anything and seemingly I'm not the only one. Too bad.

If anyone has a score that's close to unlistenable it's me. Because I'm am not a fan of them and I mostly found it boring. Even more so then the last album 50 ratings means there's still some stuff that is liked about it but to the listener it isn't that great. 70 rating's is you like some of the tracks but it isn't their best work but it isn't that bad. 70 to 75 is like a C to C+ rating 50 and 60 are like a D or D minus rating while lower is closer to an F. 80's is like a B to B + and and 85 to 89 to 90 is like a A to A +

Thanks for the suggestion my friend about empathy, you are absolutely correct.

Slipknot hasnt put out a good album since 2001 Iowa.
Going mainstream killed their sound.

It's hard coming to the album un-biased since we've been reading for month in various metal media that this album was going THE shit, and then reading interview from band members expressing their lack of time and/or involvement in the material...

So I am gonna stick with what Mike Portnoy said about Slipknot's last album .........

I have no idea what @slipknot purists are saying…but for me, this is one of the albums of the year!

Songs like Adderall, Yen, Medicine & Acidic show the band tapping into completely new territories…like Slipknot meets Pink Floyd & Radiohead…and I fuxking LUV IT!! 👏🤘

But it’s also completely brutal at times too…Crazy insane shit…(Btw the fucking MVP performance on the album is @vmanshreds’s bass playing on Adderall 🙌)

For the old school maggots…no, this isn’t Joey & Paul’s Slipknot anymore…but this is a whole new level of Slipknot…creatively firing on all cylinders…and delivering their Sgt Pepper

I'm quite surprised at how most comments seem to be in agreement that this is a poor to mediocre album. For one, none of their albums have been as dull as "All Hope is Gone", and for two, I just don't share the feeling that this is rushed and incomplete, it feels like a solid and well above average release to me, full of solid riffs, interesting and energetic vocal work, and some interesting ideas thrown in here and there.
I would probably put it alongside Machine Head's recent release - it's fun, engaging, and I can see myself re-listening to it regularly. I wonder if anyone else would agree with the comparison but come to the opposite conclusion...
As ever I have to compliment the high-quality review writing though, and I appreciate the use of 4-6 ratings as "meh" rather than "absolute unlistenable trash".

A 5.8 means its a mediocre album but not offensively bad. A 6 would have meant a decent but meh album, 7 it has its moments, 8 is good but has flaws, 9 is great, 10 and its just about as perfect as it gets.
