Of all Gamma Ray's albums, their first three have always had that Helloween feel to them. As band leader Kai Hansen had written a fair bit for Helloween, this shouldn't quite come off as a surprise. But of each of Gamma Ray's first three albums the Helloween influence is most noticeable here, on Insanity And Genius.

This is the only GR album I've heard before they had a really successful career period with Land of the Free, etc. As it is, this is still a pretty solid, powerful metal album with a couple of woefully cheesy anthems ("Gamma Ray" and the title track to be specific), but generally I found it an enjoyable record to listen to on a lazy Sunday. I would say the first half of the album (songs 1-5) is stronger in terms of songwriting and instrumental performance, but the album closer is pretty good stuff too.

More hard rock than heavy/power metal. The nods to Queen on "Heal Me" were a little jarring. Must admit I'm glad Ralf left.

Too many fillers on this one IMO, it's still decent for a few songs, but most of this album is skippable.

Better as previous, but somehow it sounds like comedy metal from space to me

Comedy yes, pseudo-funny songs that actually are weak. Songs #1 and #3 are what I can call different than the others and good songs, which isn't enough to make this album worthy.

That's a good way to describe it. I cant really tell why, but I have always enjoyed early GR quite a lot (until LOTF). You know, I grew up with this shit. Back at the time Germany was plagued with this stuff. I have probably been hypnotized.

This is the second best Ralph era gamma ray album. This album is not cheesy like some say, it's just playful which makes it so refreshing compared to most metal out there.

The last album for Scheepers as a vocalist in Gamma Ray and a bit weaker one than previous. Ralf's overall run wasn't bad by any means, it's just that the band is destined for so much greater things in a near future! But still, a bunch of nice tunes can be found here, such as: "Last Before The Storm", "Tribute To The Past", "Heal Me" and "No Return". 7.5/10
