218. Nonexister - Demons
[7.0] - Above-average enjoyment of this alt rock.
219. The Moor - Ombra
[7.0] - Quite nice accessible prog that feels like a midpoint between Evergrey and modern Katatonia, but with some growls in there too.
220. Caeli Concept - Lunaison
[7.0] - Djenty stuff, mixture of straight Meshuggah worship and some oddball parts, with saxophone or clean vocals, some of it works pretty cool, some of it not so well.

[7.0] - Cool hard rock with good lead vocalist and nice guitarwork.

253. Wormwitch - Wormwitch / Sadistic Ritual
[7.0] - Fine black metal split, some cool hooks/melodies on Wormwitch side, not as keen on the thrashy Sadistic Ritual.

[7.0] - Curious pivot from world music-infused funeral doom to world music-infused drone; works fairly well.

[7.0] - Quite tasty symph-meloblack with dual harsh/operatic vocals.
272. Venomous Echoes - Split Formations And Infinite Mania

[6.5] - Slightly cheesy melodeath/metalcore sound.
378. Engulf - The Dying Planet Weeps

380. Aura Ignis - Marcando Tu Destino
[6.5] - Alright Spanish power metal, decent vocalist.

[6.0]

Damn, I lost at being the first like.

Probably gonna wait a couple more weeks until I start trying to keep up with new music. Currently enjoying not having a listening schedule other than wrapping up the 2023 stuff.

Thankfully the beginning of this year seems pretty dead thus far, I also appreciate the chance to respin some albums I enjoyed last year that I've not had the chance to go back to yet

Hey man, great job as always! But tell me one thing, what does "macho BS riffs" mean in the Caligula's Horse description? Thanks.

Cheers mate! To be honest, I'm not sure if 'macho BS' is entirely the thing I mean for Caligula's Horse. 'Macho BS' for me is, I don't know how best to describe it, ungratifying heaviness that feels like posturing but doesn't have anything in it that's satisfying; I got it a lot with more alt-metal or hardcore/metalcore bands, there's a few hyped bands that pop up on tours or festivals in the UK, I go see their sets and there's a lot of macho posturing with these slow-mid pounding songs, but the riffs just don't hook me so it all comes off as shallow.

In truth, it's not really applicable to Caligula's Horse; I have a separate issue with melodic prog metal bands, typically ones that are more classic-sounding, who will have heavy bits that have a lot of low end and make a lot of noise, but just don't sound interesting to me - the song Prosthetic by Haken is a big example to me of heavy riffing that has nothing going for it beyond distortion, the riffs are loud, but they're toothless and dull (Dream Theater have a few riffs in that vein in their post-2000 work). Caligula's Horse are nowhere at that level, but I do find some of their shorter, heavier stuff also doesn't do much for me - I saw them at ArcTanGent last summer and songs like Rust and Slow Violence close to one another in the set both kinda felt like the band getting less interesting when producing dry heavy riffing that doesn't grab my interest beyond the fact that it's loud, and I guess that's something that I don't really encounter on the new album; they're a band that are best when they're more melodic or grandiose. That kind of dry heavy prog-riffing isn't really macho BS (that's more -core stuff really), but I find it similarly tedious in that it's heaviness with attitude but lacking substance, and I end up using that term when I'm talking about the prog sounds (tbf, I don't use it in reviews and I didn't expect people to pay close enough attention to my list wording to pick up on, so I never felt the need to come up with 2 separate terms for myself for slightly different sounds that produce a common sense of underwhelment in me).

I don't think I've described it particularly well, but yeah, basically 'macho BS' is my shorthand for loud, angry, dry, posturing riffing/breakdowns that bring a lot of noise but nothing that I can get attached to, and while it's not really applicable, it's also my lazy shorthand for classic prog metal bands doing dry heavy riffs that bore me.

I'll never get to see the explanation behind 'macho BS' like mus did. I thought it was macho bullshit.
