If you're a fan of Exhorder, Sadus, Kreator, and Dark Angel with a touch of death metal, then Overthrow is right up your alley. This Canadian thrash metal powerhouse stood alongside legends like Razor, Exciter, Voivod, etc, exuberating the immense talent during their brief existence. Despite their sheer potential, Overthrow remained largely obscure, never receiving the recognition they truly ever deserved.
Overthrow stands as one of the one-album wonders of the thrash scene, delivering in 1990 their opus, Within Suffering—a vicious, semi-technical thrash/death hybrid, clocking in at just over half an hour, securing its place among the most impressive late-'80s/early-'90s records. The album offers a distinctive taste with fierce, blistering headbangers like “Infection” and “Chemically Exposed” alongside more complex, longer tracks such as “Repressed Hostility” and “Suppression,” where intricate tempo shifts are explored with panache. The band navigates these sophisticated rhythms with remarkable skill, the bass cutting through the razor-sharp guitar work while the intense, death-tinged vocals tear through each track with unrelenting force. Even amidst the more varied compositions, the relentless high-speed energy never wanes, as tracks like “All That Remains” and “Abduction of Life” expertly blend both approaches within their concise runtime.
While I'd love to place Within Suffering alongside Gammacide's Victims Of Science and Incubus (USA-LA)’s Beyond The Unknown, Overthrow thrashes at such a god-tier level that they sounds like they are bordering on blastbeats. The only downside here is that this phenomenal release was destined to remain underground, despite its greatness. This was worth a shot to be similar to early Dark Angel or Kreator; it would have undoubtedly captured the attention of thrash, speed, and punk metal fans alike.
Highlights: “Infection”, “Chemically Exposed,” and "All That Remains"
