One year after their successful debut album "Mystic Places of Dawn", Chris Antoniou, guitarist and one of the former members of Septic Flesh leaves for now the band in order to continue his guitar and orchestration studies at UK. Spiros and Sotiris remain back to continue the vision of Septic Flesh and in 1995 they release their second attempt, "Esoptron". For one more time the production was made by Septic Flesh and Necromantia's Magus Wampyr Daoloth, a good production but definitely not the best for such a wonderful release. In this album all the music and lyrics were written by Sotiris and it seems that he's pouring his soul into this release exposing his very own esoptron. According to the music, Septic Flesh, when time comes to relate "Esoptron" with their debut album, lower the speed of their compositions, but without losing in aggression, and at the same time the dark and mystic atmosphere becomes more descriptive evoking pictures of our inner self along with the esoteric lyrics. This time the influences from the ancient Greek culture are way more obvious and more intense than the ones in "Mystic Places of Dawn" and they add a unique mystic and ethereal feeling to the whole atmosphere. Brilliant album! While "Mystic Places of Dawn" was still mostly a death metal album, "Esoptron" is much richer in its expressions.

I would say that this album is underrated. Their early work was as good as the following albums. Metal fans should check this album out, too.

While I kinda like their symphonic stuff, I feel they totally lost all the subtlety and genuineness that made them unique back in the 90s. They sure knew how to write intriguing songs and conjure up really dark, gloomy yet serene vibes. The latest albums are still funny to listen to, but overall after Communion they became too turgid and repetitive for my tastes.

The songwriting reached new highs compared to their previous works but I think the productions on the drums could have been a little bit better. The cymbals are a bit overpowering at times while also having a thin sound so it can be a bit distracting. I'm actually just nitpicking here because this truly is high quality 90s extreme metal. The work on the keyboards is much better here and the leads are so dreamy. I guess I just enjoy the metal of their debut just a bit more. Same with the vocals. This album has more depth behind it though. Will require more listenings.
