Some bands are just waiting for the right exposure in order to blossom; this is one of them. The alternative progressive rock outfit known as Shaking Judy from Pierrefonds, Quebec (Montreal region) hit the scene a few years ago. With their first EP - "Songs for Apollo" - they have already made a name for themselves in Quebec and are ready to step up to a higher level of recognition, which they deserve.
Within the span of five songs only, this band is able to prove that it has a future. The variety showcased on "Songs for Apollo" is great, with clean-cut songwriting and a first-rate sense for melody. The strength of Shaking Judy is to take you on a ride with them, whether the atmosphere is relaxed, contemplative, or aggressive.
Each song has its own atmosphere, from the ultra-catchy 'Change of Heart' to the progressive 'Cave In.' 'Ocean Song' has a beachy, swingy feel, and you may find yourself humming 'On The Run' days after you heard it first. All throughout the album, the vocal work stands out as do the carefully penned lyrics.
While the production may not be able to compete with a monster studio, their sound is pretty polished and it carries the songs along pleasantly. Kudos to the Apollo Sound studios for their fine work on this.
Put simply, judging by Shaking Judy's first EP, the potential of albums to come is already a given. I, for one, am looking forward to hearing more from this band. Meanwhile, I'll go back to enjoying this EP and encourage you to check out their website.
