Yes, a death metal band with a double bass player, that is right. I was also surprised when I saw them for the first time. This band makes pure death metal: heavy guitar riffs, raucous grunts, fast drums and some nice guitar solos.
Do not let the name of the band mislead you, they are not brutal and satanic, but they are drenched with their own ideas and convictions, which show out well in the lyrics. I will not tell you about their history and all, because even I am not really interested in that. Let's go to the sound of the demo.
First of all the quality is not bad at all, which I expected because it's only a demo album. The drums sound a bit flat, but much better than on other demo's I heard. Also the guitars are good in proportion to each other. Altogether it's pretty well mixed and recorded.
The double bass is not very marked. Only the very last seconds of the demo makes you aware of the sound. On all the songs, the guitar is the leading instrument, you constantly hear guitar riffs and more riffs. That is probably because Giedo, the lead guitarist, makes the music. Sometimes you wonder when the guitars will drop and the double bass makes a solo, but it does not happen, pity.
The variety is my only thing to comment upon. If you like riffs or if you play guitar yourself, it may of course be very interesting to listen to. There are some very nice runs, but I often miss the change of sound.
The vocals are nicely accented. Some lines are catchy and stick to your mind. Especially on "I Am the Law" (the title may make you think of Anthrax, but is has nothing to do with it), the vocals are in front of the whole, which is very catching.
I can indeed say this is a very good piece of death metal. Although some things could have been done better, well, that is of course the case with most demo albums. I like this band and this demo, even though I listen more to symphonic-kinds of metal. If you can get your hands on this demo, you should!
