F.A.F.O. 2023

Thumbs up: +1
An ongoing saga charting band's who, for better or worse, I have discovered every month of the year. While I won't list every band, I will be selecting highlights and/or lowlights.

1. January
2.
3. The Drowning - This Bleak Descent
Discovered: Spotify. Trawling through recommended artists can have interesting results, some for the better and some for the worse. Luckily for me, This Bleak Descentfalls into the former category. Their heavy doom approach hits hard without sacrificing atmosphere and combines both elements well.
4.
5. Riverside - Discovered:Tour Dates. Prog is rarely my thing, but after seeing their name on the Prognosis poster I decided to give them a go and I found myself listening to Wasteland among other cuts in their discography. While I doubt I will be able to attend, I've managed to make myself feel like I'm missing out.
6.
7. Dargaard - In Nomine Aeternitatis
Discovered:Recommended.Reminds me old PlayStation One era survival horror OST'S. It scratches that itch between nostalgia and evoking memories of being unsettled playing old school games late at night in the dark. For that reason the music resonated with me on am emotional level.
8.
9. Cyclone Temple - My Friend Lonely
Discovered: Spotify. Sometimes shifting through Spotify can be a chore, but it's worth it when you unearth a band like this. Mixing thrash with early 90's groove for maximum impact, tracks like "Down The Drain" were on regular rotation.
10.
11. Ildjarn - Discovered: Spotify. Well, first lowlight of the year for me. While the ambient stuff is, at best, boring; the lo-fi black metal material was grating rather than stimulating. Not my cup of tea at all.
12.
13. Skin Tension - Discovered: Recommendation. They are...certainly something. Quite what will be debated by philosophers and metalheads for years to come.
14.
15. Grave Pleasures - Discovered: Spotify. A hypnotic mix of psychedelica and indie that makes for some compelling listening.
16.
17. February
18.
19. Shadow Gallery - Tyranny
discovered: book. Prog metal in the Dream Theater vein, highly skilled and unafraid to adventure sonically. Its this ability to sound like they're following the music, rather than just flexing their musicial ability is what seperates them from their peers.
20.
21. Dozer - Through The Eyes Of Heathens
discovered: tour dates. Heavy stoner with a good empathsis on groove.
22.
23. Dead Letter Circus - Discovered: Spotify. Mistook them for Deadly Circus Fire but damn, DLC is the far superior band. Fast becoming one of my favourite prog rock bands.
24.
25. March
26.
27. Saturnus - Veronica Decides To Die
Discovered: Tour Dates. An absolute gem of an album that has been stuck on rotation, perfect mix of atmosphere and power
28.
29. Swallow The Sun - Discovered: Tour Dates. Finally clicked with me despite years of trying, their ability to weave atmosphere into their sound really adds to their charm.
30.
31. Joey Valence & Brae - Discovered: Download Festival. If you miss Beastie Boys then these guys scratch that itch well. While not the most original, it helps fill a void and they have good flow and energy.
32.
33. $uicideboy$ - Discovered: hype. Seem to be all the rage at the moment, not bad as hip hop but don't see how they relate to metal as people hype up.
34.
35. Bongzilla - Discovered: Tour Dates. Instantly addictive, heavy drone stoner doom. Been on regular rotation since I stumbled upon them. So far my favourite discovery of the year so far.
36.
37. Waking The Cadaver - Discovered: recommendation. Yeah, won't be taking advice from that person again
38.
39. Into Eternity - The Incurable Tragedy
Discovered: SpotifyMore than "the band Stu Block used to sing for", solid mix of thrashy prog power metal.
40.
41. Kalmah - discovered: tour dates.Power death metal is a thing apparently, pushing a boundary in the death metal sound that I never really paid too much attention to before. Their new album coming out later in the year is highly anticipated.
42.
43. Pogo Car Crash Control - discovered: Spotify. Quite an eclectic band with a good solid bit of power to proceedings. Not a clue what they're singing about though
44.
45. Memphis May Fire - discovered: Spotify.Already knew of them, but listened to Remade In Misery and took me back to mid 00's metalcore, nice nostalgic trip.
46.
47. April(turns out their is a Finnish band named April as well, pretty bog standard metalcore)
48.
49. Huntress - Discovered: Spotify. Only recently gave them a chance after knowing their name for years, enjoyable heavy metal with a harder twist; female led heavy metal has seemingly led itself into a creative cul-de-sac, but Huntress sound like they were looking for a new path. R.I.P. Jill Janus.
50.
51. Blood Red Throne - Discovered: Tour Dates. Another case of knew the name, but not the band. Solid OSDM that leans into brutal death metal slightly. While they're enjoyable, their albums aren't as consistent as you'd hope.
