In Extremo - Paris, 11.03.07 by Jeff (14) |
The first time that I saw In Extremo, it was at Graspop 2004. Back in time, I didn't even know this band to be honest, well only by name actually but I was curious to see a band which was apparently great during their live performances. It was right, the show was amazing and then I decided the other day to go to their show in Paris.
Jenx was the first band of the evening. This French combo from Bordeaux played a nice Indus Metal with big Death vocals and catchy but basic riffs (it was Indus remember) and we got a good show at the end. But the band had a really big problem, the public wasn't here for them, definitely, and even if they gave all their power to play their songs, the reaction of the audience was cold like ice. It was a bit sad but it was also a bit logic, because the audience was there to see some festive music, and it wasn't the case of Jenx. It was a good first part not so amazing maybe, but unfortunately not really understood by the French Metalheads.
After this quick start, In Extremo finally came on stage and let me tell you that we had an amazing show! The concert started with the first verse and chorus of "Spielman" a capela before that the full line up of the band came on stage to play the song in its original Metal form. It was impressive because you had all those mediaeval instruments (bagpipes, harps, mandolins, hurdy-gurdy etc) which gave an incredible power and deepness to the music and when they started to play, it was like a real musical wave, it was impressive.
But it was also super festive and plus, the band played all their hits, old like new ones, ("Ave Maria", "Wind", "Liam" etc). Everybody in the venue was singing (well "trying to sings" is probably better) the lyrics in German but they was above everything else jumping and dancing during the whole set. Only a few bands have the ability to give a show which gives this kind of ambiance, and In Extremo did it. The guys were extremely friendly, joking a lot of time between them and with the crowd but they were all really charismatic too and I don't even have to talk about all their "magical" instruments which was not only some great addition to the music but which was also really beautiful.
I jumped everywhere too, the setlist was perfect and the ambiance in the Elysée Montmarte near to be incredible. Only the fireworks and flames were missing (the stage of the venue is not so big), and it was a bit sad because that's something important in the mise en scene of the shows of the German act. But all in all, I have nothing to say against the show, the sound was perfect, the performance of the musicians excellent, the setlist complete the audience really good? well, In Extremo live this night, it was something great.
Of course, you have to like Folk Metal and music a la Rammstein, but if you like those music you cannot dislike In Extremo. Also, I really recommend you to try to go one of their shows because it's super refreshing original, fun and mega festive. One more time, In Extremo played a great concert which was all but not boring and I can tell you that I will not miss anymore date of the combo when they will be back in France. Just amazing!
Many thx one more time to Roger and Base for the accreditation.
