The last five years have been testing ones for Sonata Arctica having run the wave of hype and enthusiasm raised by the first couple of albums dry. Critics have had a blast with the band in recent years, with none more victimised than the band's last output Unia. A couple of years ago Sonata Arctica looked like a shadow of its former self, but right now with the release of album number six, The Days Of Grays has shone a ray of light.

The Days of Grays is an album that was eagerly anticipated by the public, mostly due to the fact that some reviewers, who got to listen to it beforehand, labeled it as an album halfway between Unia and Reckoning Night. But I'd disagree with that-it's between the two albums only in terms of complexity. Musically, it's again a whole new Sonata Arctica. Don't worry though, the elements that make the very soul of the band are still more or less present and I shall discuss them below.

I kinda changed my mind on this one here... it lives up to Unia and it offers an interesting shift in direction, that I still believe in, but yet it falls some half of point short behind their best albums.

I forgot to comment on this album. I personally think this is modern Sonata's best release to date. Even though it still has the weird Queen-like sound in some songs (honestly, I can't stand that weirdness), it has its moments, like Deathaura, the longest and most epic track in the album; definitely one of my favorites. I also think this album would be better if it was pure Power Metal. Prog Metal is not their thing.

Another thing I'd like to point out is that the bonus tracks are really worth listening. In My Eyes You're A Giant and Nothing More are so full of energy.

This album is highly underrated, IMO. It is one of my all time favorites. Love everything about it. The symphonic approach is what really makes it so great, though. Fuck, I wish they would've kept that in SGHN.
